I planted a basjoo, in the ground, in the spring of 2007. Got 4 little pups that summer. I covered everything up, in the fall. When I uncovered, in spring 2008, I saw that everything made it. The pups got about four feet of p-stem on them but, one day, I found the main stem broken off, just below the ground, where it started to swell for the corm. I plopped the stem in a pot. In the fall, I covered the four 2007 pups, and four more that appeared in '08, and put the pot with the stem in the cellar. In about mid April, '09 I uncovered and, again, everything made it. In May, I dug up, and potted the 3 smallest of the '07 pups, and the 4 '08 pups, leaving only the largest '07 pup, with about 4½ feet of stem. The broken stem that I had put in the pot dried up and fell over, but not before it had put out a pup, in the pot. Now, I notice the start of a new pup next to the one stem that I had left in the ground.

That pup should grow quickly now with the heat. It will be 4 feet before you know it!

The little pup is now about 8 inches high, and is joined by 4 more.
