Should I remove all the dried up stem left from last years basjoo and scrape out all the mush. Or should I leave them alone and let them come up naturally through the old dead stem????

Remove all the mush that you can. It will spread. If it is brown and mushy, it should be removed. If it is just a dried out leaf that is not mushy, it can remain.

No such thing as "removing too much mush" - if it's squooshy and makes you say ICK when you touch it, it's gotta go.

I actually leave any of the decaying matter but only at ground level such as old stumps etc (not up the pseudostems). I figure that it's a source of nutrients as it decomposes.

Cheers, Barrie.

Thank you .But the only thing is after doing so , the new leaves that opened
broke after a hard rain. I think no support. Also will they end up flowering?
Thanks for any info. This my third year with no Id on them , I hoped that one
would flower. i have bigger ones not in the pics.:waving:
