It has been in the ground for about 1 month and the new leaf that it has put out is laying flat. I have never seen any do this before and am not sure that this is normal. If any one can help I would greatly appreciate any help that I can get. Thankshttp://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=18555&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=18555&ppuser=3875)

I have had a few of my bananas do the same thing. They all grew out of it. I would be interested to know what causes it.

I actually think your "Raja Puri" there is something from the Cavendish family. Either Dw. Cavendish or High Color Mini. To my knowledge, Raja Puri does not have red blotches on its leaves. I don't think the emerging leaf is anything to worry about. I've seen some of mine do this before. It should stand up eventually.

Hey, Brent, I might be an old fart but I still can remember some things. Take a look here: http://www.bananas.org/f12/rajapuri-ice-cream-5406.html#post49603 I think of the old discussion often while still trying to confirm my mat (probably raja puri, definitely not ice cream).

Hello Shannon,
I have had a quite similar experience with Raja Puri, and nobody could hit
the reason for this happening. It could not open the leaf normally for which
reason a next leaf could not come out normally and repeating this caused
a fatal damage to the plant to die away.

Hey guys, if you go to the webe bananas site and click on "growing tips" scroll halfway down and Jon mentions that some varieties (and mentions specifically Raja Puri) are prone to choking and shows pictures. My guess is that this is a varietal trait rather than evidence of a problem.

The recent discussion of an Ae Ae with a similar problem at http://www.bananas.org/f2/aeae-new-leaf-problem-8288.html might be related. There I posted a link to Brent's old post at http://www.bananas.org/f2/leaf-damage-5017-2.html#post43543 was brought up. You might try gypsum or lime (depending on your pH) and/or a fertilizer with boron.

Too much of the major nutrients could render the others less available, I suspect. You cold just try switching to a fertilizer that has micronutrients as well. Richard has done some recent editing to the wiki on fertilizer info and there may be some info there to help you.

You got me there, Harvey. In my statement from last year I definitely stated that my RP had red blotches on the young leaves; but I can't remember that now for the life of me. I remember the post, but I don't recall seeing any blotches-maybe it's just my faulty memory. I do know that it has not exhibited any blotches on any of the larger leaves. My RP has a pup on it now that is pure green. I thought I rememberd someone on here stating that RP doesn't exhibit the red blotches, but I sure can't remember who. Maybe Jarred or Gabe could point us in the right direction on this.

My Rp's have winestains when young, then again, mine are too large to be RP imo. I hope they turn out to be some cavendish that produces large bunches. They handle the winter just fine, but are doing the same goofy leaf thing this year.

My AeAe was the one Harvey was refering to. I added lime, gypsum, and slow released fertilizer with micro-nutrients. My problem has now been corrected. The leaf no longer curves downward and opens up so that the next emerging leaf can unfold unimpeaded. I also added ground up egg shells around the base of the plant. I hope this will help you.

I have read somewhere that fertilizing causes a temporary calcium deficiency. I don't remember which nutrient is supposed to cause this mechanism to happen. Evidently, it locks the calcium up in the soil and makes it unavailable to the plant for a while, causing the emerging leaf to bend over in an upside down U shape, and not unfurl. It's mostly only happened to Manzano in my yard! A couple weeks later and the problem seems to correct itself. Maybe that has something to do with what you are witnessing here.
