:goteam: Hello Banana friends: :goteam:
This is my very first banana plant ever. This MUSA BASJOO pup was given to me by a kind gardener from another forum. It came from British Columbia, Canada. I have recently put it in the middle of my brand new lily garden. Figured it would offer some shade to the lilies, as they get none whatsoever.
I buried the pup in some rich compost with a bit of blood and bonemeal worked into the soil, to give it a great start. It seems to be doing terrific so far. This shot was taken about 5 days ago now, but want to show it from really tiny to really huge. I will post more peeks and continue to update my progress in this thread, as the season wears on, and as the plant grows.
This banana plant is in a south site where it will get all day sunshine and evening too! I bet it will be one huge tree. I am sooooo enjoying this experience, even though my little plant is just tiny yet...

You will never see it coming, as it grows to incredeible sizes. The next year in the spring you will have maybe 1,8m tall plant. :D

With another half a dozen or so pups growing around it :ha:

Yup, I am aware that it will be huge, and that it will produce many pups next Spring around the base of the plant. I fully intend on 'de-pupping' and either moving them to other areas, or giving them away.
Oh how exciting this is. I will take another shot today, so you can see how it's coming along. Like I said, the 1st shot was taken 5 days ago. Boy these things grow quickly. I am impressed. I will show a shot too, of the entire lily garden, so you can see where my banana plant is situated.
Ok, I'll go get a shower, so I can go out and snap a few shots. Be back to post them shortly...
: )
So far so good HBL, don't like being the fly in the ointment. Mine got to about 3 1/2 foot last year from that size. I protected the p-stem with straw bales and lost it due to excessive cold. The corm barely survived, probably due to me uncovering too early. This year I plan on mulching with leaves assuming that they will make better contact with the soil and provide better insulation. I'll also use freeze pruf on the p-stem and cover with a tarp. Definitely read as many cold hardy threads as you can and learn from others(mine) mistakes. Good luck with your new baby.

Thanks, Bob.
I guess there are all kinds of takes on this freeze issue, huh? I spoke with two people in Ontario where I am, and they both said they did absolutely nothing to protect their basjoos and both of them return each Spring!
I was planning to do things like them and not worry about it, like they both told me. One person is from Thunder Bay, Ontario - where some of the most severe winter weather can strike!
I am going to do an experiment. I actually have 2 basjoos, but one is still indoors. I am planning to put it outside also soon. I will protect one, and not the other over this coming winter, and see what happens in the spring. I am told this is an extremely hardy banana plant - the hardiest of them all - we'll see...
Anyway, here is my lily garden - the little basjoo pup is at the front, in the middle, but still quite small just yet. The 2nd shot is an upclose shot of the pup...

I love the combination of lilies surrounding the basjoo or any banana. I think JohnNY has this combo in his gallery and I remember wanting to steal that idea myself. Then I went in to collector mode and went a little crazy so I'm thinning out my collection mainly after September based on performance. It will be interesting for all of us to see your results.

Really? I thought you might think I was nutz, putting a huge banana plant in with lilies! I didn't know if it was a good idea or not - I was worrying!
Too funny, that someone thought of it too and that it worked out. The lily flowers will be here only for a short time - so I wanted to see something interesting among them as they slowly die down. I am just as excited as a kid at Christmas time, to watch this thing grow! It's just too cool.
My one neighbor's eyes nearly bulged out of her head, when I told her what the little pup was. She just couldn't believe it, and is also excited to see it grow as well.
Ok, here is a shot of my indoor basjoo, that is going outside shortly. The shot is taken in front of my indoor asiatic lilies that are dying back, but it grows under my fluorescent light system...

Tell me about that. :D I take pictures of my nanas every one or 2 days and they grow extremely well here, there always abvious in the end of the day, how much the plant has grown...Even when I look in the morning and evening. :D

There is a man, a very experienced grower in Germany and he wanted to get rid of his basjoos (he has up to 30 of them, one large mat). So when the winter came, he didn't protect them at all. Several nights it went to -15°C (5°F) and he thought they were dead. How surprising it was, when 30 (instead of 20 frozen plants, that he wanted to kill and keep only 10) sprouted in the spring. Some of them reached the height of 1,6m till November.
By the way the lilies aren't so bad either... Ou yes, they are as lovely as you are. ;)

Lemme tell you something. You might have seen some pics of my garden around and if you watched it carefully, you would have noticed, that the nanas are growing along tomatoes, paprikas, carrots, strawberries, blueberries.
So who's really nuts? I think I am. :D Yet I think that the nanas are suitable to be planted out anywhere in the garden. They are that lovely and both - esthetic and full of purposes.
THis is not shouting, just wanted to separate it from the responses above.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU, I'm GLAD TO HEAR, THAT YOUR ADDICTION IS GETTING WORSE AND WORSE. I MEAN BETTER AND BETTER. :D

I notice how quickly these suckers grow, too. Very cool. I will show pics often, so don't worry.
Not surprised to hear the story about the basjoo plant surviving, because I've heard similar stories from others also. What a terrific plant.
I gotta go throw some water down for my little banana guy - it's getting hot out there. Debating on whether to keep my second pup inside or put it out as planned. I would love to keep it inside and put it out next Spring - maybe see some fruits! Who knows what I'll do - we'll see...

