View Full Version : Removing Pups?

Okay, so I have a super dwarf cavendish that I've had a little over a month. It's growing quite well (actually about TWICE as fast as my blue java) but keeps trying to send out pups. It's only about a foot tall and I feel like this is just an unnecessary drain on its development at this time. I cut the first one off below the soil to keep the main plant growing faster. It's now sending up another one.

Should I continue removing the pups for a while? Or is it better to just leave them. I want the main plant to grow optimally and to fruit as best as it can. It just seems like leaving them on there is draining nutrients from the main plant, but maybe that's not the case. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks.

http://www.bananas.org/f2/time-separate-pups-spring-1814.html Check out that link.

From what I've read, it's optimum to keep one main plant and 2 pups at staggered heights. Say, one pup half the height of the main plant and the second pup half the height of the first pup.

So basically, just leave the pup on there? That's easy enough to do. Maybe eventually I'll separate it and give it to a friend. It just seems counterproductive to the growth of the mother plant to leave it on there with the plant being so small.

I've got an Ice Cream banana that has two pups on it right now and it's still growing like a freight train. +/- 6' tall to the point where the leaves are coming out and that's less than a year's growth.
