I am carrying this on from another thread about damaging critters:
" I just looked at my trap & there's another racoon in there (11:30pm). I really hate this! It's late & I can't do anything till morn."
Normally, they don't hit this early. When I looked out, I saw - I think MAMMA, circleing around the cage/trap trying to figure how to get her baby out. Same thing happened 2 weeks ago...momma came right up to my patio door & actually stood up to look in the windows!!! She went away then like she did now.
This is a smaller one (same as last) compared to momma who's back is as high as the trap!!
I wonder if I''ll catch her. How many more of them? I really don't like this!!
Once, last fall, I left a squirrel tied up in a plastic bag on my back deck & forgtot to put it in garbage. =Next day it was gross. The bag torn open & guts all over. A farmer friend said the racoons did it. Mkes me wonder... what if I fell asleep on deck...would they try to eat me alive????!!! I'm afraid to go out at night!! Esp now w/ baby in cage/trap. I'll wait till am.

we put a mouse in a jar ( with holes poked in the lid the cat caught it and i just couldnt kill it) and put it on the front porch...well, we rushed out the house to get everyone to school and work....but by the time we got home it had exploded in the jar. i felt sooooo horrible. the poor little thing. so memo to anyone living in ga.......dont leave a mouse in a jar, in 90+ degree weather.

Hiya Patty, I totally forgot about replying to your thread. So what was the situation?
I worked alot with wild animals in the past and I would like to add my 2 bits here. Coons are smart and intelligent animals like the monkeys. These smart animals go a long way to protect their own and their turf. This is what you should do, protect your turf by bashing them. This is not cruel, they get worse in their own fights, blood and all.

Have someone with you when you do it. Use a strong broom or something like that which can hit them hard and not get broken and yet not injure them. Also have some scented stuff like a mild shampoo around. You can pour the shampoo onto the broom before you hit them. It's like them using their scent gland to mark territory. You can pour a bit of the shampoo around your yard to let them know you own it. After being thrashed a couple of times, they will be intelligent enough not to come around especially if they can smell your presence (ie the shampoo).

I had a big monkey problem in my old neighborhood and they kept coming into the neighbors' house to steal things like wallets, food and wreak havoc. Before they got to my place I made it a point to chase them like hell and bare my teeth at them at the same time. I threw stones and sticks and drove my car very close to them and hitting my side of the door at the same time. In short, I terrorized them to the point they didn't want to have anything to do with me.

Thanks Tog. Good point. Animals can be very territorial. These coons think they own the whole east side here! Couple have been seen walking down Brady street (2 blocks away)- lots of bars, shops & people etc, & they look at you like "what the hell are you looking at?" To be honest, I'd be afraid to go out & hit on them although I'd love to. I hear that if they are cornered, they will attack. But with 2 ppl, might be different story. These guys weigh 20 - 28 lbs....that's BIG!
Since March 20th, I trapped 3 - so far this year. Haven't seen any possum.
Ya know, they only come out at night & everytime I look out, I really don't see them unless they are in trap. I just might try the broom thing if I do. Maybe throw rocks at it to keep a distance (I'm a good shot - I played softball:)).
Someone suggested antifreeze. Sounds like a cruel way to die but we are overpopulated with these critters. I am not worried about them having it in their system & poisoning other animals. Nothing around would EAT them. Dogs would put up a fight & then we have to worry about rabies if bitten. So, I did put a dish of antifreeze out there. If anything would eat a dead raccoon, it would be one of them. You shoulda seen what they did to a dead squirrel!
When I see these things close up, I'm amazed at how big their teeth & claws are! They have very strong legs too. oooooh, shivers.
Monkeys have strong arms too. I wouldn't want to deal with one of them esp after hearing bout the chimp that ripped off the face of owners friend! Do you think the monkey would win in a fight w/ a coon?
..Almost forgot "situation". They are eating everything in my garden. I originally wanted to trap squirrels for doing so much damage & ended up trapping a total of 73 squirells, 15 raccoon & 11 possum since last June. Last summer I actually got to eat grapes & raspberries & had no broken plants later in summer. I didn't even know this many raccoon & possum were around here.

Another way is this, if you get one in a trap, make sure it's really secure, like cable tie the door and then...whack the sh#@ out of it. Kick it around, shake it, drop it as many times as you can without the critter getting out. Make sure you spray the mild shampoo on it. Then let it off with a big ruckus. It will think twice about coming back and it will also remember the scent. I won't really kill these critter cos they are just trying to co-exist with us. But what I do to them will make them avoid humans and death.

Monkeys here are very nasty especially the Short Tailed Macaques, Maccaca nemestris. You know the ones which goes up to pluck coconuts. The male adults are the size of a young child with long sharp fangs and very powerful. I don't think the coon can stand a chance against it. It's like a medium sized Anubis Baboon.

