I once knew a Korean lady that "planted" her fish heads next to her plants and they made great fertilizer according to her. I wonder how well that would work to bury some around a banana (provided the critters don't dig them up)?

Bury them deep, they stink.

I caught a mess of specs in NJ once, and planted pieces next to the rootballs of tomato and pepper seedlings. This was in my fathers garden in the pine barrens of SE NJ.
In 2 days the moles came for the fish. The ground around the garden looked like a subway map. All the plants were knocked over, and then the deer hopped the fence and ate all the plants. That was enough for me - never again.
If you are critterless, try it. Otherwise fish emulsion diluted to mfg spec is perfect, and the stink goes away soon.

Bury 'em deep so your pets won't go after them, and they make excellent fertilizer. I'm known to dig sardines into my soils about once a year, because I can't get fish emulsion here.

One thing you have to take into consideration, the size of the fish part you are using. Why? Long ago, I did something stupid. One of my pet cichlids died and it was about 6in long. I threw it on top of my bougainvillea pot. It was a big pot and a big 6ft plant. The plant was OD'd and died!

When I go fishing I dig deep and bury the guts, head and whatever have you. Good stuff!

Yeah, I've heard of people using fish as fertilizer. In fact, the Native Americans used to plant a fish with their corn. Interesting, huh?

I used to catch a ton of fish when I lived in Oklahoma. We fished for spoonbill mostly. I buried a bunch of the scraps in the garden under the tomato plants. They never did make many tomatoes and the plants attracted flies like crazy. I think I just over did it cause I put a bunch in there.

I had an aquarium fish import business, and used any casualties for fertilizer. The only thing I ever saw eating the fish was a garter (sp?) snake.

Growing up in Michigan I had a couple of neighbors who would bring their weekend catch home intact, then bury heads & tails in their gardens. Their gardens usually looked nice.

Our dog died several winters ago, and I burried him close to a fig tree. The following spring/summer the tree grew more than it ever did in any other year and it produced many, many, many figs.

Since we are a little off course from the fishy side; my old place had a big yard and then I was dealing in reptiles.... I use to put dead ones amongst the bed of my plants. Here are just 2 happenings;
#1 - A big dead tortoise made my cannas grow 7ft tall.
#2 - A couple of dead cobras on my Tiger orchid, Grammatophyllum measuresianum, and it produced 17 spikes with approx 500 flowers.
Looks like basically the decomposition has the right ingredients for plants! :ha:

If the hog farmers don't beat you out, you can get all the fish parts you want from the fish mongers. Of course, by Togs method, you could take up your shovel and clean up the roadkill ! :D
