View Full Version : Identification...plz help
Hello All,
Can you help me identify this tree? We think it's a dwarf, but not sure. My husband purchased a few years ago we can't find the marker.
Thanks.

I'm not seeing any BTV. Could you guys point it out for me? It has to be very obvious, I guess, for me to recognise it.

Yes, has 2 just starting.
At first glance it gave me the impression of a Musa double (majoi)...because they do tend to remain small and with that apparent bunchy top virus. If you acquire a second sprout (bunch) from the same banana "plant" this will be it. It also has the makings of a Musa Little Prince. Regardless....you do need to be congratulated on getting a yield under a restricted environment. Also, banana plants have a tendency not to yield when suffering from bunchy top virus, so, even with that you appear to have done something spectacular.
Thanks, new to all this. My husband purchased just because it was something different. LOL This plant actually died, we forgot about it (life took over), then we noticed a sprout. So, what is bunchy top virus? By second sprout, do you mean bunch of bananas? We now have many...5 or so.

Congrats on fruiting. Getting SDC to fruit and in pot, you must be a hell of a grower and gardener. ;)

It looks like a Dwarf Cavendish, not a Super Dwarf Cavendish and likely not a Double Cavendish. The Double Cavendish is almost the exact same as the Dwarf Cavendish, it just has issues after the first time it fruits additionally the Double Cavendish is not a very common cultivar, whereas normal Dwarf Cavendish are one of the most common banana plants seen in nurseries. The reason it is the size of a Super Dwarf is because it is in a small pot and grown under less than ideal conditions. If it were a Super Dwarf, it would have wider/rounder leaves and a wider pseudostem.
Also in case there is any confusion, the plant definitely does not have bunchy top virus, those smaller leaves are just the transitional leaves that appear before flowering. The small leaves seen from bunchy top virus are slender and yellowish, the plants looks very unhealthy, whereas this plant looks fairly healthy, just dwarfed from being containerized.
Thanks Gabe, even though you have the scientific attitude as opposed to my gardeners perspective, every time I learn or have something confirmed is rewarding.
Just had an aaha moment.
