View Full Version : Shops, nurseries... in Europe

Time to give this brand new European section a new, dynamic look.
I posted this once somewhere, but it would me much more appropriate in this section, so here it goes...

Since I didn't have much of a succes with other ways, I would be interested in knowing all the possible shops, nurseries and places all over the Europe, from East to West, from North to South.

That's when it occured to me that such a list would be very handy and useful resource for all the Europeans...
If every person adds 1 company at least, we surely will get them all. Let's make a list of all the shops and nurseries offering tropical plants (must not be only banana, but preferred).

Also, your experience with shops, comments on shipments, anything will be noted and recorded to provide most accurate information for all the members to see. Hope anyone of you, who can, will contribute.
You can also always pm me and I will add the new item into this list...

But you know, that once hobby becomes work, it's not the same hobby as it used to be before?
You could also open large citrus station. :D That would be good in your region...

I was wondering if all the shops mentioned here ship all over europe / eu? If not, could that be marked aswell? I personally use mypalmshop.com (located in the netherlands) for my palm stuff and they do sell bananas too. Not many tho', at the moment they are offering only Ensete maurelli and Musa basjoo. The 'nanas I have are bought through ebay. Maybe we should also include those ebay stores that always sell them?

Just wanted to tell the people in Europe how lucky you lot are!! LOL
The nice thing that Europeans are so lucky about is that they have much more united shipping policies and can often get things shipped from UK all the way to the Nederlands, and even better when you live in Eastern Europe, you can get things shipped easier, because they haven't quite pulled hard on the regulation strings yet. I guess the US has it's reasons, and we could have had a much worse breakout of Sigatoka had it been less enforced.

Inside EU sending is no problem. I also received a pup from Ante (not in Eu) within 5 days after sending it, so it's not a problem.

Shops see it as a problem only if there are issues with certiphicates. As long as Europe is concerned and you pay the shipping, there's no problem there. Or at least I haven't experienced any.

Biggest shipping problem all over world is LACK OF GOOD WILL wich I prooved many times. In the bigging there was theme that shipping naners between USA and Europe isnt even possible and I recived lot of plants(pups), few large corms and several other plants from US.
I succsesifully shipped few plants to SEA. Unfortunally, didnt recive any but many of U knows reason why :(.
Trading and shipping naners among Europe members goes smoothly too. I hope that I will proove that with foto documents by the end of this week again :).
Im waiting for new shippment, wahoo!!!
It isnt hard. U just need to have willing parts on both ends, right? ;)

I sincerely hope so too. They were way too small to be kept like this during weekend. :bananas_b I can't really believe how cheap the connection between us 2 was. :D They sent it as a letter even without weighing, scanning... trying it. Wow. They didn't even need manifest or anythinbg like that.
I was even tempted to send you one 0,5L Kofola, so that you try, but than you would be addicted and with no Kofola around, you could easily run out of steam in late autumn (bringing several 2L bottles next year in summer... :D ).

I'm, newly, expecting a pup from southernmorst, African-like Calabria sometime next week (during a deep cold spell, damn, but it's probably not goping to be very much better), so I hope that everything goes alright. :ha:

Ante, just one thing, if it is too beaten up, please, use some photo editor to make it look better. ;)

Is there a shop in Europe who sell online a banana specific fertilizer (20-5-30 or the like) ?

I just bought potassium nitrate pure which has NPK: 13-0-46. If you add this from time to time, you'll be feeding something more close to banana fertilizer with your desired NPK.
I ordered it at this german shop: Kaliumnitrat kristallin reinst 1kg - Artikeldetailansicht - Dillnuss Online-Shop (http://www.dillnuss.de/shop/article_1009/Kaliumnitrat-kristallin-reinst-1kg.html?shop_param=cid%3D1%26aid%3D1009%26).
They ship within the EU. I wait for my delivery. Should be here soon.
The problem with potassium nitrate is, that most shops won't ship at all or only small quantities, because that stuff could be also used to build bombs. But I just ordered 1,5 kg with 100% pure cristalline potassium nitrate.

