I live in Westchester Co. NY and have tried growing Cold Hardy guys for a while without much success. Bought some online from merchants down in Fla and they never survived. Last year drove by a neighborhood nursery in Queens NY and the had two pots about ready to be tossed out. Each pot had about 5 plants in them that were on average 4 feet. Planted them last summer and they did OK...they did not seem very happy with the transplant process. But about a month ago I go 7 pups from where I planted one pot and 2 pups from the second pot.
Now I have what appears to be bug bites all over the leaves with brown areas where the leaves appear to have been chewed!!!!
HELP!!!

welcome! pics would help alot. it could be catapillers, or june bugs. i think the weather is a month behind. we had a threat of frost here 2 nights ago and at the end of may. so keeping that in mind, that means the bug population will be a month behind as well. post pics and maybe someone out here in nana land will know.

Howdy jfz. I lived in Ossining for decades. Sorry to say I never tried growing any bananas there, especially Basjoo, the hardiest type. Welcome. Where in the county are you? Look forward to seeing your pix.

Without some pics it is somewhat hard to verify the problem. It could range from spider mites, to caterpillars to wind damage or many other things.

Thanks for the welcome! I have PM'd you because I have taken pictures of the plants and can't figure out how to post them. I would like to forward them to your email and have you post them for me.

To me it looks like caterpillars, especially if the damage happens in short periods of time. If it does this over long period like 1 week to 10 days, I would say spider mites.

Thanks Shaggy.
What should I do about it?

Try going out after dark . There was something eating my boysenberries, went out with a flashlight an sure enough cutworms. There was no sign of them during the day.

Those things look pretty small, and close to the ground. I don't know, but would slugs bother bananas?

Thanks guys! Got down on all four (had to take 2 alleves first) and started digging around and found a bunch of grub like critters. Could these be the culprits? If they are what can I do about them without hurting my earthworm buddies?
