Hi all,

Glad to find this place! Im new here and I live in Southern California in Long Beach area. I wanted to grow the Double Mahoi Banana plant in a smart pot or fabric pot but not sure what size would be best since I plan on keeping it in the container. I was thinking either a 30 gallon or 45 gallon? I was also thinking of growing the Gran Nain but maybe I will just start with one for right now. I have some gardening experience. What size container would be best for the plant?

Thank you,

Just my opinion, but I don't think it'll get rootbound in a 45 gal. My D. Mahoi is almost 3 yrs & is 3ft (2ft P stem) & I just potted up to about 15 gal.
Put lots of perlite around bottom. potting mix has a tendency to get compacted at bottom after awhile & can cause root rot.

For a larger banana plant the minimum size to get fruit would be about 45 gallon, especially if you are growing Mahoe and looking to get fruit on 2 or more blossoms down the road. The larger the pot, the better your chances of getting doubles to bloom and set fruit properly. They would require more food than a single I would imagine.

I have lots of mahoi's they regularly produce double and sometimes triple bunches. I have seen two plants in one trunk and banana buds split in different directions out the top.
I have also seen male buds split after the bananas have formed. The triples usually don't have a good fruit quality.
Mine usually top out at 6 feet.
