Switched from Charter to Dish network & the dish guy took the old dish off & left it after we asked him. Is there a way to use the dish as a antenna? There is no cable or dish at Mike's shop & he wants a tv in there. Wondering if we could set dish on roof for reception on tv. Will it work? I have a converter box for the tv.
Or, what else can we use it for?

No, it will not work as a regular tv antenna - best thing is to put it in craigslist for a few bucks and sell it - You would be supprised @ the people that will glady pay $10-$15 for a used dish.

Sorry to hear I can't use it for antenna. Why would anyone pay $15-20.00 for one??
Birdbath? COOL!

People buy them for FTA use. Free-to-air - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free-to-air)

If they use them for FTA use, why can't I? Or do I have to be a sattelite genious?

You need to purchase a receiver.

Thanks Bigdawg. This is all so interesting. More reading to do.
I think the dish I have might be too small. Somewhere it said minimum 30 inch dish & mine is less than that so I guess I can't use it for FTA huh?
They sell dishes at Viewsat and they are bigger.
Sounds like you may have one...how many channels do you get? What kind?

My brother is into the FTA - I helped him set it up. He is using a regular Dishnet dish and the Viewsat ultra receiver. He gets at about 200 channels.

Uh oh, I feel another hobby coming on :)

I have so many myself. I could spend way more time and money on just one or two, instead of spreading it out like I do now. I just can't force myself to drop any of them. LOL

Bananas - at least trying to grow bananas - LOL
R/C stadium trucks - 1/10 nitro - 50mph
Golf cart - BIG - LIFTED - FAST - 25 mph
Fishing
Hunting
Trucks - I had 3 project trucks at once - too much
Computers - I have 5
Call of Duty - PC versions 1, 4, and 5 - Play the sniper servers
Nascar Collectables - I have a room full of this stuff

No way I can imagine ever leaving any of these things LOL

You can't have too many hobbies! I feel sorry for ppl who have none. When they retire it seems they are dead within a year. 25 mph golf cart - wow:)
Your brother has a smaller dish like Mike has & it works?
I also (at my house) quit dish network & have a digital tv & 2 converter boxes. I, for some reason, have a bigger dish on my roof. So, I could connect those cables to the receiver? I don't know how to aim a dish so I'll just leave it where it is(?)
Can I keep picking your brain?
I'd like to post a pic (later) of a 3x4 multiswitch that maybe you could tell me if I need it. Saw them for sale on the viewsat site.

...My hobbies

Breeding angel fish
cooking/baking
sewing
knitting
remodeling/home improvements
summer gardening
arts & crafts - making things (I made copper sculptured sprinklers for 7 years)
over 140 potted plants inside in winter
Fishing (love it!)
making wine
drinking vodka LOL
and now - playing with my sat dishes :)

Hey Patty, I'd love to see your Angels. I had a marine/reef maintenance business for about 5 years. Only have one 20 long freshwater now )I use it to winter my non-hardy pond fish and plants), but love to still appreciate the fish! Also, I have Dish network. Why'd you drop them? My only complaint with them is that they won't carry the MLB Network nor my local sports network in HD, only SD. Otherwise I'm addicted to my DVR..lol.

I only bred angels for 2-3 yrs & sold the last mating pair. It was interesting but got to be too much work & really no $$ made. I sold to fish & pet shops.
DISH...I talked Mike into getting it last Feb. (why we have the extra dish). I ordered it thru a special with free HBO etc for 3 months, I think he was s'posed to get free DVR (what IS that btw??). I had to call for the free channels & we never got free DVR. He has the 200 channel one & I had the 100 channels for over 4 years. They took channels off during that time (like True TV) & raised the price. Mike pays about $53.00 for his & I went up to $41.00 for my 100. I called & had them take local channels off (extra $5.00) so then it was 36.00. I just told them I'm fed up with paying that much for JUNK. I don't watch sports, cartoons or infamercials...there's nothing to watch. I have more local channels now & always something to watch w/ my converter box.
You should complain & tell them you want to quit. When I did, you should see the deals they offered me! They would give me my local channels & True tv for the same price.
They called twice now offering all kinds of deal cuz they want me back LOL. I said too late & hung up. Tell them you will quit cuz you can't get --- channels & I'll bet they will give them to you!!! I'm not kidding!! You have the 200?

Patty-
I have the 250 plus local HD and HBO and Max. The DVR is great; I am now totally addicted to it. I can pause live tv, record anything on the DVR hard drive, both HD and SD. It serves 2 TVs, although only one in HD. I never watch commercials anymore. As a matter of fact, when I do watch live tv, I'm always surprised that the remote doesn't wisk me forward. Then I realize...damn, this isn't on the DVR. I have 4 TVs on the dish, and one that I'll have to get a converter for (it's old and down in the rec room). I also am getting a HD tv tuner for my computer so I can watch HD on it.
I've contacted DISH many times, but the CEO on a Charlie Chat said they felt that they have enough baseball already and the cost to them was too high. Same with the local sports channel (MASN) which we have in SD but not in HD. I think they're immune to my e-mails, calls and threats lol. Plus I love the picture and sound, and the channel selection in HD.

Patty and Howie (See, Howie, this is another thread that is ending up having nothing to do with the original title)
TV - Do neither of you have FiOS available in your areas?