Let me tell you something crazy I did long ago ;
I was the consulting Curator of a Reptile Park and they had this medium size Short Tailed Macaque which got too wild for the petting zoo. It is aggressive and not scared of anybody and was tied away in a quiet corner of the park. One day I was playing with it and it bit my hand. I was so pissed, I wrestled it and had both its hands behind it back and I bit it back repeatedly on its face and in between I bared my teeth at it.
What I did was very simian, I attacked like they did with their teeth and on their most sensitive part. After that incident it treated me like God! But....after I bit him on its face, well....I had diarrhea for a couple of days! You know how unhygienic they are. :ha::ha::ha::ha::ha:

ill tell u what if u hit that coon and dont kill it your gonna be in a world of hurt they are very mean and they will come after you especially if they have babies and they can really tear some **** up plus u will have to go to the hospital and get tested for rabies i would just trap them and shoot them or dround them like u are doing i seen coons kill big dogs already people around me use dogs to hunt them like they do bear and most of the time if the dogs dont tree them right away one coon will take on the whole pack and tear the dogs up bad and kill at least one or two in the process just watch out they will stand there ground they wont run from u!!!!

Tell you guys something which may sound like some stupid joke. Coons are sold here as pets and they cost like $800 a head. Stupid rite?

I know some dumb people who bought them and tamed them and then got badly bitten later. Some had the coon eating the smaller pets in the house.

To me, an animal is an animal and you gotta to treat it like one. Try to be humane till you can't take it anymore. I guess the PITA folks will take us to court for this thread. It will be nice to see them trying to remove a lean mean hungry coon!

Chironex
04-10-2009, 10:56 PM
Have you ever heard them fight? OMG, it sounds like wildcats! That's the problem, too. People find them so cute and unassuming, but in reality, they are rabies carriers, ferocious and multiply rapidly. Around the city they live in the sewers and storm drains. And opossums are right behind them.
They get into trash cans and get garbage strewn all over, they can destroy insulation in garages (homeowner's policies do not cover damage by animals) and have no redeeming value. They are cute, that's about all I can say for them. It's a problem that is becoming worse and worse. I had neighbors feeding the darned things on their back porch. Now there are dozens of them. Glad I moved.

Jeff, I heard it's illegal to bring them elsewhere. I don't think I'd want a live coon in my car even if in a trap. I heard of one instance where they got themselvs out locked in a trap!

J, I was hoping you'd chime in. I know there are animal lovers out there who are disgusted with me, but I really do love animals. I am learning to hate the critters in my yard though. I don't think I could shoot a deer -- they aren't a problem for me. If they were, I would.
J is right about coons here...they are vicious and will attack anything getting in their way. ESP if babies.
I think the diff between here & where Tog lives is there is a much bigger area for them there. I think they 'proclaimed' my yard as theirs during nightime & allmost everyone has dogs so that will discourage them from making that yard their home. I have a pond & garden in summer & my dog died 4-5 yrs ago so his scent isn't there anymore.
I've seen them around for several years but never a problem till now & there are just too many! They are at Mike's town but there is room for them there.
Jeff, if you saw one of the coons here layed out on their bellies, you'd see them as 'not-so-cute' with their big sharp teeth & big paws/claws & muscular legs. They can climb a tree as fast as a monkey. Very powerful front arms!
Yes, Tog, they should have a chance to live but not here - in my yard doing the damage they do.
I think it's interesting that the bigger a 'critter' is, the more ppl want to protect it. Now, MICE..everyone has no problem killing them. Cockroaches? Oh HELL! Get rid of them. But, the bigger the pest the cuter they are for some reason. I'm sorry, but possum are very ugly to me. They look like big pink rats! Some ppl think they're cute! I used to think squirrels were cute...I used to feed them out of my hand when I moved here, but then I saw the damage they did.
I like fishing but I keep fish in my pond & used to breed angel fish. I love fish but I kill & eat them too. So, go figure.
Sorry to all other animal lovers but my 'critters' gotta go!

O M'gosh Tog, I'll send you coons for $200.00!!! I could be rich by now!
I was 'humane' for years untill last year when "I couldn't take it anymore".
I knew a guy in the boonies a few years ago who adopted a family of coons when momma got hit by a car. He kept one in his house! It hid all day but he'd find poop & everyone thought he was nutso - & he WAS. When it got big something happened (he wouldn't say) & he put it outside. Not a good pet to have!

This is the trouble with a country where there's so much about ethics and what not. Do you hear about happens over here? Nada? Does China ever have any pest problem? Nada? All pests have big problems over this part of the world. They get on the menu!

When we had the Vietnamese people coming in as imported work force, dogs started to disappear in the suburban areas. When they work in the rural areas, monitor lizards and snakes started to go.

In Thailand when the insects became plentiful during the harvest, their govt didn't hand out insecticides, they put up an ad campaign in the press and TV on the the food value of the insects and they were all eaten off. Now the people look forward to the coming of these pestilence as it's chow time. I have tried the fried grasshoppers, very yummy. If you were to close your eyes and have one in your mouth, it taste exactly like fried anchovies. Those people even eat the huge paddy rats. It's seems they are real good. I didn't have a chance to have a go for it yet.
Sorry, folks of the US of A, only way is to let the Asian in and let them sort it out. :ha::ha::ha:

Scot if you are real curious about these kind of stuff, go to Kwang Chow. It is a madhouse for this type of food. The Cantonese are notorious in their creativity in cooking all sorts of you can't imagine.

