Were the other ones that rotted in a pots or planted in the ground? Did you bring them inside? Were they in a well lit area or in a dark place like the basement. What temperature were the subjected too? Did you water them through the winter and how much? Did you give them fertilizer during winter months. There's probably about 50 more questions but lets start with those and maybe we can help this one survive more than one season.

By the way nice buy there!

There are a few more things... Was the one you just got outside or inside? If it was outside, was it in sun or shade? If it was inside, or in shade, I think you should gradually acclimate it to sun. Do you intend to plant it in the ground, or keep it in a pot? I think the weather, in your area, should be warm enough that, if it was outside in sun, you can plant it right away. If it was inside, or in shade, you can plant it out as soon as it's acclimated.

A basjoo in the ground in Myrtle Beach should not die due to the winter cold. I removed one in July 2007, got and removed pups all 2008, and now have 3 more pups in the same place the mother was 2 years ago. They are tough son of a guns.

I live in Triad of NC Winston-Salem area & leave mine in ground year round, they die back to the ground, but with just a few inch's of mulch they are protected enough to grow back, mine just started sprouting this weekend. You should be ok, leave it in ground it will start new growth soon if not already.
