my small basjoo leaves suddenly became wilted, curled, and brown. i saw the new leaf (the one which is really curled) in the morning, it was good but in the evening it got worse like in the picture. (check gallery pictures)

is it becoz?
1. over fertilizer - i feeded 2 small laundry cup of 30-10-10 and two teaspoon o fish emulsion well dissolved in water the previous day. i also added lot of water after that to cause further dilution. i'm fertilizing in this manner every week.

2. over watering - i'm adding water every 3 or 4 days. deep watering

3. sun - temperature rised from high teens/lower 20s to high 20s for the past 3 or 4 days. the leaves were okay but it happened like this in a day.

please advise. thanks a lot.

Check for spider mites. If you find the yellowed shriveled leaf covered with "dust" or tiny webbing spray with water and treat with with insecticidal soap. I haven't seen them a problem outdoors though.

I agree mine look like that when infested with spider mites, but my cure has been to put them outside, so I'm confused.

thanks for the advice. I will go and check if there are any spider webs around the plant. The leaves changes so badly within 10 hours is making me to suspect if someone intentionally sprayed something on the plant..! I hope not.

it looks like sunburn or windburn type damage. Did you just put the plant outside?
If not, it's probably the fertilizer or someone sprayed it with something. Have you used any insecticides on it? Or did someone spray it with something like Raid?

I figured it out. its overfertilizing. i stopped fertilizing and its growing good now. produced two new leaves and shooting the third one.

a fellow member of this grp from ontario, Canada advised me not to overfertilize basjoo. the concept of feeding fertilizers every week and driving basjoo's growth doesnt really work that way in Ontario.

seems like basjoo is too sensitive for this area. i will try ensete soon (if i can germinate the seeds, which is again a bit more complicated).

Also in Brampton, I have the same problem with my Basjoo that has just put out 5 pups. The main plant is getting brown spots and drying up while the pups are just fine. Was fertelizing weekly and will see if reducing the amount will get it back on track. I have a Super Dwarf Cavendish and a Zebrina that are doing just fine at the moment.

yeah, try not to fertilize at all and check how its responding. worst case, use some organic fertilizer (fish emulsion, good dilution) once in 2 weeks. nice to know that it produced 5 pups. mine is still 2 to 3 feet tall. dont know if it will make it to 5 or 6 feet this year.

have anyone tried planting 'travellers palm' banana plant in cold hardy weather? does anyone where to get them in Ontario?

I know of seeds for travellers palm at PALM TREE SEEDS IN RETAIL PACKS FROM AROUND THE WORLD (http://www.seedman.com/palm1.htm#103). I highly doubt that this would survive unless brought inside or a greenhouse is used.
