I don't know if there are any other in the BR area, but there are several members from LA on our site here. I'm sure they'll pipe up soon. Don't worry, you're not alone.

I stopped and had dinner somewhere in Baton Rogue back in 1988, but don't grow bananas there.
You can click on the map under your name and view some folks you have taken the time to indicate their location. At Bananas.org - Member Map - Map of our member's locations! Yvonne,
I am in the Baton Rouge area and these are the bananas that I am growing.
Musa acuminata - 'Ice Cream'
Musa balbisiana - 'Thai Black'
Musa Dwarf Cavendish
NOID - Very likely to be Orinoco
Musa Balbisiana - 'Gigantea'
Musa Red Iholene
Musa acuminata sumatrana - 'Zebrina' 'Blood Banana'
Musa Bordelon
Musa Ornata - Lavender
Musa siamensis - ‘Thai Gold’
Musa Mannii
Musa Becarrii
Musella lasiocarpa - 'Golden Lotus'
Ensete ventricosum var 'Maurelli' - 'Red Abyssinian Banana'
Ensete ventricosum
Ronald,
Zebrina, ornata, and a large variety (looks like Orinoco) are very common in Louisiana and considered 'weeds' by some people that do not try to control them. Oddly enough, Bordelon which is the only banana from Louisiana is not very common while zebrinas have become a common sight b/c of the big box stores.

yeah ive seen the "weeds" down there. i have seen a few grown next to two story houses that looked like they have never seen a frost before.. i had to take a big corm with me on my way back. i think a lot of gulf bananas come from orinoco too.

I will be posting some updated pictures to my photo album some time soon.
Many of my plants are in pots and should have been planted already. I just have not had the time. If you are interested in trading some time, local trades are the best. No postage to pay and you can trade big plants. The ones I have that appear to be Orinoco are huge and I really need to remove a few of them. Here is a link to a complete list of what I am growing and what I am looking for.

Ronald,
In your travels through coastal Louisiana and Mississippi, I think most of the bananas you saw are commonly thought to be Orinocos. Stokes Tropicals used to sell a banana identified as 1780 which was a banana imported from Hispaniola in 1780 to Laura Plantation, an antebellum plantation north of New Orleans on the Mississippi. This plantation house is still there and so are the stands of bananas. Mr. Glen Stokes thinks these bananas are of Cavendish origin. And Isaac mentioned Musa Bordelon which is an ornamental discovered growing in Bordelonville, La. I've not seen this banana other than at the Stokes nursery.

Hi Ronald, I bought this Williams hybrid plant last summer at my local nursery. It was a single plant. The winter tempertures killed it. But look at all the pups. I counted 14 pups I think this banana plant will be the weeds you had mentioned.

I am reducing my huge Ice Cream clump down and will be digging out a couple 5-6 foot pups and a couple that are 8-9 foot if anyone in my area is interested.
