Sorry, but nothing to give/trade or anything right now. My list is in my profile and it's pretty in time based. Once I have some free naners, I will put the amount of free offshots into the brackets behind it, so that everyone can see.
Possibly sometime midsummer I might have Musa 'Pahari Kela' offshots available to give away, but it highly depends from the circumstances... how many of the plants survive the shipping (they already are in the soil so we will see), how many offshots do they make...
To save space, I will always update this thread via EDIT button.
So here's what I have right now
Musa 'Dwarf Brazilian' (as of 19.May, gift from Marcel)- only about 10cm high offshot
FREE PLANTS: (0)
Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish'- this one is only 30cm high
FREE PLANTS: (0)
Musa 'Pahari Kela' (as of 21.May, gift from Dr. Parmar)- five corms in the soil, we will see, how many of them will make it eventually
FREE PLANTS: (0)
Musa 'Raja Puri' (as of 19.May, gift from Marcel)- about 5cm offshot
FREE PLANTS: (0)
Musa 'Sicily' - Orinoco variant (to come in summer 2009, trade with Emanuel)- this depends, when Emanuel says he has a free pup (or 2) we can trade
FREE PLANTS: (0)
Musa 'Super Dwarf Cavendish'- I have 4 juveniles that make about 1 offshot a month
FREE PLANTS: (2 available - 4 to 5 leaves, plants about 8cm high)
By the end of the week I will know when I will have also:
Musa 'Grand Nain'
Musa 'Daijao'
By the end of the month I will know about:
Musa 'Dwarf Red'
Musa 'French Plantain' (x paradisiaca)
Some red fruiting musa
By the end of the summer:
Double (Mahoi)
and some others ;)
GUYS, PLEASE MAKE LISTS LIKE THIS ONE, SO THAT WE KNOW WHAT THERE IS...

I know of no such person and it might be a little tricky. Why not use services of our European friends? They have all the stuff. The tricky part is to find them.
I don't know what you mean by corn. Is that supposed to be a seed (from German Korn) or a corm, underground part of the plant?
It depends...

European is according to my definition anyone who lives in a geographical land as described by thousand years of history, stretching from Portugal to Istanbul and Ural, from Cyprus to southernmost parts of Norway. The fact, that you are not in EU doesn't make you a third world country... :D There are many cons to being in EU as well. ;) Import rules for example... :D
sorry im mean corm of your new banana hehe
Corms only hardly, but the whole plants can be bought from various people/shops in the Europe, they can be traded for with other members and of course imported, such as my PK. Seeing as it is, I think I might have been too lucky with those Pahari Kela... :D I'll make as many offshots as possible for the next year. Now, they are resting in the ground. ;)

Talking and discussing is fine, but talking politics, ethnical differences, religion, warfare... isn't. It never leads to anything good and even worse, statements can be misinterpreted, when you don't hear the intonation (such as my spa comment in Joachim's thread).
Then the differences occur and we all are slowly getting more and more distant.
And I would prefer for us to be friends, nourish on what we have in common, share what we want to teach others and learn, what others want to teach us.
Besides, I just saw your beautiful Monkey Fingers banana, YAKUZA, nice one. But you know it's a large plant, right? I think there won't be any room for pup development, 'course I might be wrong as well, just occured to me. :D I think it's too close to the wall, Musa 'Monkey Fingers' can be as high as 6 meters according to Agri-Starts.

Yep, agreed, but I don't want them to become something bad, if you know what I mean.
I hate the nights in here. Day max temperatures: 29°C, Night Low: 13°C. Bananas go dormant during the night. :( And Cavnedishes take slight damage. :( But still, they put always larger and larger leaves out, hurray!

Well I can't say I would like 35°C the whole day, but definitely more than 13°C in the night. :D But i must admit, that it's quite refreshing. And maybe it will do good to bananas, that they stop their cycle for the night and give it a rest. :D
My Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish' put its first red spot leaf, so it means it's juvenile now. One more reason to celebrate... Pups might be soon. ;)

2,5 meters stem, 3 meter with the top leaf.
The leaves are probably coming out the same direction, because there's a wal behind them and so they hae no light from that part. My Musa 'Super Dwarf Cavendish' was doing that too, although with it's slow growth it was no problem. :D
Looking forward to pups already. :D I wonder, how tall they are before the 5 leaf. 1,5 meters? :D That will be a tough one. But beautiful plants with incredible raceme of fruit Musa 'Monkey Finger' is (this sounded like Yoda from Star Wars). Hope you will get some fruit the next year.
By the way, if you want the plant to pup a lot, it should be in a confined space, so a small pot, close to the wall, close to roads is ideal. ;)
Like you have it. Where did you buy Musa 'Monkey Fingers' by the way? And the Musa 'Daijao'? Where do you have it from? I bought my Daijao from Netherlands.