I've something for you from Sarawak - Fermented Wild Boar Meat aka 1) Dead (Very dead) meat, 2) Eat it and you are dead and not moving! I haven't tried it but even my friend who works with the aborigines won't go near it.
It is actually in our sense, rotting meat. It is fermented by a type of hill rice. Smells exactly like rotting dead animal. The indigenous people eat it in the bush with rice.
I have tried the Balut from Philippines when I was there, ya know, duckling in the egg aka the eggs with legs? No big deal though.

Tog, nothing you have eaten would surprise me LOL. I bartended enough to not let anything surprise me. I wonder if you ate raccoon? To some ppl here, they LOVE it...esp black people. Black ppl here & pple down south love to eat squirrel & coon.
My girlfriend owned a bar & had a Wild Game Feast one year. The guys made dishes of their hunted game & the girls made all the side dishes.
We ate...you ready?...
Antelope, venison (deer), elk, moose, buffalo, rabbit, squirrel (yup, I did!), pheasant, ostrich & I forget what else. If anyone made coon I will throw up now if they tell me. Most were roasted in slow cooker & some (ground antelope, ground ostrich & ven. steaks) were made on the grill. Gotta say, nothing tasted bad.
J, I hear I could sell coon & squirrel tails but can't do that. Me no touch 'em!
There is a squirrel in trap right now! # 74

I got two quarts of Jaboticabas off my tree and gave them to family, then the rest of the crop was eaten by a Racoon. He broke a few small limbs getting to the fruit. He even ate the ones that were not completely ripe. I'm going monday and buying a live trap or two.:2750:

I am going to follow your lead Patty and get maybe a small one for the bushytailed tree rats (squirrels). Cold blooded predators don't survive long in residential areas, and I don't eat Racoon or Bushy-tailed tree rats. :2239:

Caloosa, now that the coon had a taste of your fruits it will be back - w/ family! Get a trap large enough to trap a coon - they don't cost much more than a small one.
If you relocate it/them, make sure you go further than 20 miles or it'll be back. And, tie trap up with wire so he can't get out while you're driving!!!!!
If you have a pond, it is the quickest & painless way to get rid of them.

No fermented wild boar for this connoisseur, man! Although, I've had wild boar tapa - dried, thinly sliced wild boar meat, pan fried or cooked over charcoal.

The "Balut" is an incubated duck egg that is cooked before hatching. Though recently, merchants have been using chicken eggs for the same purpose because they have a shorter incubation period and more readily available. But they are not as tasty. If you really want to try some, I can send you some. I think I still have your address. Let me know for sure. Anybody else?

Yes I did. I made freinds with people at one of the local sushi bars here. Since I'd been going there with a couple of friends for years of course we became freindly with the staff. Actually it was a Malaysian woman who used to make them , they weren't on the menu but we were lucky to get lots of stuff like that. She was transfered to another area . OK, I'm normally quite a tolerant person, but GOOD LORD. J, I'm sure you're not learning disabled, so would you PLEASE try forming complete sentences, checking your spelling, and punctuating properly? It doesn't take a whole lot longer than this horrid little screed, but it makes me (and a number of other people here who are more polite than I am) less likely to completely disregard everything you post. I recognize that the American school system is completely inadequate and that you may not have been taught the fundamentals of grammar, but there are enough good examples right here on this board to learn from.

Thank you.

I don't know about parboiled unborn baby ducks (ewwww.) I guanta add something of my own here, given that Ecuadorean cuisine is sometimes odd....

Grilled palm grubs on a bed of watercress anybody? They're amazingly tasty.

I have been wanting to try those. Just can't seem to find any good ones here, or that are so small that they fall through the grill. :ha:

Hmmm... Crickets fondue (in chocolate), Caiman (it was him or me), the aforementioned palm grubs, Lemon Ants (raw), Popcorn Termites (tastes like peanuts), Konjac jelly noodles, Haggis (never again).

My favourite dishes, however, are a tad more mundane. I'm particularly fond of goat, marinated for two days in pilsener beer, then slow roasted with achiote paste.

Another squirrel in trap...2nd this week and 2 last week. I thought I got rid of the coons, but something turned the trap upside down and sideways to get at the squirrel last night. Only thing to do this would be a coon.

Maybe I should leave squirrel in trap for bait!

Patty, if I had your coon problem I'd turn it in to a lot of fun. Why not hunt them like a leopard? Leave a baited trap(live squirrel or otherwise) out at night set yourself up in a nearby hiding spot having bathed with unscented soap or better yet using a scent shield type spray for bow hunters. Have either a small light on it or better yet one rigged that you can gradually turn up to high simulating the moon. Get the raccoon in your sights and nail it with a high powered break open air rifle...............aaaaah good times (and you don't have to endure an 18 hour flight).