The only problem in freezing to the ground in no fruit. But that is the only reason I grow naners, to see the fruit, so it's MUST BE attitude in here... :D

I think a big factor in survivability of basjoo, and other plants, is how well they are established. Our local botanical garden had a mat of basjoo that they protected every winter for years. Then, once, they decided they wanted basjoos in a different location, so they planted some in the new spot, and didn't bother protecting the old mat anymore. One of the people, there, told me, "We don't even cover it anymore, but it comes back fine, every year." I think it's because it has a large established root system, and that newer plantings would have to be protected, at least for the first couple of years.
I've seen the same thing with figs. I know people with huge trees, who never do anything with them, and they come back fine. I've had a couple, where I forgot to cover them in the first winter after planting, and they were toast, but now I have a fig that I had been covering for several years, and didn't get around to it last year, but there was no problem.

Agreed, in our Botanical garden there is a mat large 2m in diameter, that German guy had them planted about 20 in a small place, like 3x4m and those were all old plants, 3m+. I wouldn't try it with very young plants, HL, but definitely in a year or 2, that should be no problem. :D

It is sound advice and I may be a fool not to take it, but I must do what supposedly cannot be done!
As well, the person in Thunder Bay, Ontario, told me that they never once covered their plant, even when they got their 1st pup in the beginning. I will definitely protect one pup, so I don't end up with nothing, if I fail miserably, but the other will remain uncovered.
One thing I did do though, is I buried the pup deep, when I sunk it into the lily garden. We get snow really fast when it turns cold, and snow is even better than mulch, so I believe the roots will be just fine. I also buried a blood and bonemeal treat over a foot down, to encourage the roots to go deep. They have over 4 months to get established before winter sets in.
Let's see if the people in my neck of the woods are in fact correct in that it does not require any protection, or if come Spring, I'll be sorry!

You are lucky. We have freezes about -5°C (23°F) and the snows holds in the night, but then the day comes and we have 10°C and the snow is gone, turns into water and that goes straight to the soil, but not before it freezes deeply the next night.
Usually, when the hardest frosts come (usually one night or so, sometimes a week, but never more), there's no snow at all and the frosts are deep, yet no plant is protected. Especially peaches dislike such conditions. :D
I lost about 30 seedlings of hardy palms (Trachys, Nannorrhopses,...) because of the snow not able to hold on during the day. They were all wet and then froze to death in the night in -10°C (14°F), little babies. I burried each one of them into the compost with a very, very bad feeling of misery and failure.

I live in a small apartment building, and the owners have given me full permission to put whatever I want, wherever I want! It is too cool. I will definitely be adding more banana plants around the property.

Once I get real good at banana growing, I am going to get this one variety that is small, but the leaves are red! I fell in love with it when I saw it in a picture. There are many kinds out there that are so attractive and ornamental. I can see that this is not just a passing fancy - I am full-blown addicted!

Yup, not to worry D&T - I know all about the hardening off process. I allow my plants to let me know what they can handle, by their response. My banana plant loved the full sun right from the start.
Bob, you know me already - I am embarrassed to admit the real truth of how many times I went outside to check on it! I was so worried. It is just thriving though, and loving it's new sunny position. Yippeeeee.

Well, my mom got me paranoid and told me that my banana plant in the nice green pot was too pretty for out back and that it should be enjoyed indoors by me.
Needless to say, I have now brought it inside! I am so glad I changed my mind - or my mom did, because I sure am enjoying it so close by.
Here it is now...

I also re-thought things and dug up the pup in the lily garden, and potted it up in a large container, placing it by the back door, to replace the one I brought in. I want to protect both of them inside this winter and put them out next Spring, I decided.
Also too, I am germinating some of Tog's seeds so I may have more banana plants yet! I do want to grow one in the ground and definitely will, but I just changed my mind about the basjoo's and where I initially had them. Sorry for the confusion.
I will let you guys know how things go, and I will take a shot soon, of the pup from the lily garden that is now in a big container by the back door. It's not as nice as my one above, and needs some more time yet.

From my experience I think you're wise overwintering them both indoors. At least for the next year or 2 (they're baby plants). Get as big a corm underground to start with as you can. Make sure they have the biggest pots you can give.
Jack Daw
07-12-2009, 05:30 PM
But do keep them in low temps, just above freezing for the winter. If you want to keep them in warm and dry conditions, you might fail, because they need their rest period!!!
If they miss it, they won't be doing well at all...

I can keep one or both in the cool foyer over winter, but was planning to keep one in my living room. I have an indoor fountain that keeps the air quite moist even in winter. I will judge by how the plants respond, I guess.
Read so much contradicting information, so I am just trying to get a bit of experience so I can see for myself. So many different ways to do things I am certain. For now though, all is well.

Well, I already have one outside. Want this one in here with me so I can enjoy it's beauty for awhile. If I see it's suffering I will put it outside for sure.
Don't worry so much - it is soaking up rays in a huge south facing window. I am too possessive to put it outside for now, but just look at it - it's thriving!

my indoor banana plant is doing better than my outdoor one, at this point. Our summer has been uncharacteristically cool, so my indoor pup is loving the warmth inside.