Angel fish - I think of the angel fish that bred, accidentally, for me, and the thousands that we produced.

What is FiOS?? I feel like a dummy - not knowing what a dvr is, or gold / platinum HD.
John, I don't think this is off topic. I originally wanted to know if I could use my old dish for tv reception and now it could be another hobby LOL, hence - hobbies :)
I took the eggs out or other fish would eat them. All fish will eat anything that moves. My goldfish bred in my pond but babies stayed in plants & a lot survived.
Didn't get around to ordering that receiver but it would be nice to get 200 free channels!

Patty - I don't have time to talk about everything now, but will post again in the morning, about the Angels.

As far as FiOS goes, it is Verizon's Fiberoptic service. Unlimited phone, anywhere in US , really fast computer, and crystal clear TV. ( and you can talk on the phone, & work on the puter, at the same time.

I used to have a pair of veil marbles that bred all the time but always ate the young immediatley. Shame they were beauties.

John, actually I have FIOS for both phone and internet, and love it. But I already have DISH and like it (except as noted). Plus I still have a financial commitment to them. One of my brothers has FIOS TV and with his Pioneer plasma (60") it's a gorgeous picture. Bob et al, I had tried breeding clownfish, and succeeded, but it was more labor intensive than you'd believe. And talking about TV isn't thread wrecking, John, but I'll give you the fish. Hey, Tog would approve!

I bred Marbles & silver veils. I bought 5 small fish - 3 marbles & 2 s veils & got 2 mating pairs.
---speaking of tv's /electronics, we are in the midst of huge thunder storm -explosions everywhere. One loud BANG & all the power went out but only for 1-2 minutes. Streets are flooded. I think spring is finally here!

Back to Dish network. They sent a box w/ shipping label to pack the box & remotes. Directions say to also pack the shroud (the thing in front of dish aimed at it), and the switch. They expect me to climb on my roof to remove them!!!! Yet, they don't want the dish. If I don't pack all, they will charge $150.00!!! I NEVER heard of this. Mike switched from charter & he only had to return the box & remotes.
Did anyone have to do this after you stopped satellite service?? There was nothing in small print saying I had to do this. I am going to complain & tell them to come & get it. And, they are giving me one month to ship. I am P O'd

Yeah, the "take it down thing" is a common complaint on the boards that discuss satellite TV issues. I think you have no choice. And keep proof that you shipped the stuff back.

But if I told you my Verizon DSL story you'd be amazed at their incompetence too. Bottom line -- after a few weeks of Verizon unable to hook us up (yet billing us for it!) we ended up getting internet via the cable company ... without cable TV since we watch so little TV it wasn't worth it. (No FiOS here yet, but Dad has it.) What a world!

I second the Craig's List idea for the dish itself. There are people who might pay a few $. Besides those already mentioned, amateur radio (ham) folks who play in certain frequencies come to mind. If FiOS & DVRs are news to you, you'd really trip to find out that some people talk to each other on opposite sides of Earth by reflecting their signals off the moon.

Patty in Wisc
07-01-2009, 10:39 PM
'Signals off the moon'??! Wow, I'm way behind. I look up at my roof dish & freak...it's a steep pitch. I'll have to climb there from ladder & hang on to the dish & hope it doesn't come loose while I unscrew the crap. I should let them fall to the ground & hope stuff inside breaks for them LOL. If no one hears from me for awhile, Pat-went-splat! (Mike is afraid of heights)
Ahh, DSL. I had dial up for the longest time (cheaper). All of a sudden, AT&T went from $11.00 to $24.00. I called & they said DSL only costs $16.00 & they raised the price of dial up to discourage it. So, I got DSL & set it up, & 5 months later they raised my bill to $21.00. I called 4 times in last yr & get a bimbo that can't speak English, who then transfers me to sprviser & cuts me off - EVERY time! I got same DSL service for Mike's house & he pays $16.00. I hate these ppl.

I got brave today & took parts off the dish on roof. 1st I set up a ladder but decided to climb out of attic window. When I opened the windows, 2 beehives/nests fell so I shut the windows & got hornet/wasp spray. Taken after I took the long arm off & parts they want back. Where the dish is, roof is much steeper so I walked on the less steep part - still scary.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y202/Patty_in_Wisc/dish5.jpg

I unscrewed the top of the big box thingy on the kitchen floor & when I took it off, a bees nest fell out & a big one was still inside. Bees were crawling out & I'm very allergic to stings so I had the spray nearby & sprayed the one on floor & ran the rest outside & sprayed the nest still inside the box. Whew! The whole thing w/arm is 2 1/2 ft long - bigger than average ones.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y202/Patty_in_Wisc/Dish.jpg
That's the cover I unscrewed off next to it, & the switch there.

The nest inside is 6 inches X 3 inches high, wrapped around something.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y202/Patty_in_Wisc/dish3.jpg
Glad I didn't take it apart on the roof or I woulda got stung and/or fell off the roof & be in a hospital now. I hate dish network! I'm sending it all back with the beehive in it!!:ha::ha::ha:

Patty, didn't you just post a pic with a broken arm? Seems to me you should use some charm ( a case of beer and a barbeque always works) and get "the boys" to do it.