My vote to Williams hyb.
Looks like safest cultivar to me.
:woohoonaner:
On the contrary, Ante, it's the least safest of all that are in offer. It's so closely related to Cavendish (and so tasty therefore), tha it has quite high demands. Also, it has difficulties to survive even light frosts of -1°C, when it supposedly dies out in 75% of the cases. It's yields are said to be incredible though, quite large bunches, excellent fruit, and of course, shorter statue.
Musa 'William's Hybrid' (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/banana/msg0616064914566.html)
Saba, on the contrary, is large, robust banana that has higher yields of fruit supposedly with lesser quality, it's better for cooking, as the fruit is supposedly very heavy.
Saba is also much hardier and it's one of the most ideal cultivars to your area. ;)

Agreed, but Saba is robust as well. And it also grows in the regions, where hurricanes and floods are a matter of 2 or 3 years...
But it's large, that's true. I like Banana plants to the height of maybe 3,5 metre, not more. Double my height... :D
Why don't you want to grow naners for food? You have quite a good conditions in your climate, it would be shame not to use them... :D I started collecting edible cultivars, when I ate the first Cavendish grow in Slovakia. Incomparable t the grocery food. Perfect, sweet, tasty. Maybe a little bit small, but that was from SDC, so it couldn't have been large... :D

If I lived in Makarska riviera in another life, I would deffinitely own a large citrus and banana farm... :D But since I'm living in Central Europe, I love our traditional plants and take the bananas as an option, to give Slovak farmers something, that will liberate them from Tesco bananas.
This Pahari Kela might be the perfect one, with it's requirements, it's not very much unlike tomatoes, which grow perfectly in here, so in a smaller scale, this could be something new to my region. And if the plants live and fruit here, I will spread it to the whole region...

I hope that you aren't one of the bosses in the field. Here in Slovakia (and possibly everywhere else), to demonstrate to the underlings, the boss must touch high voltage trafo to prove, that it's been disabled. There are cases, when it wasn't and we all know what happened then... :(
I once got 700V in a practical lesson, my tutors fault, he lost his license, he told me to touch it as a punishment for defying his authority. I didn't know where I was, once they switched it off. Few miliseconds caused me a week of headache and minor burns on the cuticles (soft finger tissue).
Considering, that I play accordion, that was terrible. For 3 months I couldn't touch my instrument, any touch with it's material was painful.
Uf, never again. :D
But from that moment, I have respect to tutors. And their electricity... :D

Actually, Slovaks who work as truck drivers are something terrible. They are literally pirates on the wheels back in our speedways.

I just remember this funny story, that there were some Italians in the city and they had an engine problem. And since they couldn't speak English well (and most Slovaks do not speak English well either), only a little German, my brother repaired their car in the street... :D
You should have seen their faces, a guy out of nowhere just repaired their car, said goodbye and went away. They wanted to give him money, but he refused.
And he said precisely, what you wrote:

Jack, are you going to plant them out in a heated green house?
I have tried to grow musa williams, cardaba (also a philippine cultivar like saba, and very similar, but a bit smaller), mahoi, thousend fingers, ice cream and many others. But The only way to have fruits in our clime is to grow them in a heated greenhouse or in pots. And for that they need to be dwarfs. Bananas like saba reach very huge dimensions.
They need a green house at least 8 - 10 Meters high!
Even a williams hybrid needs 4 - 5 Meters included the leaves!
I think rajapuri, dwarf brazilian, dwarf orinoco are some of the hardiest dwarfs that are not too big for to keep in pots.
Here are two pictures of a saba in the Philippines. It is in the province of my wife.
They are big enough that you can climb on it!