Thank you!
Yup - they are peppers. I've been growing them for years inside, as well as out. I just love them, for their ornamental beauty as well as their tastiness.
I especially like to grow them inside because they produce all year round. The 1st shot is my seed grown 'Purple Cayenne' hot pepper, and the 2nd shot is my 'Tennessee Cheese' sweet pepper.
I've already harvested fruits from both. Here's pics before I harvested them...

Another benefit to growing them inside is that you can grow hot and sweet peppers side by side and never have to worry about cross-pollination.

HBL, why don't you paste a weather sticker to your signature, so that we all can see your weather. ;)
I'll tell you something. We have 30+°C (86+°F) almost every day for about 5 days in a row and then the damn cooldown comes (15°C or 60°F) for 1 damn day, it rains the whole day and we have high speed winds in the lowlands (so bad, that people die in outdoor festivals) and then we almost immediately return back to our 30+°C (86+°F). I don't remember such a strange summer.
Something's going on from certain latitudes... :D Weirdest summer in years.
Nice nana you've got there. I just keep staring at that wonderfully colored midrib. One more thing. After you put your nanas out after the winter, don't do it directly, 'cause you'd fry the leaves, but very very very long adapting period is needed.
Good luck there. ;)

A little late chiming in on this discussion but judging from the recent weather around the nation, all the record lows set its been hard on northern growers. Here in upstate South Carolina we hit 60 degrees twice this weekend, breaking records each day. If it is that cool here I imagine its got to be cooler than that north of here.

Thank you, Alexizhere!
This is my very first banana plant ever, and I am so proud of it. It was sent to me through the mail, by someone from another forum, also in Canada. I am so grateful to her.
I am also in the process of germinating some of Tog's banana seeds as well, but nothing has come up just yet. He told me to be patient because they take awhile, so I am trying to be. I will show a pic as soon as I get a sprout.
Someone else sent me 4 year old musa velutina seeds, also from this forum, but they've been in soil for over a month and a half, and still nothing! Tog had told me to soak them in water for 5 days because they were so old, but I don't think anything will ever come of them. I am glad I have lots of fresh seeds to work with, in the meantime.
I am going to get me a really red banana plant next - one that has green on it, but mostly red. I may even order it, who knows? I am absolutely in love with this one I saw before and have been obsessed with it ever since! I want to get some practice with growing banana plants before I get the one I really long for.
I am so surprised by the beauty of Musa Basjoo though. It really is an attractive plant. The red rib was a total shocker, and unexpected. I am very much enjoying watching it grow. I am going to water it tomorrow morning - first time in a week.

Nope, it's in full sun - it's just shaded from me standing over it taking the picture! It's because of our cool weather that it's not doing as well, but it is warming up recently.
The outdoor plant is improving, and if this warm weather keeps up, I am sure it will be looking like the indoor basjoo in no time.

By the way...
I forgot to mention, I recently added 5 fish to my container pond along with my Lotus plant! I caught them from the river - well, some kids caught them for me, actually.
They've been in my pond for 5 days and they are surviving, but they are scared of people, and go straight to the bottom when you approach them. They are eating the mesquito larvae from my pond.
Anyway, just thought I'd mention that because you can see my pond in the picture.

Well, some serious fighting going on, right? :waving:
As I don't want to be pain in the arse or anything like that and I know that when husband and wife are arguing, I shouldn't interfere, but I want to say something.
When I started with naners, I had 2 SDCs (so the potential height was somewhere between 1,4 and 1,8, unlike possible 5m with basjoo), I only had one large pot and many smaller. So I put one SDC into a large pot, and one SDC into a small pot.
It was a question of maybe 4 or 5 weeks until I saw the difference. The one planted in small pot wasn't growing that vigorously, as the one in the big pot and soon the time came, when the pot became his limit. It started producing less leaves on the mother plant and sent out about 10 pups.
Pups grew to about 4th leaf and then stopped as well.
I had to repot the plant and only then I saw that vigorous growth again. But now it was slowed down by all these pups. On the other hand, the larger pot was feeding 1 mother plant and 3 pups, that were quickly about 3/4 of mother plant. Here I am, almost 1,5 years from then and the pup in small pot hasn't reached the height, vigor or leaf-size of the one placed in large pot. By large I mean 15 gallons.
Also the roots for the small plant weren't curved and it had nice, natural structure, as if it were growing in the wild.
Now I don't want to make any boo hoo, but imagine, what curved roots would do to a large, tall plant. It would undermine it's stability, vigor...
Maybe that's what Bob was referring to. :0517:
Oh yeah, Jack...
The boys looked to be around nine/ten.
: )
Oh yeah, that's a good age for many particular reasons. :ha:
Hollyberry, this is killing me but I've given so much thought to Basjoo's and bananas in general during the past 11 months, I think growing your plants the first couple of years in pots is the way to go for everyone growing basjoo north of zone 7.
You're doing the right thing.....................your pots are way too small.:ha:
Yep, til the corm is large enough to be able to survive winters, it is better off in a large pot.
HBL, even our botnaists in the Botanical Garden protected it during the first few winters and then only mulch. It's just safer that way. I don't know about that surviving of such a small plant. And trust me, when I say, that we have Canadian winters only in our mountains. ;) :)
And I wouldn't definitely advice you to put it to ground now. It's too late in the season. ;)
Yup , you're absolutely right HBL, I stand corrected. I will absolutely give full consideration before making a reply. Let me know how your overwintered plant comes back next spring:p
The Hollyberry Lady

No, I am not going to put them in the ground - I was just teasing, but keep in mind that there are people in Ontario that put thier 1st year basjoo in the ground and they did in fact return next Spring! One person even lives in Thunder Bay, where some of the coldest winters can strike! You are obviously underestimating basjoo's hardiness.
Also, I kind of like the fact that my plants won't get overly huge in smaller pots - don't worry, I know what I'm doing. Besides too, the roots haven't even filled their starter pots yet entirely. I will transplant them a bit later and things will be ok.