And there is Tine's Shop, also in Germany Tine´s Shop fuer alle Bananenfreunde : 3 kg Bananendünger Bananen Dünger (http://www.bananen-freak.de/bananendünger-bananen-dünger-p-69.html?bigwareCsid=811b21b6207897749f6b2861419f885d)
She has also banana fertilizer NPK 14:6:24 and is shipping to EU countries!

No, I don't think so. It is rare even in USA.

I wrote to "going bananas" in Florida who is the only seller I found on internet but they replied that they do not ship anything to Europe anymore due to our strict regulation about living plants and customs .... they said that most of the time , the plants spent so many day in quarantine that once they got to their final destination were badly damaged or almost rotten...

That's really a pity for us, amatour gardeners... but on the other hand it make sense on keeping Europe safe from biological treats.....

Just got back from Auchan (a sort of Wal-mart) and saw a nana on a shelf.... it was pretty big and looked like a dwarf cavendish to me.. I looked at the tag that was made of plastic with the picture and the instructions and to my surprise it was labeled only "MUSA" ...... I was upset because it was not a hand made label from a farmer but a professional one you see in many greenhouses...
Ok, not evereyone knows or care about the specific cultivar , but it's like if I want to buy a "Fuji" apple tree and every tag says only "apple tree"..... there are dozens of different apples just like bananas....
It was a shame , because it was sold only for 7€ and was tall like 1 meter with great foliage.

Quality bananas in Europe can be bought for less, but are very rarely available. You're right, the most widely sold variety is Dwarf or Super Dwarf Cavendish (90% of the time). Other 8% would probably be basjoo and sikkimensis.

The only real hope for Europe is trading.

Also, it's shame about the taxonomy. It really needs to be worked at. But I'm not a biologists, so I can't really say much into this matter.

Hi!
Thank you for the link. I've placed an order a week ago for an Allagoptera arenaria with europalms but I had to cancel it because shipping was really too expensive.... it was something like 35€ for a 20cm palm worth 10€ ....

I had a better experience with canarius.... I bought the allagoptera for 6€ and a Gran Nain for 14€ and shipping was 20€

Seriously , why they don't write the common known names of those MUSAS ? Or do they are new and differents cultivars?

Great list of nurseries you have there! I'm planning on ordering some plants and "Amulree Exotics" seems to be the cheapest especially now when they have 50% off everything. I have had a look at "Achim's Bananen shop" too and they have a huge range of varieties!

So my question is have any of you guys any experience with any of these nurseries?

Also, "Amulree Exotics" writes "Carriage is charged at £18.00 for orders up to £160.00 via an overnight delivery" on their site. Does this really mean that you can order several plants and pay a total shipping cost of £18 and then having the plants at your doorstep by the next day? Or have I got it all wrong? :ha:

Does anyone knows a nursery willing to ship a Dwarf Brazilian to Italy ?
So far I've found only "rare bananas" in US but shipping and phytocertificate costs are insane...
I'm searching also a dwarf Namwah.

I want a Dwarf Brazilian, too! I searched all my sources, but so far no luck. I sent also an email request to one of my sources if Dwarf Brazilian will be available soon.
Dwarf Namwah seems also to be not available at the moment. But I have one and if there will be a pup in spring, I could send it to you.

Thanks a lot it would be much apreciated.

I've two friends in Brazil and I could ask them to find one, since it should be common there, but there will be the problem of phytosanitary certificate.... I think they would not know how to get it and without it there is a big chance that it would be confiscated upon arriving in Europe....

I should ask to Thailandplant... maybe he can get it one somewhere.....

I've got a Dwarf Brazilian. It's circa 1.5m high and has one veeery small pup (for Ante) and another coming just right off the ground. Both stopped growing after I repotted the plant in November, but the mother plant continues to proliferate. I'd say it's the lack of daylight that bothers those little babies down below those leaves. I might nourish the next pup after Ante for you guys! Whatdya say?

I received no positive answers on my quest for a Dwarf Brazilian here in Europe.
But Jack may hopefully be able to supply us with a pup. In autmn I have asked a banana friend in Germany who also owns one, but there were no pups in sight. I might ask for an update, but I doubt that there's already something in sight!
I just checked on my nanas in my greenhouse and all are doing fine, but don't grow very much at the moment. The Dwarf Namwah is about 30 cm at the pstem. It was a small pup last August when I got it. I'll let you know guys.

