Hi guys, I have a problem. I was tending to my plants yesterday and i seen that my Veluntina was infested with aphids. Now, i was doing some research this morning and found out that i can use vegetable oil, dish soap and water mixed in a pray bottle to help control and kill the aphids that are on my plant. Any advise?... would be greatly appreciated.
I just use the ready made insecticidal soap. I've heard of too many people burning their plants with homemade. I suspect because of detergent soaps.

So the insecticidal soap works just fine?
Absolutely. I would hose the plant down first, let it dry and soak it with the soap. Check it for a few days. you may have to reapply.

I have had great results this year with the insecticidal soap. I bought a madagascar palm (Pachypodium Lamerei) off of ebay and turns out it was infested with spider mites. Of course I didn't notice until after it was in the ground.
Around here the local "Ace Hardware" is well stocked this time of year and has good deals in an effort to compete with HD and the others.
I ended up buying "insecticidal soap" from Garden Safe and it worked very well. The cost was $4.95 for 24 oz and there is a concentrate refill available also.
They advertise that you can use this on sdibles up until the day you harvest!

I wanted to make my own also but just wasn't sure either. If things go like last year and I get the stinging catapillars on my Sweetgums I will probably make up my own just because the trees are so big. I found a few homeade formulas from reputable people that I'm told will work.
The key seems to be a bit of oil (sunflower-canola-cooking). I have also heard to only use Dawn or Ivory soap but that's probably personal preference. Some also say not to use anti bacterial and pure liquid castile soap is what the commercial venders use.

I will post again with the results of my homeade recipe in a couple weeks when I can "beat up" on the stinging catapillars.

When I have a aphid problem, I make my own spray of dishsoap (Dawn is good because it's heavier & sticks better) & hot tap water. It always works. If you use commercial soap, make sure you keep the plant out of direct sun for a day or 2.

As long as you don't go overboard adding the soap, making your own is quite easy. I normally add three or four drops to a spray bottle full with perhaps an ounce of rubbing alcohol as well. The alcohol helps to dry the insects out. I've never had any issues with burning my plants.