Basjoos fruit in colder climates at the height of 4,5m, after about 2 or 3 years of growing, if overwintered properly. You might get a bloom late next year or early in 2011. :D

Sorry ... ..............excuse me! Hollyberry, you certainly know how to bring out the "best" in people:ha::ha::ha:
As Far as the flowering , after watching Scot Nelsons video and seeing how bananas are "supposed" to grow straight through and flower naturally I wonder how far each stress we put on them in colder climates sets them back. For example, dig it up to overwinter= stress. Repot, overwinter bare root, setting out in the cooler spring weather, cool nights during summer all unatural. I'm not so concerned about my basjoos but the others say. D. Namwah, Ca. Gold, veinte Cohol , I decided the best course of action is to plant in ground , overwinter in at least 15 gallons pots for a small plant ,as warm and bright as possible(I'm looking in to renting greenhouse space so I can keep them consistantly warm ). In the spring those that I'm really keen on will be planted in the little hoop house so I can keep them warmer at night. This will come off when it's consistantly hot.
As far as your basjoo 3-4 years would seem right for the corm and all to develop sufficient size and be able to produce as opposed to one grown outdoors in a naturally warmer climate that may do it in half that.
Bob's nose is slightly different, longer. :D But yeah, cool. We love you guys. Both of you. There's some strange flow of thoughts between you.

I posted this pic somewhere already, this pic's from early April (like 3rd or 4th) and I wanted to show you, HBL, how a strong mat (protected with some mulch) recovers from the winter. Those plants were about 2,5m (8,2ft) high. Black in the center usually means rotten, but in general I think that only 2 of those larger didn't come back. There were also 7 new shoots.

Well...
I have been procrastinating posting here - - - because I didn't want to hear any 'I told you so" comments from none other than - Bob!
: O
My indoor banana plant was thriving and it would have continued to thrive, even though Bob disagreed - and Jack backed him up.
I will try to explain what happened, in Rhyme...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/humptydumpty.gif
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, oh my God my banana had a great fall!
All the king's horses and all the king's men, couldn't put my banana plant back together again!!!
: O
That's right, my banana plant fell off of a stool I had it on momentarily, and kerboomed to the floor - smashing the ceramic pot it was in and everything! Leaves were torn! A nightmare! Sniff sniff.
: (
I cried when it happened, but I immediately picked it up and transferred it into another pot, filling it with more soil. Then I put it in the bathtub and gave it a good watering, with some of my transplant shock Starter mix, and let it drain for an hour.
I brought it back out into the livng room, but kept it in bright diffused light for a few days. It is now perking up again, but all the lower leaves turned yellow and died - it really slammed to the floor hard! I know it did a number on it.
Poor banana baby. No one knows how bad I feel about it. I had to remove the lower leaves that were once perfect. Sniff sniff. How awful, but I am now coming to terms with it. My pictures showed how perfect it once was.
: (
I am not sure if my pride will allow me to post a shot. I am so disappointed that it happened. If it was outside, it wouldn't have happened at all - I know Bob.
On a bright note - my outside basjoo is really looking good now. Leaves are getting very big. I will show a pic soon...
: )
Yikes............no joy here. Show me any gardener who hasn't done something like this and I'll show you one who hasn't grown too many things. If it makes you feel better I stepped on a Velutina outdoors July 4th weekend (may have had a "friendly glow" about me, this was right after the infamous hot wing challenge) and snapped it in half, so outdoor plants aren't immune. Hope it makes a full recovery and then some, then back to timely comments on "Bonsai Basjoo".
The Hollyberry Lady

Alright, now I do feel better Bob...
but I'm still not showing a picture! Don't want you to see the bare leafless lower trunk! My friend thinks it looks "cool" - I could have choked him!
At least my outdoor banana is coming along now. I am not giving up on my indoor plant though. One of the leaves on it is just massive now! The plant is definitely recovering, because it is growing again, and about to open a new leaf soon!
Sorry to hear about your July 4th incident.

mourne for dead, but only at night,
so that you can enjoy the life! (with them ;) )
I hope this song sounds at least half as good as the original I transformed it from.

Something very disheartening happened this morning at 2 am...
I caught the tail endings of some drunken thieves stealing my potted plants by the back door! I am so incredibly sad to report that my banana plant, my decorative pot of mixed hot peppers, my red geranium, and my yellow rudbeckia, have all been stolen!
The worst yet, is that my nelumbo pond was dumped, and my fish are all dead!
: O
: (
I am too devastated to type anymore - thought it might help, but I really am floored and so incredibly disappointed. I actually caught them in the act but they had a car, and most of the plants were already loaded into the vehicle, so they got away fast.
The only thing left was my white swan cone flower and my passion flower vine, but the rest is history!!!
Have one last look, because everything is gone now!