By the way: My California Gold did better than the much bigger Rajapuri during the cold (both outside in the ground). I'll post some pics soon!

Found a source!!!!
Exoticgarten (http://www.exoticgarten.eu/1808581.htm) in Austria has some Dwarf Brazilians in stock. They sell them for 28 €. More plants are due to arrive in April.
If you check the offer on the website you'll find a lot of rare bananas. I don't know if they're all available now and they haven't published prices yet for most of their offer.
They say on their website, that they don't have pics from all the plants, so there are "example pics" for some cultivars.
And I also hae no idea if they speak English and will ship within Europe, but why shouldn't they. I'll ask them. If they don't speak English, I could help out.
They also have Dw. Namwah!

Hi Carlosfv,

I got it from the US and it came from Jeff Earl. I don't remember the price now, but he has auctions on eBay. Spring/early summer is the time he usually sells them. But he doesn't ship outside of the US. I received the plant with a "stopover" and it was resent to me and sneaked through customs. I have been lucky.
But Exoticgarten is claiming to have them for sale here in Europe. I posted the website just a few days ago here in this thread. Even though I own one myself, I asked them, where they got it from, because it must be the first time ever in Europe this variety is for sale in a shop. And it would be good to check if it's the "real thing". So far I got no answer, but it'll be interessting.

I'm growing the California Gold (40 cm stem - still small, but from a good sized corm) outside in the ground, side by side with a Rajapuri. The Cali Gold survived the 7 freezes I had (down to - 3 ° C) so far this winter much better than the Rajapuri. The cigar pushing out of the Cali Gold still shows some green inside the folded leaf. And this part is unprotected. The stem is covered in cloth. The stem of the Rajapuri is also covered, but all leaves have been gone in the second night below 0°. A few days ago I had to cut one third of the Rajapuri's stem, because it didn't look to good. It was about 1,10 m before. Of course there's mulch around the plants.

Hi, just a quick update....

As you know Thailand market is open again to EU buyers , thanks to reasons that is better not to investigate....:ha: Alson the time needed to treat the bulbs before getting the Phytosanitary certificate had been "magically reduced to one week or less...:08:

On the EU stores front, there is Amulree that is putting back in stock a lot of 'nanas previously unavailable, and for the moment the "winter" discount code is still active (50% off everything) so you can buy a lot of plants at 5£ .....

Bananenshop.de and Bananen-freaks.de seem frozen..... no update since last October. If you find anything still in stock , they will not ship untill minimum temps will raise above 0° (and in Germany I don't know when it will happens)

Exoticgarten still didn't reply to any mail , not on their shop's mailbox not to their e-bay's one , even if they are currently running a dozen of auctions.... I really don't understand them.

Canarius bear in catalog only Dwarf Orinoco and Gran Nain, it's worth to consider if you are interested also in their huge collection of Mangos and Papayas.

ATGTREE , ( Home Page (http://www.atgtree.com/musa.html)) the thai seller that has a lot of variegated Ta-nee and Namwah does not reply to mails.

Europalms.be says that they are reclutant to ship plants outside Holland because they fear they could die.... .... so only seeds from them.

Lucky palmen has actually 3 ebay's auctions running but hopefully in a near future they'll have ploenty more, so keep an eye on them 'cause I made some very good bargain with them. (In case you buy anything from them , ask them to TAG the plants , otherwise if you buy two o more nanas you'll never know what is what).

That's all for the moment.

BB73

Thanks Rick for the update:

I just have to add, that I tried to contact Exoticgarden again a few days ago and they also didn't answer this time. In my first mail I didn't ask for international shipment, so that could be the reason why they answered. But it seems to me that they're affraid of international customers or are on holiday now. But anyway it's not nice to not answer. A simple: Sorry we don't ship (internationally) would be okay.
In other countries this behavior is quite common (Thailand maybe, Greece for sure), but I didn't except this for a shop in Austria...

hi All,

I am a newbie on this forum but as this thread is a 'sticky', I'd like to tell you -- exoticgarten has already made me 3 shipments this year (to cyprus, not the easiest to ship to!!) with diff nana's & palm seedlings..