If you hadn't guessed the economic crisis prevented me from going back there for a Buffalo hunt.

Patty in Wisc
04-16-2009, 01:49 PM
Fun idea Bob! I won't have to go thru all that work though. If moon is not full, I'll leave lite on at back door & all I have to do is open the door & shoot. They just look at me (when I've done this before) like "what are you looking at". Last month I shined a flashlite out at one that was circleing the trap w/ a coon inside. I turned it off & that sucker came right up to the door & looked in window on his hind legs!! I woulda shot him but my pellet gun is not working & I really don't think a 22c pellet would do much. Mike is thinking of buying me a 22 gun.
BTW, the squirrel in trap is dead. They seem to go for them when they're dead. The trap is set & I gotta go away for 2 days. I'm sure it'll be ugly when I return.
Last summer I left a squirrel tied up in plastic bags outside on deck & forgot to put it in garbage cart. Next day the bag ripped open, squirrel parts all over the deck - stomach ripped open ...it was gross!
So that is my food chain here : sq eat my fruit & veggies, coon eat squirrel, me kill coon.
Where you go Buffalo hunting? Montana - Wyoming? We only have buffalo farms here.

No I was scheduled to go on an African Cape Buffalo (meanest animal on earth next to the common shrew)hunt and the money I had "saved" for years dissapeared with the market. Funny thing the day I called My Professional hunter(what they call a guide in Africa) Jarred had advertised some of his plants and I bought an African Rhino Horn from him figuring it was fate. Even talked to him on the phone a while that day after getting a deer with the bow(September). Well as fate turned out at least I stiill have the plantain. So thats my inspiration for planning your"hunt".

Possum tastes like Cuy, which tastes kind of like rabbit. It's a bit stronger, though.

The basic recipe is to peel and gut them, then soak them in aguardiente and garlic for about 5 or 6 hours, and slow-roast over charcoal.

Wha-a-a-at???? You never heard of anyone eating possum? You probably thought that the Beverly Hillbillies were just a caricature of mountain rural south/Appalachia. But there is some truth to the epicurean references in that show, and I can assure you that there are parts in the South where the possum is indeed a delicacy, just like the armadillo. Although in most of Texas, the armadillo is definitely considered a pest. But then, in some places in Texas, the peccary is considered a pest, too. Go figure.

I've been told that possums taste more like pork.

O m'gosh, I didn't know ppl eat armadillo! They look like possum w/ shells on.

Yup! Just like turtles, only the underside of the armadillo is regular furry skin. And it's another one that I've been told tastes like pork. You guys think that's exotic? How about monitor lizard? I've tried some when I was too young (10 or so) to know any better. Now, that one tastes like chicken. I remember when I was in college, while roaming the area behind the American Battle Monument hunting for dove, we stumbled on a monitor lizard and it ran up a tree.

Normally, when you stumble on one like that, they play possum (no pun intended). This one decided to run and go up the next tree. It must have sensed that the "stick", that my friend was carrying, was a 22 rifle. LOL. Anyway, my friend shot it and grazed its head. Instead of falling, one of the claws hung on to a tree branch and it dangled there for a while, while we waited for it to fall. When it wouldn't fall, we shook the branch until it finally did. The grasping motion is apparently a reflex action, and stayed in that position, even though it was knocked out. Well the fall knocked him out some more and gave us a chance to tie his legs behind his back before he regained consciousness.

We sold it to the owner of a Chinese restaurant for a carton of cigarettes. The guy was so happy! But we avoided that restaurant from then on.

I'm sure this'll wake Tog up. He was into lizards before! Come on, Tog! Tell us some more about monitor lizard stew! The one I had when I was 10, it was roasted. Not the whole thing, but in slices.

Chironex

Yep, you woke me up Chong!

Firstly, the taste and texture of the monitor lizard is between chicken and beef. It is very tasty. Very nice cooked anyway, curry, braised or stewed. Lots of meat to chew on. It has no game smell and need not be nulled by herbs. On top of this, it is a sure cure for eczemas. I used to buy freshly slaughtered carcasses for friends who want to rid of their itchiness! Max 3 meals of it and all goes off. The species best for this is the Water Monitor, Varanus salvator.

Secondly about the motor reflex of the monitor mentioned by Chong; Did you guys know that the Sand Monitor, Varanus griseus, from India was used to win a war?
What the soldiers did for a night assault was tie a rope around the pelvic area of the monitor and they threw it over and into the fort. The critters will then find a place to lodge themselves. Once the rope is taut, the assailants climbed into the fort and took the occupants by surprise. This is a true story. Another use of these critters are by burglars to get into houses using the method above. Mention Monitor lizard to an Indian national and he will talk about burglary and the fort assault.

Don't ever let a monitor lizard bite you. If you get bitten, don't struggle, it will only hold on tighter. Bear the pain and put a black cloth over its head and wait for it to let go. It usually takes half an hour to 45 mins.