Oh, sorry to hear that. How was it? "Misfortunes never come singly."
Just one pic (http://www.bestfunnypictures.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/misfortunes_never_come_singly.jpg) to describe what this statement's about.
Don't worry Sherry, everything will be OK. Plant stealing is an issue here as well. Strange world. Just make sure your next banana is safe, so that it recovers well.
There's nothing anyone can say..............."Those Bastards!!!" I cant tell you how bad I feel for you , your lost plants and I think especially the poor fish. I can't imagine what kind of ( you know) would do this. If they had a clue they probably could have rang the bell at a more appropriate hour and most gardeners are happy to share!................."Those Bastards!"

I really would like to thank you guys very much for being so uplifting and supportive! It really means a lot to me. Kind of cheers me up a bit.
I will rise above this I know, but it hasn't even been 24 hours yet, and I really am feeling so sad about it. I will come to terms with it though and accept it, I was just really getting attached to my little minnows, and so much enjoying feeding them in the mornings. I am just so sorry for their bitter end. I am still crying over it - I can't help it, I am very sensitive.
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/pic-6050-thumb-1.jpg
On the bright side, I suppose it is a good thing now, that I didn't set my indoor banana plant outside, or they would have taken that too!!! At least I still have one left! It recovered from the fall now completely! Also, every plant they took from me, began as one tiny seed, and I have tons more where they came from! I have many more hot pepper plants doing great inside as well. They will never stop the Hollyberry Lady completely!
They didn't get everything, and I intend on carrying on as per usual, but taking my pots into our foyer overnight - the doors to our building are locked so they can't get to them next time! I am taking the vine and trellis in every single night too. They'll never get my plants ever again!
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/flower_sad-1.gif
The thieves actually came back for my pond and my passion flower vine but this is when I heard them at the window and went to investigate - interrupting their thievery. I said 'what do you think you're doing'? through the window. They replied 'ah wrong building - sorry' and then walked back to their car where I could hear girl's voices saying c'mon hurry. I saw nothing in their hands, so I actually thought that they were just about to steal my plants but that I had startled them before they could.
If I had any idea what was actually going on, I would have flew down the stairs and absolutely flipped out - you have no idea! My plants would have never left the parking lot! The plants were up so close to the building that you have to actually go outside to see them, so I didn't even know they were stolen until after the thugs were already gone - when I got an acutely weird feeling and decided to go outside just to make sure everything was alright...
: O
The blood drained from my face as I opened the back door, and saw my upsidedown pond, and nearly all my plants were gone! What an awful and dreadful feeling - I just stood there frozen and shocked - choking instant tears until I could get back inside. I totally had a chance to stop it from happening but I honestly had no idea that the damage had already been done. Oh Bob, my poor fish!

: O
Who knows what they would have done with a confrontation from me - maybe I was spared from something far worse. I am starting to see the positives in this situation - it just really made me sick to my stomach at first. I am bawling like Lloyd and Harry watching Pacific Bell commercials! I know they were just plants, but some of you guys know that I put my heart and soul into my plants. This is actually my very first time ever having one outrightly taken from me - 4 of my most prized plants at once! Wow.
I still have one other musa basjoo and it quickly recovered from the fall last week. I also am trying to germinate a few different banana seeds right now as we speak - Lasiocarpa being one of them! Willy you are very sweet, and we'll see how things turn out next year.
You guys better give me some good solid information on how to keep my one basjoo surviving in my apartment or cold foyer over winter - we'll talk about that stuff later though.
Thanks again, banana buddies.

You guys are all so nice!
I worried I was ramblimg on about it, and that you guys might think I was nutz to be bawling and feeling depressed, but it seems you all totally understand how I feel. Your symapathy means a lot.
The plants that I managed to salvage are now brought in for the night, into our foyer, behind a locked steel door! Totally visible from the many windows though - just enough to tease, and say 'Look what you won't be getting your dirty little thieving mitts on tonight'!!!
: O
I am glad that this will never happen to me again, but so sad that it had to cost me my four best plants, and the death of my fish to learn this very hard lesson. Even though I can replace everything, it just really sucks that my beautiful display was robbed like that. Wow.
Remember that I still have a basjoo indoors, and it will give me pups in the Spring, even in a pot, won't it? All hope is not lost, but thank you so much for all the nice offers to help me. You guys are very kind and thoughtful. I hope this never happens to any of you. Honestly, I wouldn't wish it on even my worst enemy.
I was almost sick with anxiety and worry over if my plants would be cared for by the thieves or not, but my mom told me I just had to let go of them and not drive myself crazy like this. I just know that my plants will not be given the care and attention I once gave them. So sad.
Tomorrow is a new day...