Well, I thought a lot about potting, that's what I have most of my Dwarf variants for.
But here's my new theory (to be tested this winter and next spring). According to my experience (and that of others as well), Dwarf cultivars (or any growing to 2.3m) can be stored in pots and fruit large bunches in 100 L pots. The problem there is is with the pots themselves, because potted plants grow much slower than those in the soil.
A combination of potting and free land growing might be necessary.
So here's the theory.
Based on what I have read in Frank's post about overwintering in zone 7a (http://www.bananas.org/f15/time-put-bananas-sleep-winter-310.html), I'm positive that I could extend the period for their growth by another month in my climate (from late March/early April to early November or so), giving them temperatures of maybe 16 degrees.
And I have a smaller greenhouse, that is effective in the spring.
My intention is to do it like this:
Winter/Spring: The spring comes here a little later than it does in say Mediterranean region, but this can be efficiently compensated by that greenhouse I mentioned before. Not only, that it can effectively extend the growth period, but also could possibly eliminate the danger of sudden late frosts that tend to destroy lots of the harvest sometimes. Plants would be potted and thus could start growing.
Than in late April or early May the plants would (in full growth) go into the garden and soil (special large pots might be necessary, I even cosider creating special wooden boxes or making special extra large ceramic pots, because the plant that has grown freely once will never want to go to small pot again. Other alternative is to use polyplastic root materials, that will be wrapped all over the roots, hold the soil, bet let the water in and out - just like those you can see, when you buy young trees).
Sumer and Autumn: The first problem comes with last October or early November days, as the first freeze could occur anytime. Therefore I will move the plants to the greenhouse and there, under controlled conditions I will lower the temperatures to make them dormant. Dormant plants will be stored in the garage.
The key factor is, that the plant's adult height mustn't be more than 3,5 to 4 meters. It would become really difficult to work with. So Saba is out of the question for that matter (although I might try my theory with larger pieces too).
I also carefully choose the cultivars, they must be in the level of superb cold hardiness and have height to certain levels. So far, according to papers, this could be done with about 30 to 40 different cultivars.
I will try something out and by the time of winter, the plan will be complete.
I will also share my progress with you. :D
The only problem that I haven't quite figured out is, what if the plant starts blooming too late? The whole extraction and overwintering procedure will get delicate and must be done precisely.

Jack,
I have always been reading Franks posts about his winter storage. In fact it was my motivation to store them bare rooted in the cool basement through winter. Just like many american banana lovers do, where they have warm weather for 7 or 8 month and then a not so cold winter with frosty nights for the rest of the year.
I have found out that the growth in our clime is not comparable with the growth in the states. Our average temperature in the growing season, is never as high as in the states, which pushes bananas into fast growth.
Here is already august when the ground has warmed up to the temperature the bananas like!
In the states that happens in June!
The only exception was 2003. Then my garden looked like a jungle already in the middle of July.
The other and maybe the main reason that it takes so long for the bananas to get going is, the perma frost and cold average winter temperature, causes a very long time to warm up the soil.
All in all, the bananas can not make enough strength in summer to get through the dark, cold and long winter time.
But,.... Never give up!!!
Me personally cut down the amount of different cultivars. I planted a dwarf brazilian and a dwarf orinoco out in my garden in iron baskets, they are easy to take out without disturbing the roots too much. Beside them I have a musa sp. yangtse that I also put in the ground to over winter like musa basjoo.

Interesting. I live in the lowland, the temperatures are extreme here (for the region), also, I get very little rain, that could cool the soil. My region also belongs to a very distinct part of Central Europe, because there are incredibly large natural water reservoirs and they do keep the warmth well (up to +6°C in the winter, when compared to the rest of the Slovakia).
It is also the fact, that typical crops of USA in the zone 7 (corn...) grow here like weed, the problem usually is to get rid of them, not to grow them. :D
I think the soil temperatures in Switzerland might be a result of surrounding mountain system. The rocks (microclimate element) usually heat up slowly, but then they remain hot for a longer period. However, the water is much better heat leader.
These are some of my hopes and estimates, that the bananas will like it here quite a lot (based on seeing what grows in USA and here). Well, I will see, but thanks for the warning. I will make it so, that even if some bananas do not survive the winter in the storage, I'll have enough pups to keep on going. You might have just as well saved me another year of searching, thanks. :D

As I wrote Kalabrian today: I hate this heat. I just came too suddenly, people didn't get chance to accomodate to it. Sad. I hope there will not be such cases in Slovakia, last year we had about 1600 dehydrated people in hospital a summer. People are getting less cautius. They swim too much, sunbath too much... It's dangerous as well... :(
We hit 32°C today. Yuk. Not even a slow breeze to make you feel better. All the plants went dormant today...
Today, I poured in my garden more than 2000 litres of water, it practically ran the better part of the day. Lucky me, there's so much of it below me, that it was for free. :D

today was our hottest ever measured day in May, with 35°C!!!
At my house I had 32°C yesterday and today.
The same what you are saying happens in Ticino, the southern canton of Switzerland. There it is warmer than in northern Italy, because of the lakes!
Maybe similar to Croatia, or other regions along the northern mediterranean cost.
Temperatures fall only rarely below zero. No subzero days! The coldest nights are usually around -5°C, but not even every year. And that is only two hours from my place.