Possum tastes like Cuy, which tastes kind of like rabbit. It's a bit stronger, though.
The basic recipe is to peel and gut them, then soak them in aguardiente and garlic for about 5 or 6 hours, and slow-roast over charcoal.

Go slow on eating Possums, it is a big time carrier of many diseases. Not a joke. Came to know about it during my animal days. I was against the import of this critter into M'sia as a pet. If you want to eat it, overcooking is safer.

lorax
04-21-2009, 09:17 AM
I think that the point of soaking a Huanchaka in aguardiente (which is a neat sugarcane spirit that starts at 100 proof and goes up from there) is to kill the nasties. Then it gets roasted for the better part of the day until it's all blackened and scorched on the outside and the meat under that falls off the bones.

Patty -- Armadillo is also very tasty, and I'll agree with Chong, it's a bit like pork, but not really. We use it in stews down here.

We have woods off to the side of me - across a stream
I have seen 1/2 dozen deer in the woods
They saw me - so I crouched down - bad idea
They thought I was a predator & started pawing the ground
Didn't charge me but they slowly moved away
I was verifying my escape path

Since then I have put in a 6' tall fence w/door on that side of the garden. This borders my pool area = whole area enclosed with a fence. They could leap the fence & get in, but oince it grows in its a jungle. Plus there is roicky uneven footing on the other side

I have seen a family of raccoons in the yard
2 foxes running across the road

I caught what I believe to be boat-tailed grackle in a live catch trap right on the Panama canal. There were two females inside, and 1.7 billion on the fence behind it. I couldn't get close enough to release them until dark because the others were trying to protect the trapped ones. It was like watching "The Birds" in real life.

You don't keep squirrels out, short of shooting or trapping them. Just as you don't keep monkeys out; I refuse to shoot or trap them, and they have their own banana plants.

Bunnies!
I've had good success with fresh hibiscus shoots in my live traps; squirrels won't touch 'em, but they're like bunny kryptonite.

Then again, I rarely have to do anything about bunnies here. The Puma is an effective deterrent.

We have (usually) chipmunks too
But we also have red-tailed hawks
So the squirrel & chipmunk population are kept in check

A chipmunk was stuffing his cheeks with seeds

I haven't seen a single bunny in over 5 years

To clarify- I wasn't asking for a bait for the traps, but a more lethal variety. I know they don't sell bunny busters but thought maybe a toxic bait for another rodent could be used instead with success. Patty, these littele Bugs just hop around my marigolds! Shopgirl, I am not into torture...I have not used antifreeze. There is no other way to keep squirrels out. I used to shoot them but my neighbor would call police on me - and it is more painful than drowning. I had a dog that caught & killed them but if I was a squirrel, I'd rather drown.
Years ago I thought they were cute till they ate holes in my eaves & damaged anything growing in my garden.
I have plants & trees growing for 4-5 yrs now & getting their first blossoms. I will NOT let a squirrel destroy them.
I will protect myself & my property with whatever it takes. If a burglar came in my house I wouldn't hesitate to shoot - if I had a gun, and that would be harder to do.
Speaking of....... just over 2 yrs ago I was burgled while I was home in bed sleeping. All he wanted was my purse (thank God)- which he got. It had EVERYTHING in it. All my keys, c cards etc. He was a crack head. What would he have done to me if I woke up & faced him? He was caught 3 weeks later & confessed. He got 5 years.
I say, do what you have to do to protect yourself & your property.

Trap was set but no bait - DARN. He saw me & climbed over fence. I put bait in (pnut butter on piece of bread) & he was in it about 1 hr later.
That makes 2 this week - 18 total.

Raccoon #20 this morning. The biggest this year so far. I looked out & the trap was gone! it got moved about 15 ft to the left. He could not move it himself from inside, so his family or buddies musta tried saving him & actually dragged it. I wish I had a video of it. This tells me there's more out there.
So heavy, I had a hard time tossing it in pond. It wasn't in all the way -he poked his nose out, so I pushed it in further & I felt his hand touch mine to grab it. That just scared the heck outa me. How he got his arm thru the flap, I don't know, but if he grabbed my hand or finger, he wouldn't have let go till he drowned. They are very strong. WHEW- that was scary! He weighed 23 lbs
Someone recently told me it's coons that love grapes. They took every one of mine 2 yrs ago - & I blamed it on squirells. I still have squirells digging into & knocking over my pots, so the war is still on.

Wish I could do that but I can't. I cannot even touch them. I line a bucket w/ plastic bag & open trap & let them slide in bag & I tie it up. I can help my brother dress & skin a deer & clean my own fish, but that's all. :(

OK guys, I picked up a big bag of hair from my Mom's hairdresser, and scattered it around the plants I want to save from rabbit nibbling (those that are left, that is). An unforseen problem arose; those clumps of hair are drawing flies like crazy. I guess I'll take flies over bunnies; at least the flies don't eat the plants (just us!). Any suggestions on "de-flying"?

