Very nice, SG

I just recently acquired an Ananas Mongo. If you can ever get one, go for it. It's spineless and gets a very interesting ornamental pineapple. The pineapple's top and bottom are covered with new heads for the new plant.
These two plants are seperations from another, much larger clump, that I bought and gave to a family member as a gift. I'll go there and get a photo of the pineapple that clump is growing and post it here soon.

Would you happen to know the name of this pineapple? It's tips are all spiny, and much stiffer than the Ananas Mongo posted above.

media, those look pretty cool..may need to look into those..

westwood,
what do you fertilize with and what media are they being grown in ?
* 10-4-10 citrus and avocado plant food ..

good potting soil ( miracle grow with no water holding properties), sand and black cow manure. i grow full size fruit in a 5 gal bucket..
you need good drainage..

Full sun or partial Sun? full sun
and watering how much top or bottom
* i water crown once a week to keep blades cleaned out and water drains to soil..i also use mulch on top of soil to help keep moisture in, during 90 F days .
but they're bad about getting root rot especially in winter..

if your bringing them out from inside in spring i put them part sun few days bring on longer sun times and finally to full sun for the summer. my full sun where they sit is app. 8-9 hours a day..

not any more.. after first top and 3 years, well lets say that's history..LOL

slips, shoots and pups only..

once you get one to fruit or before you should have one of the three for next planting.. i've got a slip out there now on one that fruited last winter, it needs to be planted for next years fruit. but i haven't got to it yet, bzy with work and veg. garden.

if yu plant a fruit top, twist it off, not cut. pull off 2-3 bottom layers of blades. then plant that and keep moist and shuld be fine..

yu can order 2 slips cheap from exotic plants
http://www.fruitlovers.com/fruittreeprices.html
these are the sugarloafs.. white, less acidic and eat core.. smaller than gold var..
they'll send them right out to ya..

SG, I'm growing three varieties right now but I have yet to get fruit, ever! This is my first time growing Pineapples. My question is: what happens after you take the fruit from the plant? Does the plant die like a Banana?

slips from fruit stalk will fruit again on same plant
shoots from between blades
pups from ground ( like banana pups)

Slips and shoots grow most rapidly while attached to the mother plant, so it is best to let them grow for several months after the fruit is removed. After these branches are about 12 inches long, you can cut or break them off close to the stem and grow your slips, pups and shoots in the same manner you did your crown. In the case of slips, there may be a small knob at their base. This should be cut off. Because they are larger, slips and shoots will produce a fruit in less time than to takes for a crown. the fruit is most often smaller than first planting..

SouthernGrower, your middle picture of the Del Monte gold, the plant has a reddish hue on the crown, is that common?

fruits aren't as big as golds, white flesh and can eat core..

Thanks S.Grower, you are a greater pineapple rancher than me. =)
I got 3 pineapples fruiting this year. First time! Woohoo!
But mine never really developed much of that red hue, just a few leaves on the bottom portion. I am looking for an edible pineapple which has the most ornamental looking blooms while at the same time is edible. I seen pictures of pineapples that has an almost red / purplish start to the fruit but I am not sure if these were edible varieties.

all of mine are red to purple as the start to flower in order all the up fruit..
flower starts out one color and turns to purple..