Anyways, early news: Apples are starting to get really big. Harvest in June? July? Ante, you are invited for apple pie (štrúdľa) and of course "some with apple made baked bread like thing" (žemľovka). Actually, you all are invited... :D

I will see, my faith in the plant world doesn't allow me to draw back. :D I simply feel the urge to do it... :D I must make them grow...
This is what I hate about my lowland. The temperatures in winter are steady somewhere at -7°C the whole winter and then suddenly every winter a cold front comes just for a week or less and we drop to -13°C for one night and then go back slowly. I hate the cold fronts.

Marcel, so it only just occured to me, could you please give us (zone 8 and lower) some advice as to what to do with overwintering? You must have tried a lot... To a certain level (and height) it shouldn't be a problem, but you mentioned difficulties with overwintering (which I kinda counted on, so...).
I don't understand, because I was talking to some guys from Ukraine about it today and they said it's no problem in their country. Neither is it in the Netherlands, Czech rep., even Scandinavian countries... And if it's not problem there, how could it have been a problem in you country, which is significantly warmer in certain regions?
Just curious, wanna make sure, that I do all the necessary things in the October.
I know now that winter potting is one way to do this. What about other ways. Have you experimented with Frank's technique or was it just a one go and hit try?
The tallest bananas I have will be something about 3,5m high (p-stem + leaves - Pahari Kela) and the room in the greenhouse is just up to 1,8m or so... But the Pahari Kela should be special in liking these lowered temperatures... even the maximum day temperatures are best below 34°C to 35°C.
Could you describe the soil warming up and the issues in Sw. more in detail? Thanks.

What kind of bananas are your friends growing in those countries? And how do they store them in winter?
Potting up works well as long as you have a bright place to store them. Unfortunatly, I don't have. :(
My experience with bare root worked good with d.orinoco and d.brazilian, but it takes a certain time to get back into growth again. And because of the little growth they only get in our clime, it was waking them too much after one or two winters.
All the other kinds where rotting!
There was musa misi luki(beautiful plant and fast growing, but becoming tall), FHIA-18( one of my favorit and alo fast growing),williams hybrid, mahoi, dwarf frensh plantain, ice cream, thousend fingers, cardaba, and two or three others from which I don't remember the names.

Of all the edibles, I would say William's Hybrid, Grand Nain, Bordelon, Velutina Pink, Orinoco (large).
It seemed to work fine for them.
Also, I know people in Germany, who oerwinter in this fashion also Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelli' and other... no problem so far...

Yes, let me hear your opinion.
The first time I over wintered bare rooted I lost many types because the temperature was maybe too long between 0 and 5 degrees, but never below.
The only one that survived without problems was musa sikkimensis.
They usually rot from the inside out just above the corm.

Well, Marcel, I basically want to adapt some of the technologies our (Slovak) nurseries do, when they want to impress the buyer in spring with already nicely bloomig plants with quite a strong growth.
The small trees (up to 2,5 meters) are put out of the soil for winter and moved into dark position. Their roots are never bare, as it would slow the growth early in the growing season and the plants would possibly lose the blooming time. This soil element is important, because when properly done, it can speed the plant in the spring by almost 3/4 of the winter reconvalescence time (not like potting, a little soil, just to enough to cover the basic root bulb).
Basically, they take some bag made off hard materials with tight sowing (difficult to cut through) and they put the roots inside (in soil ! ). Watering is regular, every month (but in case of bananas, it should be in much smaller amounts, if at all...). The bag lets water go away.
This way, the plants may start growing, if the temps are ideal, very soon.
Maybe the temperatures were too low (10°C and more) and maybe you just had bad luck... Dunno, will try this new method. :D

Jack, I was advised by frank and others to keep it in a room with very low temperatures just above freezing.
I made the experience that the chance to bring the pseudo stem through winter is better when the root bulb is kept dry.
I tried more than once to keep some of the roots alive with a wrapped root ball as you are saying, but unfortunately my biggest dwarf brazilian close to blooming died last winter because of that!
To keep the bulb clean is also something I was advised by experienced Americans. The roots mostly die back anyway.
Maybe it would work better to keep it at a warmer place, around 10°C.
If I still had the place in my garden to plant out some other types, I would like to try again. Unfortunately I don't!