That's funny Howard...you get rid of a pest & adopt another :)
There must be something in the hair to attract them. Hair spray? I'd spray the hair w/insect/fly spray.
BTW, came home yesterday to find a dead coon in the trap (#22). It was set but no bait in it. It prolly died of thirst as I was gone for a few days. Whole trap was moved again so there was another one trying to get this one out of trap. Where are they coming from!!?? No sign of possum though...didn't trap one for awhile.

BAKED STUFFED RACCOON WITH APPLES
Printed from COOKS.COM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 med. raccoon
4 lg. onions
4 strips salted pork
2 c. beef stock

STUFFING:

5 lg. tart apples
2 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. dry bread crumbs
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

Skin and clean the raccoon. Wash well and remove most of the fat. Place in a large soup kettle, cover with water and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
Peel, core and dice the apples into a mixing bowl. Melt the butter in a small saucepan and add the cinnamon, bread crumbs, salt and pepper; mix well. Remove the raccoon from the cooking juices and cool. Stuff the raccoon and sew up the cavity. Place the raccoon, breast down on the rack of a roast pan, with the legs folded under the body and fasten with kitchen string. Drape the salt pork over the back of the raccoon and fasten with toothpicks. Place the onions beside the raccoon on the rack.

Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes to brown the meat. Reduce temperature to 325 degrees and add the 2 cups of beef stock. Cook for 1 hour, basting as often as possible. Transfer to a heated platter surrounded by the whole onions.

Gone for 3 days & look what I came home to yesterday. This is a 8 gal tall tree pot...he musta climbed the tree & it fell over.

I hear that.. Before this last season (fall 09) I had not gotten much a morsel from the pecans. I started my counter Oct. 15, 08 and I think between my 6 trees I have gotten 7.5-8 bushels.. Once I hit 6.5 bushels I was giving them away (2.5 bushels to the food bank). :^) I was planning(08) on getting almonds then so I had to do something. Uh oh, something is living under my sunroom crawlspace again or still. I was shoveling & saw odd prints in snow to my side gate. It climbed over gate & I followed prints to under my sunroom in back. It's about 18" high but I didn't want to look under LOL. That was about 1pm & prints were kinda fresh. Don't possum & coons sleep all winter? The tracks were about as big as a golf ball (& round like one) & were about a foot apart length-wise so each step about 1 ft. Cats don't make long steps like that. I know it wasn't a dog. What do ya think? Any guesses?
The last squirrel I trapped is still in trapp...frozen to it, & I can't get him out yet, but I'll have to reset it close to where the opening to crawlspace is.

Patty in Wisc
02-10-2010, 02:13 PM
Many of us don't have garaage or driveway so there are signs posted across street "no parking during snow emergency or 4 inches snow". So, for many years, I've seen cars not moved but never got a ticket. Supposed to be so the plows can plow that side & once they do, then we can park there so plows can get at this side. So, it got plowed about 1pm & I moved my car there about 3pm. It was still snowing but I got a $40.00 ticket at 5:12 pm -- snow emergency was in effect but IT WAS ALREADY PLOWED. Go figure! By then it only had about 2 inches - not 4! Rule is, once it's plowed, it's legal to park there. I'm not paying it cuz he wrote my plate # wrong - ending with GSH & it's really GSP ha ha.
Parking is always a problem around here (east side). One time in 80's, ppl couldn't or wouldn't move their cars during snow Em., so P.D. got a towing Co. to tow them. It was on news showing cars piled on top of each other at the tow lot when they ran out of room to put the cars. Some were brand new, like mercedes - didn't matter. Some were stacked 3 -4 cars high - crushed & dented. Oh, LOTS of angry ppl, & I think they sued the city! Now, when a house burns down or torn down, ppl buy the property & make parking lots, & all new condos & houses are required to provide offstreet parking.
oh yeah, I got plowed in early this am like about 6-7 so there was more snow by then, but when I got ticket yest., I was legal.

Actually the law is until the snow emergency is lifted
As long as the snow prediction is there & the snow emergency has been declared they can ticket you
Better check that the ticket was not issued electronically correctly & he just wrote the number on the ticket wrong
In Boston they punch it into a computer, then manually write the ticket
Some are now automatically generated by the handheld device & it prints the ticket after the person is finished entering info

They had a snow emergency declared around Boston & other cities one year
Well the storm missed completely, so people parked again
Well the Police (meter maids ?) went & ticketed like 1500 cars
People were outraged

We've been having trouble with a feral kitten for months and finally caught her in a live trap. She sealed her place here when we saw that our two half blood Great Pyranees were sharing their dog houses with her. She belongs to them now so we've had her in our bathroom and bedroom working on taming her enough to get her spayed. We're sort of there. At least enough for the Vet to accept working on her. Her appt. is on Monday and I'll be so glad when it's over, she's healed and can go back out with her dogs.

Domestic houses cats that have gone wild from human neglect. It's a problem out here. Most of the people around here just don't have any regard for animal welfare unless it's livestock that can actually provide food or money for them. Dogs fare a little better but even some of them are either running with or on the outskirts of coyotees around here off and on.