Neither have I, it almost looks like a slightly red, ordinary vetricosum. :ha:

You maybe don't know it, but I'm that kind of an ***hole, that puts his plants to limits almost in everything. Curiosity led me to plant one Maurelli to a full sun in south facing garden and the other Maurell in almost full shade with only about 2 hours of late, evening sun. Besided these factors, the first Maurelli with sun is in my vegatable garden so I water it regularly and the second one is in the front yard which is pretty much living on its own.
Both plants had the same color, amount of leaves, roots systems, vigor and everything in the beginning. Now look at these pics.
My hand is in the pics to compare the size of both plants.
Sunny, irrigated part of the garden

Jack that thing is just gorgeous! I am in love with red banana plants like that. Wow! ShearMe, the one Bob sent you is beautiful. What a nice guy Bob is, even though I tease him. He's the best.
UPDATE:
Yes, well I have since discovered that someone in the building next to ours has taken my plants! I already suspected it, but when my red geranium was returned last night and left behind someone's car shortly after it got dark - this confirmed it for me! Do you believe someone put one of my plants back?!!!
: O
I was looking out my window last night and saw what looked to be a potted plant behind someone's vehicle. Of course, I flew outside to check it out and low and behold it was my geranium - good as new!!!
I immediately knew for certain that the thief was close by because no one would come back to return a stolen plant! How obvious is that? I think I even know who it is, but I will plan this out carefully before I make any moves, and not act impulsively. Rushing off and angrily confronting them will only make me a target. I think they put their friends up to it and the plants are likely not in their apartment.
I would have preferred to get my peppers and banana back, but just getting anything back at all, gave me hope - and solved a real piece of puzzle. I knew it wasn't just a chance thievery because like I said, they were completely sheltered and hidden from strangers. Only people that live around here know about them, and it certainly was no one from our building, that's for sure!
Anyway, part of me feels better now that they returned the geranium, because at least it's no big mystery. What a bunch of idiotic fools to do that, but all the better for me. They may as well have left a sign with the geranium that reads 'We live here'!!!!!
: O
Easy HBL..........no getting mushy! Glad to hear you got one back, wait and see is the right attitude..........it's got to be hard to return them efficiently(?), maybe you'll get lucky. If not you're stilll up one from yesterday:woohoonaner:

That's not even fair.... you put so much effort into your plants (and fish pond) and someone can just snatch them from you. If it makes you feel any better... they won't grow nearly as happily or healthily for the "new owners". I say motion-sensing light is in order. Maybe 2. Even one of those fake security cameras....

Just read your post- I'm sick that someone in your neighborhood would steal your precious plants then kill your fish to get a pond. There are really twisted people in this world.
I have no doubt that if they had knocked on your door and ASKED, you might have given them a pup or two and advice on how to care for them. Amazing.
I have a Loquat (chinese plum) tree in my front yard. Every March to April it has an abudance of ripe fruit. I see people pull up and begin to pick so I happily say "take all you want." They jump in their cars and speed away. Why is STEALING more appealing to some nitwits than just being civilized? An elderly lady who used to walk in my neighborhood asked one day. I gave her a bucket, and had a neighbor's son carry her treasure home for her. The next day I came home from work to find a box of fancy chocolates on my door with a thank you note. There are civilized people out there.
This convinces me to keep my nanas in pots with topsoil. I have plans to get a handtruck to move them if I need to; a thief would have a serious problem lifting them. Then again, there are nuts who would try to kill what they can't take. So, it's a locked gate and if I need to; a shotgun with birdshot (or rock salt), and perhaps getting a dog. Or I could get a livestock shock fence.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hope you and your plants can recover, and the theives have a needed encounter with the police.

You guys are just so nice and supportive - it really is helping me feel better.

I have now spoken with the owner of the next building and he has no problem believing that the new problematic tenants that just recently moved into his building are somehow responsible.
When I told him how my red geranium was left back in the parking lot the very next night, he totally agreed that this proves they are real close! He apologized to me up and down, but I assured him it was no fault of his and that I did not blame him at all. He just felt bad, I could tell - especially when I mentioned the fish.
I don't think the geranium was so much 'returned', ShearMe, as it was 'chucked' - discarded. Red geraniums are as common as anything and compared to the other three beauties it really slimmed in comparison!
As far as a motion light, my plants were under a spotlight practically, but the person who took them was very familiar because it was done with such confidence and know-how, that it floored me.
Anyway, even though my indoor banana plant had a fall off of a stool by accident and lost some leaves, I put it outside this morning. Of course it will come in at night so it isn't stolen. Here it is...

No, but seriously, the friendship and the sympathy mean so much to me, and I sure appreciate it very much. Thanks for helping me get through such a real tough misfortune.
The truth is I miss my plants and I know they are already on the decline. I just know thieves like that would never care for them like me, so thanks Taylor. I am just sad that they are gone and I want them back. I have seeds to replace every one of them, but that's not the point. Please no poems unless it's something like .....glad you are here, so I'm buying you a beer:ha: (didn't think I could write poetry I bet!)
T-Girl, a hand truck is the best investment any gardener could buy. I believe everyone here growing in pots should have them.
Zac, the seedling is growing fairly quickly, the seed havent sprouted anything on top but the ones visible at the top of soil(since you sent me a plantation full!) have started splitting so I have to assume there are roots below and stems will emerge shortly. Let me know if it doesn't revert. I may have another small one ready soon.

I picked up your plant today, HBL, but the nursery I bought it at is notorious for mislabeling. The label says "Fatsia" but the only plant on Google with that name is Fatsia japonica. I does look similar to my Ice Cream, so at least we know its a Musa! :D

No, no, Bob, I won't write a love poem - not to worry! It was a funny thought though. Roses are red, violets are blue...
Anyway, I saw a couple of tenant's staring admiringly at the new basjoo that's outside now. They were probably thinking that I didn't have another one! I always have plan B. I am referring to good tanants, not the thieves.