Many times I kept one nice plant in my living room. Musa rajapuri was the first, ten two times musa d.brazilian, once musa FHIA-18. They like any bright place.
Because the root system is disturbed, you have to watch the watering. Also for different bugs and mites you have to watch out. The best is you wash the leaves of with a wet cloth once a month.
They like it warm and cosy. Avoid too much dry air.

Actually no, like Kalabrian, I'm rather new to bananas (less than 1 and half year). My SDCs are just pushing first normal sized leaves and finally made some trunk.
I got to bananas after seeing it fruiting in a car shop, where it was potted in about 100 litres, received mild watering and had semi light. I couldn't believe it. :D About 60 small fruits, each from 10 to 12cm... My friend, who works there allowed me to steal the lwoer hand and after I tasted it, the magical lovelly dream came through... Unlike ANY banana that you have eaten from the store.
They are much sweeter, filled with more water, are soft and yet dense... Magical...
I have about 3 potted new SDCs to give away and about 16 more on the mother corms, too small to be separated...
Already I gave away about 10 small plants, 2 of them can be found in the Bratislava Botanical Garden, greenhouse section. :D
I'm forever in their records as donor... :D

Have to notice that DC are much faster growers than SDC. I have one SDC in pot and one in free soil for about a month now and no sign of new growth at all. Both looks healthy but they are still sitting ducks. DC gives me new leaf every week.

Not at my place, Ante. I also found out, that SDCs stop growing, when they have a small pot. Interestingly, they need a little bit larger pots than DC, becasue they make about tripple or more times many pups...

And what is that thing about counting leaves till bloom?
:woohoonaner:
Well, it's said that when the plant reaches its 60th leaf, it might flower or that it will flower only after it has pushed out 60 leaves since seeing the light.
I never tested this method, but is regarded to be quite ineffective and uncertain. Many cultivars can go much later, many at that time. You never know and the bloom is always a nice surprise, isn't it? ;)

Will you try to overwinter some of your bananas also outside (if you have lowest lows about -3°C, than it shouldn't be a problem)?

Jack,
if there is -3°C for two or three hours it might not be a problem, but if it's that cold for 10,12 or more hours the pseudo stem of a cavendish or any other cultivar will be gone. The best chance I would give to an orinoco or dwarf orinoco followed by an brazilian/dwarf brazilian.
Maybe it can be saved with a temporary protection. For example a sheet over the entire plant and wrapping the pseudo stem.

Yes, that's what I've seen people doing in zones 9 USDA, they wrap them and protect outside, just as we do it with our palms here in zones 7/8. :D

Some fu**** cold front from the Atlantic, thanks Western Europe. That's what hit the Marcel about one day earlier, than me. In 2 days, we are back to our 30/16 (day/night). At least according to the radars and meteo, so it might get a little bit hotter and drier than that.
Well, Ante, it's different, when you aren't heated up by a sea in the night, the temps usually go much lower, than in your country. Water has always been one of the best heat and energy mediums...
I've been to Croatia many times: Vodice, Split, Dubrovnik, Makarska (city) and of course some hidden playa out there, the hotel name was Pharaon or something like that. Wonderful bay, sandlike coast (although it was incomparable to Italian sand) - only nice memories, but that was back in 1996, I was maybe 8 then. :D ;) For a brief period of time, I really thought that I would like to live there. But the frosts are discouraging. -3°C :D
Learning Croatian is a matter of 2 or 3 months at most, not only that I live in the village (close to our capital), that was a Cratian colony back in the Austrio-Hungarian monarchy, but Hrvatska can be heard a lot in here. Even your folklore groups come to play here and dance every now and then (more often than Slovaks :D )