When I moved here we had a lot of stray cats. Maybe they run off from their homes to chase a squirrel & then got lost. One neighbor used to set food out for them & another neighbor had a litter of kittens in a clothes pin bag LOL. Everyone seemed to like them cuz there was no mice or rats anywhere around LOL. I don't know what happened to them...maybe killed off by severe winter & starving or the humane society took them in. I once found a dog sleeping in my yard & tried to be friends w/ it but it was so afraid of humans...maybe abused? I threw food out to it but could not get near it, he would not come near me to get the food. It started getting cold so I called H. society & they set up a live trap & took him to their shelter.

Good job!! I don't know what you husbands would do without wild life to chase! One time we got so frustrated with a wild, male cat beating up our cats that I finally agreed to the BB gun. Nail guns are scary! They make them now so you have to push the tip against the wood & then pull trigger...they won't go off if you just pull trigger. I just used one last week.
There was a guy on news 10-20 years ago, he smashed his hand (or something) & was in so much pain that he shot himself in head with about 8 nails from his gun to make the pain in his hand feel better!! It's crazy but true story. They showed xrays of his head w/ the nails in it LOL.

I wish my neighbors would help out controlling the bushy tail rats! They just feed the birds and that feeds the rats. You gotta watch out when those suckers are working on the big green pine cones in those tall trees--one guy at work was knocked out cold by one that dropped a pine cone on him--he looked up just before it hit him right across the top of his nose--he had a dozen little scratches from his forehead to his cheek!

Once it dry's out (if that happens) I'm getting rid of my last one in the yard.. Then I get to cut down the neighbors pine (something in the works) :^) His is where I see plenty of squirrel action..

I wish I could get one to sit or situp and be still.. Or Take the time to laugh.. lol cause that's all the time I need to pop'em.. Squirrels see me and haul; I'm like what did I do? Most of the talking they do to me is all the chatter I get when I get them in the wrong end!

I get a lot of them sitting still--hugging a big pine limb like the bark with just about a 1/4 inch of their head showing--a few of them died thinking they were safe like that. I like to get them sitting up chewing on that pine cone--right between the eye and the ear!

Lol that reminds me of the 2nd one I shot yesterday, thinking he was safe just like you describe till I shot him w/ the beeman... Then he was flying in circles like a hovercraft till he hit the ground. He didn't have the luxury of hauling after the fall this time :^) Of course there was a couple that didn't have a (couple) rear organs after being shot. That definately helps the cleaning process :^)

"Hubby was hurrying so fast; the BB ricocheted off something and wizzed past my head,"
Oooh, always look at what's beyond your target in case you miss.

I use the 12 degree rule on all sides of a target. Then nobody or no property can get hurt/damaged. I like having wood (tree) backstops too.. :^) the bark is soft enough to absord a pellet or 22 bullet & its surely not going thru a tree.

LOL, do we hate those tree rats or what? Just think how many there'd be if not for us. I wonder too...where'd they all come from?
When my dog was around, & if he saw a squirrel in yard, he's spin around & scream to go out. Well, by the time he got out (still screaming) the squirrell would be a block away. He did catch & kill some but only if he was out & looked up & saw one, then he'd dart after it without the screaming. Sometimes I'd shoot one & let him out to finish it & he'd be so proud...thinking he did it all by himself LOL. He would actually look at me & smile :)

LOL, do we hate those tree rats or what? Just think how many there'd be if not for us. I wonder too...where'd they all come from?

When we first moved here there were no tree rats--when the first ones showed up we thought they were cute! We used to feed birds then, but the tree rat population expolded--they started digging up everything I planted and eating my fruit! At one point, I counted 20 in my backard at the same time--that is when I declared war! The first yr I killed over 60, now I only get a dozen or so a yr--some in traps, but that is getting hard to do too.

When I moved here, it was a thrill to get one to eat out of my hand in the yard. Then I heard them in kitchen under the attic floorboards! They ate a hole in my soffit & had a nest up there. I got a new roof on & we 'evicted' them (aluminum soffit - they won't eat thru it) & then it was war -esp just before that when they ate my garden.
I trapped 5 in one day once & it was a lot of work...giving each one a 'swim lesson' & resetting trap. I have to shoot from an open window in sunroom & make sure my bad neighbor is not home or he'll call police. I bought some new pointy pellets instead of the flatter ones. Can't wait to try them out.

Glad I don't have a bad neighbor. I used to shoot them out of my bird feeder--but I had to slip out onto the porch with out them seeing me--now that is near impossible--my Lab goes crazy when I pick up the gun! I can't slip up on anything! The good thing is she will watch for them and come get me--then I let her out and she makes sure the go up the big pine tree--but, it can be hard to find them if I don't keep my eye on them--they can dissapear on top of a big limb or into a cluster of pine cones.