The 'Alma' variety of paprika - which is one of the peppers used to make the paprika spice, is extremely ornamental and pretty.

No worries.... your 1 remaining Basjoo will surely pup soon enough, and you'll be able to laugh at the thieves who probably can't even identify it! LOL! If you see it planted out in the yard in your climate, you can bet it is yours. (This is the part where I would advocate "stealing it back".)

As stunned and bewildered as I am to have to tell you all this - the nightmare has happened again!!!
I went to the grocery store early this evening and my last basjoo banana plant was stolen right out from under our windows in broad daylight!!!
: O
Totally obvious now that it is in fact someone in the buliding beside ours that watched for me to leave. I am shocked that they did it in the daytime. They didn't take all of my plants this time but they got the best one, and the pot it was in was real expensive.
The good news is, I know who is responsible and the Police will be on their doorstep first thing in the morning!!! They were too busy to come tonight so an officer will be here tomorrow morning. I am not going to take this lying down.
Someone offered to mail me a basjoo last week, so I won't be totally without thankfully, but it's not the point. I am going to have to change how I do gardening here and put everything directly in the earth - no more nice pots for low-lives to steal. I am so crushed that this happened to me again in such a short span of time.
I should have known better this time - it's my fault.

Thank you Zac! It IS very wrong and it is nearly getting the best of me. I just can't believe the audacity to do it in broad daylight!
I guess I highly underestimated them. In the morning though, they'll come to find out that they highly underestimated me as well! I think it is the company of these low-life losers in the building beside ours and I got the license plates of several suspicious and shady charachters to give to the cops in the morning.
Calling the Police makes me feel like I am not a victim, and that I am doing something about it. I will no longer be leaving anything in pots outside, unfortunately. I just cannot have this keep happening. I am really crushed over it.
Bob's new plants are the only things helping me right now, not to fully lose heart. Thank you, Bob!

How early are the police arriving? Do they require a warrant of any kind in Canada to search someone's home?
I'd feel better too with some fancy new plants sent by a friend, especially that perfect plumeria.

They're coming at 9am, so I am off to bed now. Yes, they will need a warrant, but not to go to some of the houses belonging to the license plates I collected and have a look around outside. Maybe my plants are sitting on someone's patio out in the open. We'll see...

It's curious how the biggest challange, when you want to grow basjoo in Canada, are thieves and not the cold winter. I'm so surprised they did it again and more to that, how obviously they wanted only banana this time (thus maybe even the first time, but other plants were just a manoeuvre).
Wish you good luck with that and hope that the policemen will shackle the thieves to central heating unit and give them hell of a beating with service sap (that's what police does here with thieves, when they steal too little to be trialed or reported for).
Stealing is a problem everywhere though (maybe except Arabic countries), but plant stealing is just sick.

Hollyberry Lady this theft is most certainly NOT your fault!!!!
I know that here in San Antonio Texas there are theives that go into people's yards and steal expensive plants. They're known as "landscape rustlers" or "plant rustlers" and there's nothing funny about it. Billions of dollars are lost to these animals.
If there is any way at all to lock your garden up, borrow a friends large dog or get a shock fence and install it. The shock fence not only keeps animals in, it keeps animals out.
My plants are in 18 gallon muck buckets, to ugly for the "average" theif, but it's filled with a topsoil mix that would break a thief's back.
Here's an idea: If you are allowed to put up flyers or take out a public service announcement in the local paper, make it clear that there are theives in the area who are burglarizing property. (you don't have to say they steal plants.) Ask everyone to keep their eyes open, and if they see anything or anyone suspicious, to call the police and to take pictures with their cell phones or cameras if it's safe. You don't have to say who you think is doing it.
Many years ago I worked two jobs after being left destitute after a divorce. At my night job, there was a thief who routinely stole people's food out of the frig. Management did nothing but put a sign on the frig saying "don't steal." People on my shift were the most hit- we were putting our food in just as the 2nd shift was going home. One night was just too much- so I took a piece of paper and with my left hand I wrote a note telling the thief that I hoped they were ok because I had been feeling sick for a while and had sores in my mouth and throat (I didn't, of course but the thief didn't know that). I didn't sign it, and left it in the locker room. The next few days were histerically funny (for us)- management wanted to know WHO wrote the note because they wanted to fire the person (not the thief), several people on 2nd shift were complaining they had big doctor's bills (I wondered why, hee hee), and no food was stolen for months. Of course, no one on my shift had any idea who put the note up (they bought me sodas for a month).
The flyer will let the thieves know people are aware and watching. And a visit from the police followed up by the flyer will serve as an annoucement to all theives that they won't be tolerated.
Whatever you decide to do, we're with you. :waving:

I'm really proud of you for holding your composure. At this point, I'd be walking to their door with a shotgun and an angry Bulldog.
Surely people who steal plants have no lives (especially if they are watching your house waiting for you to leave!). Therefore, I wouldn't be afraid of any retaliation when you have those 2 things to defend you. (LOL).

