For those of you who are local (Texas) I just had my article on growing bananas along the Gulf Coast published in the most recent issue of Texas Gardener. I think there will be link to it on their website pretty soon. If so, I'll post it here for those interested. This article is pretty similar to the one I wrote for the first issue of Bananas Quarterly, with some minor changes.

You can probably find this mag. at Wal-Mart or other book stores. If you are into gardening in the Texas and Louisiana region, it's a great magazine. Not really trying to advocate for them, just passing along my opinion since many of us here are gardeners.

Thanks everyone! It will eventually be up, from what I'm told, at Texas Gardener -- The magazine for Texas gardeners by Texas gardeners. (http://www.texasgardener.com). At the moment, they still have up info about the May/June issue. Sometimes they lag behind a few days.
I've also recently found out that I will be shooting some gardening segments to air on one of our local TV channels. It will be on a show called "Going Green with Yolanda Green". We start taping next week and I think the first spot will air in early-mid July. If they don't turn out too goofy I'll post a link to the video here at some point.
That's great man! Definitely keep us posted.

If it isn't on news stands now it will be shortly. I just got my copy at work and they usually send out a week or so early to subscribers I think. It is the July-August issue and the words Texas Gardener are printed in purple. It has a close up of an artichoke about to open on the cover.

Good work, Brent! I had some Jehovah's Witnesses come to the door today, and one guy was from California. He wanted to know about my "banana trees," and how I could grow them in Tennessee! We ended up talking more about bananas then his original purpose, lol.

Congrats Brent!! Someday maybe I'll be watching you on HGTV and say... I got my bronze laterita from him..... well you never know!!! First a local channel and next you're nationally syndicated.
And .... oh my gosh I had Jehovah's Witnesses come to my door yesterday about a big thing going on in Indiana and the guy commented on MY bananas too!! :ha: What a coincidence as hardly anyone comes door to door out here let alone anyone that would recognize a banana plant! I enjoyed talking to them!

I hope that by mentioning bananas.org in the article as a great resource that it will drive more people to our site. Hopefully we will gain at least a few new members and hopefully get some more subscribers to the magazine. I'll be sure to plug the magazine in my banana presentation I'm giving in August at Mercer Arboretum (Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens (http://www.hcp4.net/mercer)) in Houston. Of course, bananas.org is already written into the presentation! I wonder if I could get any bananas.org stickers to give out?

For anyone local who is interested, the gardening spots I have been filming with Channel 39 should start airing this Saturday (July 11th) on Going Green with Yolanda Green. It is my understanding that the segements will air every other week. Her show normally airs at 2 p.m. on Saturday and then the re-air is Sunday at 10 a.m. Take it easy on me if it comes out too dorky.

OK- so I just got another chance to promote bananas! I had a call from a guy who has a radio program on gardening on weekends here in the Houston area. Apparently he had read my article in Texas Gardener magazine and was so impressed with all of the info that he wants me to come on his show and do an hour segment about growing bananas. I'll be sure to plug bananas.org of course! This is pretty cool how I'm getting to "educate the masses" about growing bananas. The radio station is KTRH for you locals. I'm supposed to do the interview on July 18 from 8-9 a.m.

My thanks again to Pitangadiego (hope I spelled that right) for allowing me to use some of his images from his Power Point presentation as well as others I contacted about images.

07-10-2009, 09:36 PM
Only 8x10's? I was thinking of going for the life-sized poster! Just kidding! I'm trying to take it all in stride. It's all happened pretty fast-part of it is work-related (the TV part) and part of it is from work I've done on my own, on the side (the magazine articles with TX Gardener, the Tropical Symposium). I hope no one thinks I'm bragging. I'm simply posting here in the event that anyone cares. I know if another member here were doing something similar I'd be interested in hearing about it. I just look at it as an opportunity for me to talk about two things I'm really interested in...horticulture, in general, and bananas. I'm really excited about the opportunity it affords me to educate people more about bananas and to direct people to our great site here.

Jack,
You can at least see the article if you go to Texas Gardener -- The magazine for Texas gardeners by Texas gardeners. (http://www.texasgardener.com). That willtake you to their website where you can read a couple of complimentary articles from the latest issue, including mine on growing bananas.
I should be able to post the link to the radio interview at some point, as well as links for my TV spots, once the radio and TV stations post them.

Not the one I saw. For some reason they seem to change what time they show the new episodes. This time it aired on Sat. at 10 a.m. and Sun. at 10 a.m. and it was the new one with my first segment on it. I checked yesterday on Channel 39's website, under the Going Green link but they don't have a link to the segment posted yet. It looks like they are running about 2 weeks behind.

Yeah, sorry-this whole thread has become a bit of a mess-my fault, because I've posted on a couple of different topics.
1.) My article on bananas in Texas Gardener
2.) My gardening segments on Channel 39, and now...
3.) My interview on KTRH this Sat. morning to talk about growing bananas.
I didn't mean for it to become so confusing but I didn't want to muddle up the board by posting multiple threads. There will be a new segment on "Growing Green" this weekend. For some reason they decided not to skip a weekend.
Nice article! Thanks for the link!

I'm not sure now if a new segment is going to air on "Going Green" or not. I've heard yes and I've heard no. TV is so unpredictable. If not this weekend then a new one should definitely air next weekend (the 25/26th).

I did my radio interview with Randy Lemmon on his show called "Line" yesterday morning. I was on from 8-9 a.m. on KTRH 740. We discussed bananas and took some calls to answer questions. The link will eventually be up on their website under the Garden Line link. I got in a good plug for bananas.org and our magazine. It was a pretty fun experience! I'm not sure how many people listen to his show, but considering Houston is approx. 6 million people (in the greater Houston area), it could potentially be several thousand.

Thanks, Cheryl! Glad you enjoyed the article. I have two more coming out with them at some point. One on water gardening, which is actually scheduled for the Sept/Oct issue and one on cold tolerant cacti and succulents which is tentatively scheduled for the Nov/Dec issue. Sometimes things have to be shifted around in the magazine industry depending on how space is running, so one of these articles could get bumped to a different issue. Keep an eye out, though!
