I received mine, and got my whole family to watch it with me. It is fantastic, Dr. Nelson (Scot). I really appreciate it and am glad that someone finally took the time to make a DVD solely about Bananas. Although it is about growing bananas in Hawaii, the information is applicable to anywhere.
Again, thanks so much. It ought to be put online so more people can access it, as well as sent to large public libraries!
Jarred- have you ever considered a video-hosting portion added to this site? Just wondering...I think it would be great to have all videos in one area here for all members to access, including the Growing Bananas videos & PDFs! Might not be enough server space, but a neat suggestion at least.

Thanks, Scot, I just watched the main video and enjoyed it. Many of us in areas with climate challenges just think of Hawaii as paradise without fully recognizing all of the pest challenges there. It was great to get a good handle on what growers there have to go through to produce bananas.
I was also surprised that suckers are so large when removed (6" psuedostem or larger). "Wow" was my initial impression. I was also surprised to see that so much of the corm is trimmed off when various pests are present.
Thanks again,
Harvey

Yep you have the weather but the pests also love the climate as well. There is always some kind of drawback. I was looking at the temperatures in Lima and it rarely goes under about 60 or over 90 but the rainfall is horrible. The high months its like 8mm average. Not to mention I'm not a fan of places where there are earthquakes ;) Thats one of the things that surprises my wife is the amount of rain we get here around Houston :D Well except for this summer!

Harvey, there is of course some variability among farmers in the size of suckers used at planting. But the suckers tend to be larger than you'd expect. They really must trim them severely due to the nematodes. A well-managed banana farm in Hawaii can grow for 15 - 20 years before any knockdown and fallowing, but probably not if suckers are infested with nematodes at planting.

Thanks, Scot. I've received corms that were trimmed but just barely to the the surface or slightly below. I didn't know that this much of the corm could be trimmed off but it's obvious now that the roots originate from deep within the corm. I also hadn't thought of treating with hot water although something similar is done by some chestnut growers (a crop I grow) in areas where weevils infest the nuts.
Once a banana plot is fallowed, how many years might it be before it's planted to bananas again? Are other crops grown on the land in the meantime?
Thanks,
Harvey
Scot Nelson

Once a banana plot is fallowed, how many years might it be before it's planted to bananas again? Are other crops grown on the land in the meantime?
Harvey, the duration of fallow depends on a number of factors, including soil type, nematode species and the population sizes, and the types of weeds present (some weeds are hosts of some nematodes). Most farmers would fallow for at least 1 year, and longer if soil samples show high populations after 1 year. Most farmers who fallow bananas do not plant other crops in the fallowed areas, but those removing fields completely from banana production due to a history of nematode problems will usually plant something else. :03:

Brazil has the similar climate like Hawaii, that I can grow all the varieties in my yard in Lucianópolis, I'm also now building a business partnership with Frutas Raras and I'm building one English version of the seedlist of Frutas Raras, my friend Helton requested me, he will also ship seeds to U.S., UK and to all countries of the world.

Okay, so I watched this again the other night....and you totally get points in my book for saying 'twenty-oh-seven.' Way to be ahead of the times, Scot! I can't wait till they finally figure out that 'two-thousand_______' is not the eventual way we will be saying this. My guess is 2010 will be where we finally 'switch over.' So yeah...random props. Hope I didn't derail your thread too much.
And thanks again, Scot! I appreciate all the excellent information...so great to learn so much in such a brief time!
'Boi, you can thank the DVD narrator, Thor Wold. That is how he read my text (twenty-oh-seven), and I just let him ride with it. He's a pro. He also works up at an astronomical observatory atop Mauna Kea mountain on the Big Island, at an elevation of 13,796 ft. He works 10 days on, 6 days off. I suppose that having this view (see below) all the time mght expand one's mind a wee bit.

Ahhh, the Twenty Hundreds! I can't stand it when people say "they year" either. As if we would confuse 1989 or 2012 with...a pound of ham. Nobody said "the year" in the Nineteen Hundreds.
It's not Two Thousands, it's Twenty Hundreds! Ha ha ha ha ha.
And when they gon' get wid it keepin' the Panama and Black Sig etc from killin' all dem bananas!!???
I just sent an email. Sounds good.

A view like that, over the mountains, over the clouds, and even into the vast reaches of space...!? That's what I call "Total Vision"...! Awesome!

Hello everyone:
We are no longer able to mail the "Growing Bananas" DVDs for free to non-Hawaii residents (although we have done that sine June 2009).
After today, you should send money for postage if you do not reside in Hawaii.
However, you could also browse this thread for links to view or download the video online for free at my website (The Plant Doctor (http://www.plant-doctor.net)) or at YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (http://www.youtube.com), or to download it as a free podcast for iPhones or iPods from the iTunes store.
Thank you.

Just to help people find this on YouTube, here's a link to a post by Scot in this thread (http://www.bananas.org/f2/new-dvd-about-growing-bananas-available-8468-4.html#post83666) that has all the videos from YT posted. Hope everyone enjoys this video as much as I did and learns a lot!
Thanks again Scot!

Sincere thanks for this video. I am about to go outside and treat my garden bananas to a lot of TLC. I am thankful that here in Sydney Australia we do not appear to have some of the diesases you have mentioned, and since that is the case it would be remiss of me to neglect other things I know my plants need. The slim, curled over new leaves on one plant suggest they might have a mineral deficiency. I have never really fertilized the bananas, so now am off to correct this!
I really appreciated watching the video and shall keep the link to remind myself how to be a better banana mother!

Scot, this might probably be a good question for you. Provided that someone lives in a colder climate, such as subtropical and somehow manages to grow bananas outside without killing them, are there any chances that those illnesses you mentioned in the movie could occur? I mean, is it possible for tropical diseases and pests to survive in a climate, where the temps can get as low as 32°F several nights a year? Or do they simply die at some point?
What about viruses and everything, that can survive in the soil, such as Black Sigatoka. Can such disease spread to above mentioned subtropical region?

Jack, some plant pathogens produce survival structures that can withstand low temperatures, so it is difficult to generalize. In my opinion it is not very likely that most of the major banana pathogens from the tropics would survive prolonged exposure to the winter temperatures you mentioned. Some nematode species or viruses might be able to survive 32F.

Remember that the music in the banana video was composed by Roy "Futureman" Wooten, a member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
About 6 or 7 years ago, Roy was developing a new musical instrument. He came to see me one day about that, as he had attended a seminar I had given on a math topic. I showed him and discussed the mathematics of a musical scale based on plant growth that he used to create his instrument.

That's really, really cool. Thanks for sharing!
I wonder if it was perhaps based on the Fibonacci sequence, maybe in terms of half steps: 1/2, 1/2, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6.5? So in A it would go (I think):
A
Bb
Cb
Db
E
A

I recommended that Roy use Fibonacci differences (in hertz) between consecutive notes in the scale used for his instrument. These differences would progress from the first note (frequency value) selected for the scale.