Thank you everyone. Don't know what I'd do without all of your support. It sure does help me.
The Police came this morning and are on the case. They are going to check out the license plates that I collected and see if they can find my plant/s for me. I was told they'd be in touch. They totally agree that it was someone in the area, who is watching and waiting for their opportunity.
I had a friend who had their bar-b-que stolen and the Police found it two weeks later, so I am not giving up hope yet. In the meantime, there are no more potted plants outside - they're all in the foyer until I decide what to do.
: (
Obviously I can no longer put out potted plants - something I've been doing for three years now here, with no problems or thievery. This is not going to get the best of me, but it really has depressed me and left me with an awful feeling. I did have a nightmare earlier last week that it happened a 2nd time, but I just thought it was because of the first time. Now the nightmare has come true!!!
Just gonna leave it to with the Police and see what happens. Thanks again guys for your support, tips, and advice. I am just going to go have a nap and lick my wounds - not feeling too well today. Don't worry - I'll be ok.

Today's words of hope from Taylor: When I was little, I got a totally awesome Mongoose bike for Christmas. A few weeks after Christmas, it was stolen. We checked local pawn shops, neighbor's yards, but had no luck. After about 2 months, the bike was tossed into our yard rusty, paint chipped off, and plastic chain cover broken. Nonetheless, I did get it back.

This is not over yet. I could very well find them, or the cops could too. Oh yes, sometimes the Police need time to put to put it together, but they may get more reports of stolen plants and with people's tips they can find stuff - even if it's weeks later.
Everything they have taken from me, is now replaced. Right down to my Basjoo. I am going out today, for another bike ride around the neighbourhood, to have me a look around. Those plants and my gorgeous pots will stand out like sore thumbs, if they're stupid enough to leave them out...
: )
P.S. They were idiotic enough to come back a 2nd time and risk being seen in broad daylight, indicating that brain cells are few and far between, so I wouldn't doubt that they would be brazen enough to leave them out in plain view...

Definately get the flyers out. The fact that the police have come out, plus the flyers getting everyone to keep their eyes peeled for burglars and people vandalizing property (that's all it has to mention) will make it clear to them that this is not going to be tolerated.
I'm glad everything's been replaced, but the point is to recover the stolen property and prosecute the thieves.
I wish you the best.:02:

Tenants are very angry and feel like they were stolen from as well. Everyone really enjoyed the plants, and so the thieves didn't just steal from me, but from everyone in our building!

The thieves are definately going to be paranoid for a long time to come knowing everyone is ticked off at them and watching.
The only trouble I've had at my home was a bunch of kids who went through the neighborhood slashing tires. They got my car and my truck. I noticed something wrong with my tire before I hit the highway. Over $200 for new tires. I was fit to be tied. The new officer who came out treated it like a joke- "just kids having fun." If it's so much fun, let them slash their parent's tires and see how funny it is. Anyway I found out many homes in my neighborhood had been hit, over $4,000 in damage. And the same cop- "it's just kids having fun."
I decided to have fun. I got together a reward, $200 and sent the word out on the street to every kid who passed by that the money was for the arrest of those who did it- NO QUESTIONS ASKED!
It only took a week before a member of the group turned the others in. I got the other car owners together and we went as a group to the police station. I asked who turned the group in, and gave him the money in front of the others. When he started to leave, I asked where he thought he was going. His father replied that they were going home. I replied: "I said we would not ask any questions. We never said we would drop the charges!"
We asked for the money to cover our tires immediately- we had the receipts with us. The parents had a choice: pay the damages or be prosecuted and sued, watch the thugs go to juvy. They paid.
No one has had a problem since. At least not from them. It pays to get justice. Perhaps a "no questions asked" reward will help here. Criminals let their greed guide them. :ha:

A kind soul from this forum just sent me another basjoo, and a dwarf cavendish too - I am thrilled to have another basjoo! I'll show pics later - just a stump right now. So grateful to have a second chance. The thieves will never get this one.
: )
P.S. Although it was comical to entertain thoughts of, I did not offer a reward for my stolen plants - I've been too busy potting up all my new pups! I have several other new ones also, so it's made me pretty much forget what happened - which might be a good thing. I don't want those thieves to rob me of anything else - like my good time. I know how they do it now, so they will never get the chance again. They can drool jealously at the gorgeous specimens - that their rip-off mitts will never touch!

I'll be posting pictures of mine shortly. Dwarf Cavendish, my first nana plants ever. They seemed to winter nicely indoors near my windows, with a quarter turn every day.
One of my cats took to nibbling on the leaves; the others don't like the taste. He really only does it when I'm sitting on the couch- sort of like a toddler trying to see what he can get away with. The leaves aren't all torn up, they're fine. He loves watching out the window under a leaf- like a "jungle-kitty."
I wonder what he's going to do when they go outside? I'm waiting until the nighttime temps are in their 60's.
The only problem I've experienced is those darned gnats. Any suggestions on how to get rid of or control them without poisoning the plants or cats?
I did find paw paw trees. They look like twigs now, but in two years I'll have paw paws.
Your plant looks beautiful. I'll bet if you talked about the reward money with neighbors, the thieves got the message. They should never come out of hiding and look over their shoulders.

Yup Matt - that's it! It looks good eh? Thanks so much for sharing it with me. It couldn't have some at a better time, just after my other two were stolen.
Unfortunately Squishee, no I won't be acclimatizing it before putting it out because it will likely be ripped off just like my container plants last year! It's very used to strong south sunlight anyway and I intend on putting it out after May 10th. I'll transplant it on a rainy day - my favorite time to put indoor plants into the garden because they make the transition and adjust so much easier.
