View Full Version : Choking Plant?

Hey guys, I have noticed recently that my Gran Nain seems to be putting out leaves at an angle. It seems they are coming out at about 45 degrees before opening up. The last one was bent a little, but opened just fine. The previous leaf is the one it is leaning against, and it was originally leaning against the larger leaf across from it. This one is bent a little more however. Is the a result of the P Stem not opening up enough to allow the leaf to emerge upwards normally?

Is this normal? I have been getting a new leaf every 4-5 days. They were coming out straight up at first, but now this. I at first had this potted in a 8 inch pot, and after 2 weeks potted it in a 12, and just earlier today potted it in a 20 inch (3 weeks after first re-potting). Each time I have re-potted just as the roots were reaching the bottom of the container, meaning they were not entangled, and they were not rotted, so I don't think that is the problem, if there is one.

Lastly, there is a small area of black on the leaf. Not sure if it burned, but if you see the spot of black on the leaf, I believe it "sat" on that and somehow burnt, maybe? Can anyone offer any advice? This is grown outdoors, and it has been sunny/partly cloudy off and on past few days, highs reaching 80-85. Thanks guys!

The spot looks like physical damage. My dwarf Cavendishes bruise easily. I took one to the farmers market last week and the newer leaves look like someone was using it for batting practice.

the leaves coming out an an angle is normal. mine do that.

i dont know about the black spot, though. Fungus of some sort? worth keeping an eye on.

Those black spots are bruises and it's literally everywhere on my plants as I tend to walk on them some time. :(
Usually only basjoos and Cavendishes do this kinda of things by themselves for no obvious reason... I also noticed, that it comes after different climatical conditions (very cold night and afterwards very hot day...)

My plants get them to but it tells me to back off watering them...(over watering)

I'm glad you posted this. 2 of my potted pups have done this & it will leave a brown spot on the leaf but no problem otherwise. Don't know why -- they have not been touched, but it's nice to know others had the same thing.
It's not choking.
Love your dogs BTW :)

What if a brand new leaf has those spots? Still fungus?

maybe water is leaking down the leaf as it is emerging and causing some sort of rot. this is just a guess. if the plant is growing well and looks otherwise healthy, i wouldnt worry too much.
