Hi everyone, I am new to growing Bananas, I have a small Musa Helens Hybrid and a Musa Basjoo, I perhaps am trying to run before I can walk, but I am trying to grow Musa Velutina from seed, I have done the text book preparation of steralising the compost and soaking the seeds in warm water, I have sown the seeds in a tray and wrapped it in a plastic carrier bag. Is there anything else I need to be doing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi BB, I think you are going in the right direction of growing 'naners from seeds. It is an extremely rewarding venture. So far what you have done is pretty good. Check out the older threads on the seed germination forum and you will find many interesting postings there.

Good viable Musa dasycarpa syn Musa velutina sds should pop within 3 weeks. All the best! :02:

Sounds like you have a good start. I haven't had any luck so far with mine. So keep us posted.

Have you read this thread?

Good luck with those. btw, let's remember that what was called M. velutina is more correctly named Musa dasycarpa.

I've got some dasycarpa seeds, got some good germination from them too.

I think you are doing the correct thing, but whenever I've used sterile soil a fungus grows like nothing else on the soil, it must be from my fingers or something. So I don't bother with the sterile soil anymore.

And what ever Tog says add another 3 weeks on top of that, he's living in some kind of utopia :ha: no offence Tog.

I wish they would have kept the velutina name. I'm used to that, and I like it better too! :lurk:

James, vacate whoever is least popular from your household and keep a stove going in that room 24hrs like the old Victorian time stove room which they use to grow orchids. :ha: Betcha will get good results.

Yep, agree totally. Pains me to call it some daisycrappa thingy.

Thanks everyone for the inspiring support and confidence, I will keep you all posted. My Helens Hybrid is doing exceptionally well at the moment, whilst still only a baby, it has trebled in over the past couple of weeks.:2623:

I've gotten seeds for these three different times now from different places. I soak them in a 1:10 solution of bleach or 1t/1gal physan 20 for 10 minutes before planting them. The first batch must have been good seeds. I got like 30/50 and they came up right away. Ever since then the seeds I've gotten have been like 1 or 2/50. But the presoak takes care of the fungus usually.
