Hi. I'm new, probably going to be a bit of a slowpoke about responding (because that's just how I am with forums :o ) but I've been interested in growing bananas for a couple of years. I've lived in and around the Tucson area for about 5 years now and have had moderate success but never had a banana flower.

Here's a picture of the bananas I was container growing in my old yard a couple years ago. Just a little something to share.

Welcome!

Have you always kept your bananas in pots? They'll usually grow more vigorously if you plant them in the ground. Unless it just gets too hot there in the summer, you should be able to fruit bananas there since your growing season is longer than mine.

I had those in pots because I was a renter in that house at the time and had no option but to container grow.

I also container grow now because our dirt is clay, it's a pain to dig (I'm talking 3 hours to dig an appropriate size hole; it took me that long when I planted a lemon tree a few weeks ago.

IF anyone has any questions about what varieties those are, the one on the left is a super dwarf Cavendish, and the one on the right is an unnamed Thai variety I found at a local landscaping company that opens its nursery to the public. They said someone in their family had gone to thailand and brought the corm back, but didn't know what sort of banana it was... I wish I had kept it alive, I would have loved to have seen what sort of fruit (edible or inedible) it would have made.

thanks for the vote of confidence in the forum cone, it really looks like an active forum, all about bananas - my favorite plant! I'm excited to have found it.

And lorax, thanks, don't often get compliments on it. I like yours too. That book was awesome :D

Hi botulismo,

Welcome aboard. I too live in Tucson. I started growing several banana varieties indoors this winter and have moved them outside. Most are in 25 gallon containers. Here is a WebCam view of some of the bananas
