My guess is Ice Cream
That was my guess too, it looks just like mine. I notice guys with some scientific background like Gabe for example like to see a flower for reference.

Not IC, no red rim around leaf and petiole is wrong color.
I can't tell what it is, just what it isn't

this thing is very weird. the pups showed some slight white and green varigation in a striped pattern on the leaves now it seems to be solid green. no trace of the varigation left.
i got it from an old farmer near birmingham, Al.
he told me it produced little bananas so im guessing its some lady finger variety. he had another cultivar and told me it was some type of dwarf . they may not have been related. he didnt even know the proper names.

thanks to the people who tried to i.d. this thing.. i just got the exact same variety or simular plant from another guy who put it in his unidentified group. i asked him to try to remember what it was he couldnt. the tag was lost.. i didnt see any variegation in any of his pups.. all mine were then it went away as they grew. the winter turned his mother p stem was a stump too. it didnt throw up a bunch of pups either.. there is a red hue in the petioles, a thin red ring around the leaves and a powdery stalk. all of these colors seems to vanish when the stalk grows tall all i see is mostly solid green. pic coming soon.

This all sounds/looks pretty similar to my Ice Cream. There is a powdery-colored stem, a pink petiole/leaf midrib and a redish/pink outline to the leaves. I can't guarantee that's what your plant is, but that's how mine looks.

Ron, I purchased what was supposed to be a 'manzano' banana tree from bananatree.com. Only later did I see the negative reviews... Well, the plant I received is now about 20 ft tall!!! I have no idea what variety it is, but lots of people who grow bananas have told me it is NOT 'manzano'.
I think your tree looks alot like the mystery banana plant that I have. I am going to take pictures of it tomorrow morning and post here. I don't think yours is as tall as mine, but it looks alot like mine did a few months ago.

Ron,
I think what you are calling variegation on you pup is simply a nutrient issue. I've seen my bananas and cannas both do this, especially early in the season. Once it warms up and/or I fertilize, the leaves usually return to their normal color.

thanks for your input.. i have seen this pattern on a canna (striped beauty) which is permanent and only on this one banana myself so its new to me.:bananas_b

That's pretty fat for common banana. If it grows any bigger/taller could be a Saba? Has any fruited yet?
(How're the fruits of your mango, or is that your neighbor's?)

The banana plant has not fruited yet, but I'm hoping it does after hurricane season is over.
The mango tree in the background is my 'Carrie' mango tree. Most of my friends and family agree it is the best mango they have tried. It also stays under 20 ft tall! :)
I love the flavor of the Carrie, but my favorite is 'Nam Doc Mai(NDM)'. The problem with NDM is that the fruit tends to split on the tree during periods of heavy rain...which is mango season down here. :(
In total I have 4 different varieties. Carrie, Glenn, Malika, and Nam Doc Mai. All have excellent flavor and little to no fiber.
I haven't posted many pics in my gallery, but plan on posting pics of all my trees soon. I have a celeste fig, monroe avocado, 2 jaboticabas(small leaf), lisa atemoya, hamlin orange, persian lime, dwarf cavendish and mystery banana plants ordered from bad online vendors :( ,.. also piper nigrum vine(black pepper), Alano and Hasya Sapodilla(a.k.a. nispero or zapote), Kohala longan, and a yellow cacao tree.

mario, that does look the same... the leaves seem to shread easy too i see...either that or you have real high winds..
i got a pup this year from another member here. he couldnt id the thing either ..he said he forgot what it was called because he has a lot of other varieties... i saw the grandma bulb and it was a giant. it took a little strenth to move the corm. he cut off a pup for me. i have it growing in another part of my yard. it had the same powder on the juvinile pup stalk and the same pinkish hue on the base of the bigger plant.
everyone here says its ice cream..you will get fruit before me because of your more tropical weather down there.

Im just hoping to get fruit so I can identify it. It's bad enough I expected tiny manzano bananas from this gigantic plant! I never wanted such a large plant, but it is a beautiful specimen. I hope the bananas are just as good. Hopefully plantains... since I never expected any... :)
As for the leaves shredding...I'm sure y'all could imagine that we occasionally have pretty strong winds during the summer even if hurricanes don't hit. I have cavendish varieties that don't shred much, but have seen SEVERAL banana plants around my area with shredded leaves. I think it's a combination of plant type and geographic area....but, I could be off by a mile.
I know goingbananas.com is nearby and has a huge variety of bananas. I sent them a pic of my tree and they were clueless!

im starting with the pups this is the base of the follower pup.this is as big as any other fruiting size banana i have. this is a pup. remember these pups have a pinkish midrib and a waxy underleaf.then they turn almost solid green and the powder disappears at maturity and the trunk is almost golden with pinkish hue.

this is a pic showing the measurement midways up the stalk..i suppose this thing is gonna put out a massive head of bananas one day?? it seem to be designed that way huh? .http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=25132&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=25132)
its maybe a common variety from south of the border? i dont think the old guy sold me anything too rare. i was looking at a handful of possible matches.all from south of the border.

i think the powder wax banana has finally decided to flag. i deleted a lot of my pics so i thought it was necessary to deleted some of my posts where i was referring to the pics. here is a few pics to show the history on this plant.... so far it has never put out water suckers only swords .. the pups are always fire red from surface then they turned pink then they go mostly olive green and have white powder on the p stem and petiole..

bump...
ok i see female flowers now.as you can see the leaves dont look like rajapuri but the female flowers sure do.the female flowers are bright pink and have a little yellow. i didnt see any wide leaves or any red splotches..the leaves look like orinocohttp://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=32975&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=32975)
another feature maybe a helpful key to identification is the red streak on the fruit..some of you may have seen red streaks on the fruit of your harvest...i didn't see it on my dwarf Orinoco they are on all the fingers.. in a short while maybe they will fade?? one more thing i found strange is the texture of the female flowers. they feel like plastic and they are not dripping with nectar.they are clean and are kinda on the dry side...no they are not withering either..yep the female flowers are lasting even is this hot weather... http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=32976&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=32976)
here is a wide shot of the whole terminal bud and the flowers.http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=32977&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=32977) update..this is Orinoco..only with a high amount of red in pups and on the new fruit...the terminal bud bract fell finally..they were not truly persistent. the female flowers were set on staying.. finally started producing nectar and they had to be removed manually to prevent rot. http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=33254&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=33254)
