Why not visit Chris (Rmplmnz) from Tampa while you're there? That's not too far from Gainesville. Well, unless you get enough bananas in Gainesville.

The out-of-state tuition is +$30,000 per year. Can we do a big banana fundraiser to help me pay?! Otherwise it will be very difficult.

;)

Just kidding...I would feel so bad if I didn't even get in!

Thanks for the good luck, Sam. That school is so hard to get into recently. I'm also going to apply to Virginia Tech and maybe University of Hawaii Manoa...maybe. It's just that UF looks like such a nice school, a campus tour would just top it all off!

Let's not get ahead of ourselves! I would hate to disappoint anyone here.

I hope I am not invading Sam's thread...but totally aside from bananas, where would you all go and why? Bananas can be considered, but that's not really the way I am going to choose my school.

Where else has a great Ag program?

By the way Sam, you can get Grad school at UF for in-state tuition even though you're in Tennessee.

NC State and Georgia have a great Ag program. Tennessee has a great Ag program also (gotta plug Tennessee, I go to school here!). Off the top of my head, that's the three that come to mind, regionally.

I've considered grad school at UF, since my entire family lives in Gainesville now (well, almost all of them).

(had to throw that one in for stumpy!) i did bring back a saw tooth palm(there are teeth on the fronds) and a century plant. sorry i didnt get to tampa to see chris' lovely yard. guess ill just have to wait till the end of summer semester.....i will be heading south again for 2-3 weeks before fall semester. lol. i did however see tarpon springs and fell in love. btw i managed to pull all A's this last semester, have 2 classes this summer, 3 classes this fall and get to walk come spring. i also have an application coming to me for U of F. gpa is good enough so im not too worried about being accepted. wahoo. and when and if i do move to fl......all of my nanas are going with me. im not leaving one. :ha:

That is easy to do as seemingly all the land is for sale...each year more of the fruit stands/groves disappear.....

Any idea as to why? Since I have started buying plants, seeds and produce online or by mail order, most of what I get comes from Homestead. Then again, they are in hurricane danger all the time if memory serves right.

I'm very interested to know why, too. And are they cheap because of issues, or expensive because they're being converted to real estate?

Hell, if it's cheap, I may just buy a small plat, maybe 1 or 2 acres if reasonable.

Sam, Great job on the grades.......sorry to hear that your poor feet had to touch the swamp surface. I usually just get a garden hose out and spray my shoes off, then yell at the dog for leaving it where I could step in it.....I had to say it..........GO BUCKS

"expensive because they're being converted to residential real estate"

Everyone want to sell to developers...it is too much work to grow exotic fruit and sell for cheap in the roadside fruit stands...in the100's of trips I have taken up and down Krome Avenue (Hwy 997) I wish I had taken a pic or two...ok..hmmnn..I may have a pic or two of the fruit hall...I will edit this post and add a pic or two/three...

Hey, Chris, I recognize the avocado, mango, longan, sapodilla, and an apparent bottle of beer, but what else is pictured here? What's that big reddish thing below the bowl with long-necked avocado?

Thanks,

Harvey

Hello Harvey,

There is also one (green) Guava in the pics. The long neck avocados are Russells (West Indian variety very popular in South Florida). The reddish fruit is a mango (probably Keitt). The small green fruit in front of the bowl next to the mango are Spanish Limes (Genip, Mamoncillo, Quenepa, Sapindaceae Melicocca bijuga L.). There is also a sugar apple (Annona squamosa) in the bowl that is somewhat obscured by the mangos. The fruit you are referring to as Sapodilla are actually Mamey Sapote. The bottle of beer was added for scale. It is difficult to tell; but the mangoes in the bowl are massive (the long necked avocados are really long 12 to 18 inches).

Russell (http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/avocado-viewer/pages/Russell.htm)

All the best,

Chris
