View Full Version : Thousand fingers blooming!!

My thousand fingers planted 14th July last year is just starting to bloom, and the burning question is how big will the bunch be? Jarred told me that a young plant will tend to have a smaller bunch than a longer established mat - but a gal can hope - can't she? Thanks Jarred as this plant grew really well from day 1. Pics when the sun is in the right place, and there is a bit more to show. But I was bursting to tell you.
Always exciting Island Cassie. Can't wait to see pics. Hope you get a big bunch.

Very cool! I would like some pictures, someone told me 1000 fingers was the only banana that opens backwards. The male flowers first then bananas all the way down. I got to try them before they are pretty good, but the fruit is so small you have to eat about ten before you start to get full. LoL I think I could eat a few hands in one sittings.

When the first fingers appeared, they were long and skinny, but now they are into the short fat ones - didn't realise it would produce two types of fruit. The bunch is getting satisfyingly long although I doubt it will reach the ground as you can see how high it was when it bloomed.

Looking good! It almost looks like the male flowers start first on this variety. The little skinny bananas near the top is what my bunches always look like as they are finishing up and changing over the male flowers. Maybe Gabe could give us a little insight into this.

It is still growing slowly and the bunch to the tip of the bud is 5ft - with only 4ft to go to the ground! What do you think - will it make it? The fruits are so closely packed that I have to pull the old bracts free or else they stay jammed in, and with our humidity attract mould and fruit flies.

Hey Alberto - I bought it in the USA and had it couriered over from Miami, as our postal service here is useless. There might be 1000 finger plants available in Venezuela either from plant growers or botanical societies, although the quick look online that I had didn't find any. Take a picture to a local plant nursery and you might be lucky!!

The bottom two pics are from Homestead..Going Bananas...we are laughing because I took a few pictures and Don said..wait wait..let me clean the bloom up first...so we furiously cleaned all the dead flower stems..off of...a thousand tiny bananas....
The first two pics are from our yard..and it was one stout pseudostem...the bananas actually ripened on the plant..we would go out each day and peel a few tiny bananas....it did get a little longer...

The thousand fingers is slowing down and the tip of the bud is now 3ft from the ground. I don't think it will keep going much longer as all the leaves are looking brownish and tattered, probably exhausted by the effort. Someone suggested a foliar feed to help it along - what do you think? I don't think mine will start to ripen on the plant as they are all very green - the top round ones are plumping but the bottom spiral ones are tiny. I feel the end is nigh!

The first bunch of bananas I ever harvested never turned yellow on the tree. The bunch actually broke away from the tree and I found it on the floor one morning. I seperated the bananas into groups of 4-6 and placed them in boxes lined with plastic. They ripened perfectly in a few days..
That is why I suggested cutting a few of the plump ones off and seeing if they ripen. Doing this will probably assist the plant in plumping up the remaining bananas since it has less bananas to worry about. :) Im no expert though, so it's just a guess.
island cassie
11-08-2009, 11:47 AM
I see where you are coming from Mario - but I hate to mutilate the bunch as it is the first and so beautiful! I have ripened others from green when necessary and might have to do that with this bunch if the mother plant fails, but I really want to see a yellow finger so I will keep waiting. Nothing like fruit ripened on the plant!

During my usual plant patrol I noticed this - they weren't yellow at all yesterday! :woohoonaner: I think I will count them as I cut the ripe ones off the bunch - so this could take some time!! And I will wait a few more days until they are really ripe.

We should take some sort of wager on how many fruit are on there. There doesn't have to be a prize, I just think it'd be fun!

OK - if you are happy to have a contest with no prize - start now as I have not cut any fingers! As long as Jarred agrees! When do I stop counting as I can't think that they are all going to ripen -when the last finger turns yellow before the stalk turns black? Haha! we are all in unknown territory here!

Um....I'm gonna say 1623. Also, can we do 'Price is Right' rules and if you go over, you lose automatically? LOL :ha:

Well, just start the list somewhere and keep editing the post as new guesses are made. That's really all you need to know.

I had better check with Jarred as I see that the rules state that the contest must be approved, and that a prize must be announced!

Wow Cass
this is realy beautifull. How do they taste? Are these desert naners or?
Anyway, WOW :)
:woohoonaner:
Just started eating the first fruit and they are amazingly good - sweet apple with almost a touch of peach to them - pity they are only the size of an extra large peanut when peeled!!

Ante - I was afraid that they would be boring - but not so! I am amazed!
Shopgirl - I am so lucky that they grow so easily - no effort on my part needed as you say! Just want to share the fun and I don't want to imply that I an expert.
