Hello exotic-plant-friends. I started recently with the hobby of growing palm trees from seeds, later i discovered the passion for banana trees. Right now i'm discovering this website. And it's a fantastic resource of information for musa and ensete species! There isn't any comparable forum existing right now.
I live in Belgium. I have some musa basjoos, musa cavendish and dwarf cavendish. Alsow i have a sikkimensis that i have grown myself from seed.
I'm wondering if anybody in Europe have a spare corm ( or maybe some seeds)
of a specie i don't have already? Maybe we can work something out.
Thank you very much ! :bananas_b
Welcome palmpje, You'll definitely want to check out the thread " call for European members" lots of good people and growers there. Theres a bunch here too so jump in.

Welcome palmpje, update your profile so members can see where you are from as some places have restriction on trading live plants.

Excuse me? If was used in there? I AM gonna make it flower. :D :D However I doubt it will be pure Rubra then naturally, cause I have also Sakhalin of precisely the same height and age and will get precisely the same height and age normal basjoo soon. :D So the chance of getting 3 blooms of totally different basjoos is... high. But I will do my best to pollinate manually and make as many pure 'Rubra' and 'Sakhalin' as possible. ;)

Thank you 'banana-friends' for taking the time to leave me a 'welcome'. It's quit exiting to find out that you are not the only garden-banana-crazy nut out there ( no disrespect ).
Dalmationsoap : if everything is ok know, you should be able to PM me. If not, let me know in this post.
Jack Daw : if you would have some spare corm later on, maybe we can trade a corm. In that way we would both be happy. Till that time, i may have already a pup from my musa lasiocarpa ( if that would intrest you ).
I still have to do a lot of catching up, because you guys posted a lot of interesting things in this forum. Bastards :ha: ! know i have to spend days reading all this :drum:

Just catch up with other interesting info, lasiocarpa is beauty in the garden, but I specialize in collecting edible varieties (one guy with lasicarpa lives about 2km from me :D ). That however doesn't mean, that I won't share the pups with you in the future, I will more than gladly help you out, with seeds or corms as well. Provided that my plants will grow, arghhh :D .

Thanks Jack ! that really sounds great. I will put some pictures on my profile soon. So i can show you what i'm trying to do here in this small Belgian country.
I read that you collect edible species. Well Jack, my wife is actually Dominican. Every year we go to the Dominican Republic. However i can't promise anything, it's my goal to collect some little pups there that i can propagate here later on. I still have to manage to get those in my suitcase without having troubles on the airport :0517:. But if this would work out, i would be more then happy to share them with you.

Thanks for that, I will do the same when I go somewhere abroad (I want to go to Sochi region, Russia in 2 years or so and see maybe Ante down in the subtropical Croatia, or invite him for a stay, show him the city etc...).
I also have a very good friend, an interesting man in Nicaragua (he works as technical advisor to the banana crop industry there), I do not want to strip him of money on shipping, so I would rather wait until he gets back to Slovakia for his reunion (1, 2, 3 years maybe.... maybe more), give him the tour (he studied here a long time ago), a place to sleep etc. You know, he's a friend if mine...
He wanted to send me some plants, but I think that it would be much better, if he didn't spend his money at all like this. He wants to come here, so when he has the chance, we can join reunion with nanas and friendly tours.
There are also many great people from tropics here, lorax is from Ecuador (although Canadian I think), island cassie is from Dominican republic I think...
Lots and lots of interesting people here.
Well, no more words, study the site. :D

Forgot to ask, just to list the palmpje, where are you from precisely?

I'm from West-Flanders ( Ieper to be very precise ) close to the frontier of France. We enjoy here a subtropical climat of 4 weeks :ha: with an occasional rain.
Soon i will go on holiday and enjoy the Dominican climate ( right now it's way too hot !! ). But because of work it's the only moment i can go there with my wife.
Nice to meet you, fellow Belgian friend 'Yakuza'!
Belgium forces are growing ha ha. Now we will try the same thing with some goddamned banana species. Let's hope we don't encounter any more of this artic freezing f***ing winters anymore ( -13 we had past winter some days uphere!) I'm planning to move much material inside in the coldest moment of the winter. Don't want to risk to loose my beloved nanners.

Thats an honor Jack Daw ! :goteam::02::birthdaynana:
I also positioned my location on the map. And filled in some more details in my profile. Still on the "checking out" and "learning track" here ! Somebody did a lot of work creating this forum. It's quiet extensive and well build!
If i have a little pup after my holidays ( will be back 8 august ) i will send it you.

Just one more question. What were your minimal temperatures this year? I've heard it's been bad in western Europe this year.

On my digital thermometer i had a reading of minus 14 during one cold night. On television they were talking about even minus 20 in some regions in Belgium. I lost some big musa basjoos that were very carefully protected. I had the basjoos here in perfect condition until late november. The horror came in december - februari. Only three months. This winter was very harsh for us. The worst in 20 years ( exceptional).
Hopefully we will not encounter this more due to a slow changing climat. Lets see how next winter will be.

Hiya! :woohoonaner:
Just wonder if there is anyone with a bananapup over to give away? I´m interessted of any species. I have only M. acuminata and M. dwarf cavendish if you want to trade? But they are only pups and about 20cm in height.
Hope there is any one who would like to do this??? :goteam:

Hi everybody!
I would like to grow a dwarf lady finger, but it’s very hard to obtain around here. Thus I ask if any member from the EU can send me corms or pups (or even a small plant) of dwarf lady finger. Unfortunately I’m beginner and I don’t have seeds/corms to exchange, but I can at least pay the shipping costs.
Thanks a lot! :03:

I have sow a bunch of Glaucum seeds today.
Nothing unusuall, beside the fact that seeds are originally from Croatia. So, Im hopeing to get my first real domestic banana sprouts ;).
Time will tell us and if nothing we will know if Glaucum can provide viable seeds in this climate.
Wish me luck.
