Dwarf Pisang Mas - Heirloom Cultivar
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=16835&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=16835)
This is an introductory post and I will update on the progress of this plant until it fruits.
I found this plant place in a small kampong(village) in one of our search for old/heirloom cultivars. According to the owner, it will fruit at only 3+ft with a bunch of 4 combs of very sweet fruits. With this in mind, I thought it would be a perfect project for an edible container grown 'naner for the home.
In this pix, the plant is approx 10 mths old with a p-stem height of only 2.5ft. In stature, it looks like a scaled down version of a normal 'naner plant with regular looking long petioles and leaves. It is unlike the dwarf varieties like the SDC or DC which are stumpy looking. I had earlier put the pot in full sun and it grew badly even with copious watering and fert. It is only after I have moved it into the shade that it is growing well. So far in my research, I have yet to find a similar looking dwarf cultivar.
Based on its unique qualities of;
1. Dwarf container growing size.
2. Shade loving.
3. Edible high quality fruits.
This plant is ideal for temperate growing for the patio during the warm season and easy handling for indoor wintering. If this plant proves its quality, I might have it TC'd for commercial purposes. Interesting? :ha:

Careful what you wish for! Tog isn't as tall as he looks. You may wake up one morning to find Tog standing in your livingroom! :)
Chong......you have no real proof I was drooling.
Tog......you might have it TC'd?.......You may wake up(if you ever sleep) and find me in your living room...........don't worry I won't drool. Where (exactly/precisely) is this plant being kept?

Hey guys...y'all velly funneee...:ha::ha::ha:
Here's a shot of another of my Dwarf Pisang Mas planted into the ground under the shade of a Nangka (Jackfruit) tree. Without the tree as a comparison, it looks like a normal size 'naner. I tried planting it in the open under full sun, it looked like a permanent bad hair day! This is a 14 month plant at about 3ft p-stem height.

Tog I found Pisang Mas in a state publication. It is known in the Caribbean and South Florida as "Nino." It is a diploid AA form.
I recieved one of these, a guineo gigante (Big Mike), Monte Cristo, un Rojo and guineo blanco last month.
Thank you for posting this, your insightful pictures and comments are very informative and provoke thought and some research. :2239:

Bob,
Are you denying that you were drooling? What's with all the Lysol spray cans and depleted paper towels, then?
I'll race ya to Tog's den!

Is that a little pup coming out of the ground, or just my imagination?

Too many durians again, Chong?
Nah, no puppy there. This plant was in the sun and looking like ****e until, it was relocated to this spot. In only 1 month here, it's looking so good. I managed to get a bunch of pups and I am planting them all over the place. One of them is going into deep shade of about 30% light level right under one of the mangosteen trees. You know how dense the mangosteen grows. I want to see what happens and whether it will fruit. It really, really dislike intense heat and full sun. Interesting? (have to use this, seems like your fav word from my vocab :ha:)

From "Banana Cultivar Names and Synonyms in Southeast Asia":
Pisang Mas (Mlysia, Indon.) = Amas (Phili.) = Kluay Khai (Thai) = Chuoi Trung (Vietn) = Sucrier (International)

I have noticed that my young Glui Kai does better with less than full sun. Does the Dwarf Piisang Mas produce small egg shaped fruit? Could the Dwarf Piisang Mas be the same cultivar as the Glui Kai (Kluai khai, Klue kai, Gluai khai, Glooway kai) that Agri-Starts offers?

Chong has the correct list of this cultivar's synonym in the different countries it is grown.
The Thai's English spelling is Kluay Kai = Egg Banana cos of the short roundish shape of the fruit.
From my observation here, the Sucrier group prefers a partly shaded planting environment.

I didn't exactly deny it.I only pointed out that it wouldn't stand up in court. The race is on.
