Hey Guys!

Has any one tried to grow ginger from grocery store ginger root? Any suggestions how to get it too root, I was thinking of trying putting it in a little water until the roots sprout then planting it. but Im looking for other suggestions.

You should have no problem sprouting it. Depending on which type of market you purchase from the majority of the time it's going to be Zingiber officinale.

It's easy to do, but I don't know what you mean by putting it in water until roots sprout. The piece you buy, in the store, IS the root. We just throw them in a pot, with some potting mix. We're in zone 7; maybe in 9, you can do it in the ground. I don't know what the flower looks like, but the plant is nothing special; just plain green, medium sized leaves. There are lots of gingers that are much prettier.

Just plant it about an inch or inch and half in the soil and within 3 to 4 weeks you will probably have plants shooting up.

Just plant them in a pot or the ground. I grew them for like 2 or 3 years and didn't get any spectacular results (especially since I left them outdoors in the winter and I guess that sets them back a lot). It was like having a little green canna that doesn't even flower.

I dont mind that if its just green I consider it a starter plant. I can get some stuff for next spring.