They are very nice folks - once replaced 2 pups that didn't make it through the journey! just have a little patience, they seem super busy at times. It helps to speak/write German.
On the last 2 shipments, they always gave me presents (extra nana pup or palm seedlings) :)

They also have an ebay shop (ebay.at) with most actual offerings...

for those in need, give it a try ! ;)

Hi,

Tried this one (basjoo pups):

http://flagspot.net/misc/wnl.gif Palmenverkoop.nl (http://www.palmenverkoop.nl/) (press http://www.bananas.org/efwkessels@telfort.nl here (efwkessels@telfort.nl) for direct e-mail contact)- cheap, their prices for hardy palms are astonishing as well as other interesting plants
- personally, I have extremely good experience with them
- they ship to the whole Europe
- difficult communication, because the shop owner can speak English or German very little.

Very good experience too !

Google translation (http://translate.google.com/) solved the difficult communication problem

Hello Tsonyo!
May be this shop (http://www.oasistropicalplantsandtrees4u.com/cardaba-banana-plant--limited-availability.html). I guess they deliver (http://www.oasistropicalplantsandtrees4u.com/shandhapo.html) to Europe too.

Hey

Just wanted to mention I'd found a place in Sweden that sells Musa Velutina seeds. Not a banana place as such but they do just this one variety.

Rosa banan (Musa velutina) - Vägg i Vägg (http://vaggivagg.se/index2.php?p=p_53&sName=Rosa-banan-(Musa-velutina))

Works for me, anyway!

A german palm store: palmenmann.de - Palmen, Olivenbäume, winterharte Palmen, Hanfpalme, Palmenhandel (http://www.palmenmann.de)

He does not have many variants of Musa but he is fairly cheap. Also very cheap with the other palm species.

Just saw this shop mentioned in another thread:
Amulree Exotics (http://turn-it-tropical.co.uk/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=4)

Nice selection of bananas.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but has anyone ordered anything from europalms recently?

I've been hearing stories, and experienced it myself, of non-delivery of ordered items, seems like he may not be in business anymore, but still taking orders.

Just want to share my excellent impression from froshartepalmen.de (http://frosthartepalmen.de/index.php/online-store/view/category/virtuemart_category_id/24)
I find him here and last week purchased 4 banana plants - M. Itinerans
M. Balbisiana Gigantea
M. SikkimensisXOrnata, and sikkimensis.
Last my bananas i buy via e-bay was OK, but they were 15 cm-plug plants with cut leaves, so I have very niece surprise receiving these today: Markus's bananas I received today are in absolutely HI QUALITY and BEST packing. Prices are the most reasonable for this quality of plants and I can highly recommend this nurcery in Europe. I'm sure I'll buy again from this source.
Thanks again to Markus from Germany, and best my respect to him and his excellent job!:nanadrink:

.

Me : )
On February 1st, purchased some seeds and sent money via direct bank charge-the exact ammount they ask.
Till now - no answers to my letters,(the only answer I received was with total costs of delivery plus seeds cost), no delivery, nothing...

My folks in Germany bought some banana plants from Home (http://www.frosthartepalmen.de)
I gave the link to Jon who created a separate thread, but it might become handy for someone in this combined list as well.

Hi,
My first banana, an Abyssinian, I bought through

Urban Jungle Plants for sale or buy mail order exotic plants online or visit Norwich nurseries Norfolk Plant Nursery Garden Centre, uk. (http://www.urbanjungle.uk.com)

And after that I bought a lot of other plants, especially aroids, cannas and bananas.

Sometimes over the year, they make sales, and prices go down almost for half.

I recommend this nursery for the high quality and best packing.

Today I'm trying to buy some bananas through froshartepalmen.de
Let's wait....

Are you exchanging anything?! :) only have 6 varieties but the local one from Azores - dwarf cavendish kind is producing incredibly well and delicious. :goteam:

Is it correct that Musa "Kluai Roi Wi" is Musa Thousand Fingers? I ask because in the palmscenter-shop you get one for 11,60 and a Red Iholene for 11,50. That`s cheap, right?

Hi Linda
Can I have that contact please :)
