Just re-read my post:

I gave away a few last year but things are moving slowly this year and I don't see any signs of pups yet so I'll probably end up getting what I do get. We had warm weather a couple of weeks ago but then things slowed down.

Why am I getting so many pups on my banana plants. The ca. gold now has eight. Is it just the good weather.

Has it flowered already, Tony? I had one that had produced about 5-6 after flowering and that was after some earlier ones had already been removed. The two I have right now are only 3-4 feet tall so no pups yet. Congrats!

No it hasn't flowered yet. This was a pup I got in late april ebay from Jeff. All my banana plants are putting out multiple pups .

Tony, I'm confused (nothing new!). On 4/29/2009 you started this thread and said you had 5 pups and were just needing a flower but now you said you got this pup from Jeff Earl in late April. Surely Jeff did not send a plant with 5 pups on it. Did you mean you got it from him in April 2008? I don't believe he has sold any on eBay this year (he confirmed that when I visited him yesterday). Please straighten me out on the timeframe you've had it. Also, how tall is the psuedostem right now?

Oops should have said april 2008. The p, stem is 5ft.

Harvey, did you get any pictures of his place? I'm really dying to see what it looks like, the whole yard and his California Golds, other than that video the news made about him.

Mine are coming back up this spring from the ground, so they are indeed hardy (to 8a). I protected but the protection did more damage than good, so I am almost sure I will not protect this upcoming winter. Next time you see him, tell him they're doing fine even in Virginia!

Hi Taylor,

No, I didn't take my camera with me. I had thought about it but was making too many stops on the way there and on the way back home and didn't want to leave my camera in my truck, though I do have insurance on my equipment.

Most of Jeff's bananas are at a garden plot which I have not seen. He had several bananas in his back yard, his cherimoya was blooming as was his lychee. His Thomson mango is catching up to mine and his jaboticaba look very nice but no flowers. He's got a nice large potted plumeria which was starting to push out new leaves. He's got a breadfruit in a garbage can for a pot and it was growing well last year but suffered a setback when indoors while he was on vacation, but it's putting out new growth now. His back yard is small but he has it crowded with a lot of nice things. I'll let him know your Virginia CA Gold is doing well!

Hopefully you'll get a flower within the next month! Mine are a bit behind yours.

Why would you try to call someone out like that? The original poster must have slipped with the year, but even if he didn't why would you want to go point fingers at someone, to see if he/she is telling the truth about buying a banana from this Jeff guy? i don't get it!!!
i just read a post about why there are so many unactive members on here, things like that could be one reason! No offense at all i am fairly new to the banana thing, but I would never question someone like that! Just my worthless two cents!

Sterling, you are completely out of line here!!! I was confused by what Tony had posted and asked him about it and that was it. I didn't know if he had two California Gold plants or if he got a big plant that produced pups for him right away. It might seem obvious to you now that Tony said he made a mistake. My intentions had nothing negative about them, unlike yours.

Best wishes,

Harvey

By the way, I gave away 4 Cal Gold pups over the past 2 years, including one I bought from Taylor for $50, so I like to follow how they do.

Wow, Tony, you must be treating it well, I don't think I've heard of anyone (including Jeff) getting that many pups. What are you fertilizing with? I've wondered if higher amounts of nitrogen are more likely to produce pups or not and wonder also if alfalfa pellets help produce pups (like it helps encourage new shoots on roses).