No, unfortuantely not.
I moved to this region only about 2 years ago, it's a village (and villa) part of Bratislava.
I myself am about 2/5 Hungarian, 3/5 Slavic, but that's quite in dispute... :D It's been almost solely Hungarian-Slovak marriages in my family. :D Well, this Central European region has had it's share of mixing:
Celts, Germanic, Frank, Roman (the city I live in was once Acquincum and Vindobonna fortress region), Slavic, Hungarian, Turkish ! and many other...
Ou how, there goes the secret of our mixed heritage... :D

Welcome back. The new bananas are doing quite well. They don't seemed to be doing anything above the ground level so I carefully dug 2 (of 5) out. Then I saw, that both have made small new roots, white, short and in large amounts. One corm was also making an offshot, so I think that give it a week or 2 and they will show themselves from the ground.
Considering the recent cold spell we are having, I also moved those 2 that I dug up to 2 big buckets and have them grow there, in my room, where the temperatures are ideal for day and night long growth and development. If they stayed outside, they would probably stop growing and I want to see them shooting and growing asap.
How was your trip?

:woohoonaner:
And possibly an offshot situation soon, because the second root system has made a new corm (actually he was making no roots, just this one corm) and as it seems, he finished his job and there was a pointing tip trying to head out of the soil at the bottomest bottom. So in a few days, maybe a week or two, we might get our first results. :D An actual leaf and possibly more offshots. The other 3 are outside, still in the soil. After seeing that they actually work, I didn't want to risk damaging any root system, it's still very fragile. So they stayed out and hopefully, the Hill banana will like 2 or 3 quite cold days of maybe 18/9 day/night temps (maybe 2 or 3 more days, just after I finish my Electrotechnics exams :D ), than we are back to our highs again.

Agreed, we have 50 days tops until the trades become unsafe here in central, western and northern Europe. I got one SDC from a company here and it came to me in November. Fried. It took 2 weeks of care and special conditions until it started to recover. ;)
You've got one Grand Nain and one Musa basjoo 'Rubra' here Ante, Grand Nain is perfectly ready, but I would give the basjoo a week or 2. So that it gets better. You will be able to grow this basjoo wildly in Makarska and it has incredible easthetics value. Really beautiful. To help you guys out of a dream: Musa basjoo 'Red'that is available here in Europe has nothing to do with basjoo, and has no basjoo-blood in it whatsoever. It is just a tropical species and won't even survive an unheated greenhouse.
From my point of view I think some people in some TC lab messed something up, and switched/mislabeled a batch. On progressing of growth someone saw red markings and must
have thought 'hey cool, a red mutant of Musa basjoo, lets try to TC that one even more!'.
I've read (on a German forum I believe) that it is sopposudly Musa rubra (Musa rubra (http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drc/musa_rubra.htm)).

Consider me young and foolish, but I intend to do such a trip next year. Not primarily for naners, but a trip around the Europe would be cool. The question now stands: To which part of the Europe go first? North is cold in summer, East is dangerous unless I speak Russian, so it's south or west. Or I'll have to learn Russian.
What about you Ante, care for some Sochi region visit? Or maybe also Calabria, French riviera, Portugal...
You are welcome in our house here ! I would be happy to give you a guided tour of Belgium. And I have a spare room where you can overnight for free.

Hi TropicaFlore (http://www.tropicaflore.com) in France is offering 25 % on all plants untill the end of August. They ship to all the EU-Countries and to Switzerland. No discount on shipping fees.
Open an account and with the response email you'll receive a promotion code which entitles you to the discount.

You had French at primary school? Wow. That's really... surprising. There aren't many non-francophonic nations, who even bother learning French, it just hasn't got that much use as Spanish, English and in my region also German.

I also studied French in high school. Then it was common in Spain. It has now been displaced by English.
My second language is French.

Great to see so many people posting again! :woohoonaner:
Yeah, languages have been my passion ever since I saw Indiana Jones as a young boy and taken Nikola Tesla as my scientific role model.
English has become more important in Europe because of the new admitees. Slavic countries have been learning English rather then French, which was one of the main languages in the EU ('cause English is so much easier).
Then of course German, which is in Central Europe very strong mainly due to Germany's location on the map, Spanish, which is beeing spoken by close to 430 million people, Russian,... needless to say why....
More interesting European languages are also those, from which many other languages originate, such as Greek as a rough basis for Slavic alphabets and pronunciation and Italian (or Latin) as a base for Roman language family.
French is very popular in northern and central Africa though. ;)
Btw. the video clip that made me wanna learn more about Greek, way of life in Greece... Gotta love these old cultures. :ha:
