The bigger the better. You have to judge when they will have enough roots to support themselves after separation.

For me it depends on whether i want to grow the main stem, if so i will take them off at about a foot tall so they do not sap energy from the main stem. If not then i am happy to let them grow beyond that size.

I had a basjoo in a pot and the original plant was about 30" tall and it had two pups that were each about 18" tall. I pulled up the plant and the original plant as well as both pups had a huge amount of roots. I would have lost dozens of roots if I just used a knife or shovel to separate them. Instead, I hosed off all of the soil and carefully separated them. In hindsight, I wish I had separated them sooner since there were ample roots to support the pups (probably 12" high would have been fine). See photo I posted earlier:

I don't know if it's specific to cultivars or not, but some seem to have much more roots earlier on than others. I separated some large Praying Hands pups a while back and was surprised they didn't have more roots. Based on my very limited experience with basjoo, I wonder if it just develops roots sooner.

Good luck,

Harvey

Thanks, John. I should have pointed out that the small white spot on the pup in my left hand is all that connected the pup to the mother plant. That was really surprising to me. I couldn't fit a knife to cut it without damaging several roots so I just snapped it apart with my manly hands! LOL
