Hello folks,

I'm going to the Dominican Republic soon and I will try to collect some local musa species there. I hope to get some nice ones.

I would love to have the local ' rulo ' ( very tasty ) and the classic platano type.
Any more advise on 'must have' types that i could encounter there?

thank you very much ! :waving:

Rosados, aka Cuban or Jamaican Reds, would be on my wishlist as well, if I were you. I'd also look out for the Nino or Orito type tiny-fruit bananas.

Sounds like fun. I haven't left state side since 1990. Perhaps one day in near future I will head back to South America for some fun.

Have fun.

Sadly - he will be just about as far away from me as it is possible to get on this big island (6.5 hrs drive in each direction) , but I have given him some pointers and as his wife is Dominicana he should be able to get what he wants. Guineo rojo and rulo pequeno should set him on the right path - other names will be useless unfortunately.

Hey Palmpje - don't eat rulo as vegetables - get them ripe to the softness stage and eat them fresh - the best eating banana ever but the Dominicans don't do that! enjoy your stay!

I already found a local platano, rulo and guineo specie, i will take the corm of this with me,
I already collected queen palm seeds and other palm seeds
Banana species with seeds i dont find here because these species are used for consumation
I tried already rulo like you said in its ripe form and its truly amazing, its a great experience and you find it in your own backyard
if somebody is interested i will propagate them at home to redistribute them later

Hello friends ! I'm back from the island! I didn't got any fancy banana types but at least i collected bulbs from:

2 different platano types
1 rulo type
1 guineo type

Unfortunatly I couldn't carry more bulbs with me because of weight. Lets hope that every bulb will now grow. If not, that would be too bad. :waving:

I put them in the ground with some fertilizer. Till now i didn't noticed any growth yet ! ( 4 days in the ground ). I'm already starting to worry a bit,

With your help and the help of the internet, maybe I can discover the scientific names of these tastefull beauty's.

Rulo is really really a good tasty banana ! it's good cooked and when you eat it mature. It's a short thick banana. I can really recommend this one !:0517:

Hi palmpje, welcome back (sorry, still don't know your name).
So, first things first...
We definitely hope to see some pics from your vacation soon, you don't have to be on them, if you don't want to, but remember, that you went to tropical paradise and not many of us will get there. ;) So we are curious... :ha:

Anyway, if Rulo is at least as good as you describe, that will be some feast. :D It seems to be some plantain (AAB), because it tastes well both cooked and raw, but it's not 100% as everything with bananas.

You did both good and bad thing putting them into the soil. It's good because the soil is warm already, but bad, because you will have to transplant soon.
Give it some time, it will hopefully regrow nicely.
I hope to see some pics around soon. ;)
Good luck!

(ideas) Take lots of pictures to post. Get a shopping list for what to look for. Take notes and make contacts. If going to the DR for a vacation, just have fun and forget the ideas. Enjoy your trip. :0519: :bananas_b :bed: GOOD LUCK.

Kim,

Actually almost all the family of my wife resides there. So it will be not the last time that I will go there. It will at least take another year tough, so i hope to have some nice results.

Jack, You can call me palmpje. Thanks for the nice reply ! I'm happy to share my name in private messages, but i don't like it to be on the internet. My name is quiet unique, and i don't like my life to be an open book for every google crazy privacy invader. Hope you understand me :ha:

I already posted a little picture in the gallery of 2 corms that i planted, but that doesn't say very much. I will soon take the time to post pictures and share my holiday experience with you guys.

I have a contact with a banana farmer back there, he could tell me more about rulo and the rest ( real names etc ) So let's cross our fingers.

I will be happy to share corms with all European members if I can propagate them. Everybody that haves interest in that can contact me in private.

1Dalmatiansoap (all ?)
2Jack Daw ( rulo ? )

Ofcourse succes isn't guaranteed, because they are still sitting in the garden, not doing very much. Except one of the plantains started to grow a bit ( i noticed that today)

When it get too cold ( oktober ~ november ) I will bring them all inside. Don't want too lose any precious corm. However i will have to deal with my wife killing me for that :0517:. You see, my wife isn't a plant-loving-person.

Hi,

I just came back from Dominican Republic (7 days - air, hotel, all your can eat and drink $499). So many beautiful places to see. When in DR I collected many fancy hibiscus cuttings to take home that are now doing well here in West Virginia. My suggestion is bring back banana seedlings and hibiscus. Enjoy!

Here, the rulo is known as "mafafo" or in less delicate circles as "rompe culo"..they eat like a banana but taste like a platano to me...

Hello friends,

i haven't been on the forum for a while due to some medical problems.

however, i have a question for you guys. Can anybody tell me what i should do,

there is still almost no growth in my musas i brought home. i've extracted them from the soil and i noticed almost no root development.

i did put them in pots now, and brought them inside the house. the themperature inside is 20 degrees, and they are close to a window, thus having much light. outside temps are droping around 14 - 19° C. in the night i think it even cools down more.

i did this because i was thinking that a constant temperature will be better for the growth.

alsow i made the soil moist with water and a fertile solution ( cow fertilizer ).

i hope to finaly see some growth now, would be a pity to move everything to the recycle bin.

Good thing you took them inside, although the transplant didn't surely do any good.
THe first problem I encountered with my plants was the wake up time, which I think was due to the cold soil we had hereearly in the season.
The second very important thing to know is, that bananas will start growing, when the soil reaches certain higher temperatures, as if it was several hot days in a row and thesoils warms up.
The third thing to remember is that corms with undeveloped roots don't process water, thus it makes them vulnerable to watering. The mroe you irrigate or water, the worse it will be. Your soil should always be slightly moist, but never wet.

And then there's final advice - wait and wait and wait. Nothing to do there. It will wake up when it wakes up.

Today I couldn't control my fingers to start moving some soil around in the little containers. The sight of some big white roots brought a smile on my face !!!

these little fellows are not doing much above the earth, but it seems that they are slowly organizing something beneath the soil level.

Thanks for the good advice my friends ! patience is a nice thing.

Palmpje - the rulo will be an orinoco - either the dwarf form if you are lucky, or the standard form which has a pstem of 20ft - as big as ice creams and saba. Glad your plants are starting to grow and love to see your pics when you feel well enough to post them!
