Thanks for that video!! Do they harvest coconuts by hand even for commercially grown? You live in such an awesome place! I remember looking at your pictures last year when they did that in your front yard!
I love it!!

Yes Deb - they still harvest them by hand because the trees are so tall and manpower is cheaper than machinery. Time to get it done in the front yard again with June fast approaching!! The winds have been very strong for the past few weeks even without any storms.

I watched them climb the ones on the beach when we visited the Dominican Rep. They make it look so easy.
Good luck with the coming Hurricane season.
Really - no you don't - they are so tall!!
Trust me , I really do.

Climbing coconut trees is kids' stuff here cos the old blokes like me don't do it any more! :ha:
I used to do it when I was a kid when we didn't have the dwarf varieties. It is actually very easy if you are relaxed. The ringed trunk helps a lot in getting the grip. For the taller trunks, notches are cut into them to easier climbing. Nowadays, city kids don't know anything about this and their parents wouldn't let them try for the sake of their safety. However, if you go to the kampongs (villages) the kids are still good at it.
For actual harvesting in quantity, people still use the short tailed macaque, Maccaca nemestris to do it. They are way more efficient than humans.

Climbing does not frighten me, falling does not frighten me, but that sudden stop is rough!

Shaggy - you make me laugh!!
Jack - they are on their way - should be with you in about 10 days!! It's 9pm and just cooling down a bit to 82f. Time to give your global warming a bit of a shake for when they arrive.
Tog - I have seen film of the macaques picking nuts and they are really good at it, but we have no apes or monkeys on the island so people have to do it. My trees are only moderately tall with about 40ft of trunk.

This is something I'd llike to try --up to 6ft high LOL. Then, I want a belt around trunk hooked up to me, & spiked shoes on.
Ante, will you loan me your equipment to climb poles?
