Here's a poem about English I first saw decades ago, perhaps one of you knows the author?
I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough.
Others may stumble, but not you,
On hiccough, thorough, laugh and through.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps.
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird.
And dead – it’s said like bed, not bead.
For goodness sake, don’t call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat.
They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.
A moth is not a moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, broth in brother,
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for pear and bear.
And then there’s dose and rose and loose -
Just look them up – and goose and choose.
And cork and work and card and ward.
And font and front and word and sword.
And do and go, then thwart and cart.
Come, come, I’ve hardly made a start.
A dreadful language? Man alive.
I’d mastered it when I was five!

Lovely. We non-native speakers learn written English first, so these kinds of words are pointed out to us first. :D But nice poem indeed...:goteam:

Now a little show and comparison.

Here's a woman, that started it all. She's an actress and various accents are here... hobby:
YouTube - 21 Accents (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UgpfSp2t6k)

Then many followed, but of all, this one's the most interesing:
YouTube - 10 Different Accents (or less. Amy Walker tribute) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0reWzX0IYws)

And here are some accents (those Puerto Rican accents were AMAZING!) in Spanish language:
YouTube - 21 Acentos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLyaXkzAfTE)

And now for my personal favorite, 21 Russian accents (I wonder if you guess the godfather one and also the one I love so much!):

Da! :2200:

"Amy Walker" was excellent, though she needs work on her Texas and South Carolina accents. She did many of them convincingly, the California was very well done.

Carlos Santos esta muy bien con muchos de los acentos!

Thank you JackDaw!!! :2239:

Carlos Santos was perfect. I can imagine such a guy being my friend. He seemed very funny and interesting, definitely a source of many people's funny memories.

How about that Russian vid, Caloosa?

Good morning!

I had only listened to the Russian accent video once, (now twice), since my ability to understand Russian is not good. It has been 25 years since I have spoken that language. More recently, a few years ago when a friend was teaching me Slovacian she told me I speak Slovacian like a Russian.

I could hear the differences in the accents but many of the niuances were lost on me. I am certainly not the best person (or anywhere near it) to get a good opinion on that accents video. I did enjoy it.

Thank you again JackDaw, and Thank you Ante for the comments. :2239:

It's the Japanese "Don't Laugh" show. Basically, a group of comedians become high school students for a day & whatever funny encounters they experience, they must not laugh or they get caned. The entire show was on youtube before & it was SO HILARIOUS! Unfortunately, it's been taken off.

Yes there are definiately better ways of learning another language!

I prefer the "immersion" method. When you are forced (not physically) to listen and speak, as in going to a store and buying things where your primary language is not spoken, to be very effective.

When I was at a previous University, I had some friends from Saudia Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Egypt, that taught me much more Arabic than I could ever learn in classroom. They also taught me things I would never learn in classroom! We had many good laughs!

There's no need for learning Arabic here, 'cause there aren't many Arabic speaking people here. Neither do we have connections with Middle East or Arabia, so it was kinda out of the question for me.
But I could never understand, how is it possible for them to write with atrament, when they go over the text with their hand (when they are right-handed).

Some of my friends are Arabic though. Funny language. :bananas_b

Arabic is the Toughest language I've ever used. Some of the sounds are very gutteral and from the back of the throat.

Learning to read it was very challanging, well for me anyway. Now I am very much out of practice. If you don't use it, you loose it.

Ma ha Salaam. :2239:
