Just a head's up for those interested in either buying a pup or just fascinated with the demand for these things - Jeff has listed his first pup on eBay for the year. I visited him the other day and he told me he had a waiting list from last year and had sold some to those to satisfy those and this is the first extra he's had to list on eBay. Jeff's listing describes the history and background of the banana to the best of his knowledge.

J, because they have had a following for a number of years and a reputation of being reliable producers in some areas which find it challenging to produce bananas (fruits).
Part of the reputation is just from the price people pay for this selection. In 2007 there were a few auctions that went for less than $50 but in 2008 everything went considerably higher than that. I believe at least two pups were sold for about $150 in 2008!
Best wishes and good luck to hatfam!

Just under $15, I had to modify a USPS tube a little (lots of packing tape).

The last one sold by Tophersmith here recently went for more than the one Jeff Earl was selling at the same time. There aren't many secrets here at the org! :ha:

If the winner is a member here, it could be Zero10. The winner's exact name is withheld for privacy reasons, though it's listed as "Z****1". You can see Harvey's name on the list of bidders.

It seems that the cryptic letters/numbers eBay assigns to the bidder history often has nothing to do with the users ID. I sometimes have a friend tell me they've bid on something and I can't tell it's them unless they tell me. Pete and I were once bidding against one another on an alocasia. I had sent him an e-mail telling him I was bidding on it but he didn't read the e-mail until I had bought it.
I often bid on Jeff's Cal Gold pups just in case the go cheap enough. I'd rather pay $25 for another Veinte Cohol than the $36 I bid on that last California Gold, though! :ha:
I didn't win it but got a second chance offer (at a high price) that I jumped on. One of the members here has a pup we're trading for so by the end of season I'll have 3. If they bear fruit it will be (unoficially) "Jersey Platinum".

I just had the same thing happen to me today. I lost the auction I was bidding on but was offered a second chance offer for another pup, even though his auction said this was the last one. Someone on here today me he would do that so I thought I would see and he did. I am sure that he or someone he knows drives the price UP, and then when you lose he offers you a pup for your high bid you made but lost with. Pretty lame and devious. I have half a mind to alert ebay on the guy and have him investigated.

I know Jeff and your claim of shill bidding is unwarrranted. I bid on one of his pups last year since the price was low at the time even though I already have a mat of CG (would have given it to family). I told Jeff I had bid and Jeff wrote me and told me that my bid wasn't needed to drive the price up. I don't think Jeff has edited his auction description for a couple of years but he should get that fixed but there sure isn't anything for eBay to be investigating.

I made an observation. and that's ok.
and like you said if it's unwarranted, he's got nothing to worry about right? My bad if I'm offending you but I did make an observations that someone else told me might happen, and it did.
Just an observation.
And if like you said he hasn't changed his ebay listing maybe you could tell him.
Thanks...

Ok I guess I am a little irked that you are saying I am making out right accusations or derogatory comments.
First I didn't know this man was a member. So Sorry Jeff if you see this.
But look at what I saw, ok, just for a minute.
Listing says last one. The someone else starts bidding on it, and I bid it up too but I stop.
It gets sold to someone else, BUT I get a second chance offer, WHICH someone else on this board told me would happen. A second change offer to sell to me another pup at my high bid, after the listing says it was the last one for the season.
Would that look fishy to you???
and as I said it was an OBSERVATION, which I was told would happen. And it did.
I thought I would share as someone else had the same experience. That's all.
and I didn't even know what it was called, but you knew and told me it's called shill bidding. Thanks for letting me know, now I know what it's called.
I wasn't making an outright accusation, just an OBSERVATION, that I shared.
Again sorry if I hurt someones feeling or pissed off a moderator who happens to be his friend.
JUST AN OBSERVATION.
I mean if YOU saw this wouldn't you think it's fishy and post about it???? If you didn't know the guy???
That's all...

Your comments were stronger than just making an observation.
I am sure that he or someone he knows drives the price UP, and then when you lose he offers you a pup for your high bid you made but lost with. Pretty lame and devious. I have half a mind to alert ebay on the guy and have him investigated.
You stated you are sure he was shill bidding, a violation of eBay rules. Yet you say now you weren't making an outright accusation. Maybe you worded it stronger initially than you meant. Then, when I explain that what you stated was happening with shill bidding wasn't happening, you make a comment that seems to indicate you still think he has done it and give a smirk smiley.
Is it odd that the auction says he only has one but then he offers a second chance? Sure, but I already wrote that he just hasn't bothered to edit his auction. Sometimes his auctions have said "this is the only one I have for now." As I recall, a couple of years ago someone (not a member here) got a second chance offer of something like $181 and they took it. Some buyers are downright silly, IMO. Still, it shouldn't have come as much of a surprise to you since Bob said it happened to him back in 2009.
Jeff is a casual friend and my comments here are not influenced by that except for how that has helped me know what has gone on. We correspond via email maybe 5-10 years ago and have met in person twice. We mostly chat about things other than bananas such as miracle fruit, papaya, and fishing.
In your location you probably should be making choices other than CG anyways since you don't really need to be that concerned about hardiness.

Larry , I can assure you that everything on my part is fair and square.
There is absolutly no " Shill bidding" on my part.
Come on I sell very few banana pups on ebay... hense there is little money to gain anyway.
If you'll note on my listing....
This is a fat pup. I was blessed with a few more pups this summer .
Next spring I may have a couple more pups for now this is the last one.
Once that the price went up to certain price ....I ( rightfully so ) decided to offer you one of the "few more pups". You took me up on the second chance offer. If you in anyway want to change your mind about this, contact me via ebay in the next 48 hours and I will refund your money no questions asked.
Harvey... Thanks for watching my back !

I think if you check your email, you'll see an apology. Before you wrote this.
But yes you state "Next spring I may have a couple more pups for now this is the last one." which is why it looked fishy to me, when you state you have one left and then I lose but I get a second chance at another one. Just looked fishy.
Good lookin out Harv!

You have to see things from my angle.
These plants put out very few pups in the spring. Once they fruit , then sometimes I get a few more pups midsummer, but I have no way to know how many..
I dont know how many and most always I replant this time of the year.
Just take my offer as a fair offer.
It could be worse.
One year I had only 3 pups to sell.... and 2 went to Alaska
( for a greenhouse) and sold for $210 each! ( crazy! )
BTW... I have photos of the Alaska fruit! ( green house 6 mo of the year)