Some of those air rifles can get up w/ regular gun prices. I think Gamo has one out that shoots 1650 fps ($549) w/ pba ammo.. I used that stuff in mine which made it sound like a 22, but if there is a crosswind a shot of any distance is useless (cause the ammo is all aluminum alloy). I like the Gamo ammo that has the copper bee-bee u front and lead jacket (looks like those pointy pellets almost) this has been my most reliable ammo. I have an old 2x4.5 shotgun scope on mine; works pretty good.. I had a daisy pump that died. I liked the old crossman's but the new one's you can't load bee-bee's in the side thing since the hole isn't big enough, and I'm not drilling on a brand-new gun.. So I was forced to buy the beeman (good justification) :^)

They soem cold hardy that say they are good down to 22F but none are the names above. The Duke is a really good root stock! What is grafted to it? I'm going to get a variety, and mainly non-mexican types. Less fat, more creamy. Holland is from the greek isles I see. :^)

Oh that's gut wrenching to have that happen. We've recently adopted a bassett hound that didn't work out for someone and really need to find her a home. She buries her chew bones and is just all around annoying. The nanas and other tropicals are going to be needing to go out soon so I guess we'll need to put a little turkey wire fence around each one until the dog thing is taken care of. I sure don't want to have damage like you went through after overwintering carefully inside!

So sorry to hear about that!! That's a big plant for a dog to tear up!

HS!!! I mean Patty. So sorry.

This is what happens when you post after just waking up in the Am. Or after too many beers later on. Woof!

Some good news - finally caught one of the critters that's been chewing my pole beans, a friggin rat! Been setting a rat trap inside the Havaheart (on the trip paddle) since you never know how big the perp is gonna be. If the smaller trap just knicks him he's still caught. Got a big possum this way and all he had was a sore ear.

The rest of the tale is truly bizarre - went out in AM to check trap and saw a big rabbit dragging the dead rat out of the Havaheart with the trap still attchd by the neck. Were they related, cousins maybe??? Was the rabbit horny and he was checking to see if he was still warm??? Or was he just hungry? You tell me.

It happened a second time. This time it was a bird in the trap. He looked partially chewed on but the chewer wasn't around at the time. Something around here is hungry.

And today saw 6 more newly planted polebean seedlings chewed up. The trap remains ready.

Rabbits are really bad on young tender plants--especially if there is not much other food around. As for the rabbit eating the rat--if the carcass was down to bones, it may have been trying to eat the bones for calcium--all sorts of animals will gnaw on bones and antlers for the calcium.

A couple years ago, I had a problem so bad I could not get a single winter plant to grow--everything was eaten to the ground as soon as it was planted.
I had a fence around the garden, but one side was the barn--I suspected a pack rat, but it is possible that rabbits were getting thru the fence some way.

Hey Dan, I wonder if it's a possum. They ate a leg off a squirrel that was dead in my trap... thru the cage. That or raccoon. Try peanut butter for bait...they love it.
Birds or bunnies are getting your bean seedlings.

I was pulling weeds in back the other day & almost touched a baby bunny just sitting still. I jumped from surprise & it wouldn't move. I went inside & cut up a carrot & put it in front of him. 2 more jumped up in front of me & ran away...scared the hell outa me! Mama musta nested back there... they sure are cute when babies! Now, I gotta trap that big cat that's been hanging out in the garden. I've seen it back there past winter so it must be a stray.

sbl -- I saw a big bunny in the BBQ area a few times. The trap is set and will get him with a little luck.

Patty -- I am doing the peanut butter thing and it works great - thanks! It could be a possum - got one last year using cheese. Meanwhile, the backup seedlings will fill in where the beans got chewed down to a nub. If they had branched out I leave them and new runners will sprout later.

When I was in Vietnam they used to take us out of the field once in a while to support forward firebases for a few days. Those bases were overrun with rats. Sleeping at night was tough with rats running over your chest and legs. Took a beer can and cut out the top lid. I put an electrical blasting cap inside and rigged the trap with food on a string tied to one wire stripped bare. Then attached a small battery. A rat would tug on the food causing one wire to touch the side of the can closing the circuit. Bye bye rat. Rerigged the trap and went back to sleep. One base was so bad, firebase Snuffy, that we were glad to return to the field. Imagine that!

I check the Havaheart trap daily. Afraid the critters in the trap will attract the bobcats.

I have never tried to trap a rabbit--my guess is you will have to try to set the trap in a trail that the rabbit uses--I don't know if you can attract them with bait. You might do better with a sticky trap in the trail --nailed to a board! Of course--the pellet gun will work just fine and rabbits are easy to spot at night with those red eyes!

A precious little girl walks into a pet shop and asks in the sweetest little lisp,
"Excuthe me, mithter, do you keep widdle wabbits?"
As the shopkeeper's heart melts, he gets down on his knees so that he's on her level, and asks,
"Do you want a widdle white wabbit, or a thoft and fuwwy bwack wabbit, or maybe one like that cute widdle bwown wabbit over there?" She, in turn blushes, rocks on her heels, puts her hands on her knees, leans forward and says in a quiet voice,

The SW trellis now has one pole bean vine intact. The freakin rabbits have eaten up the rest. The amazing thing is the SE trellis is perfect. Every vine has reached the top and been pinched off. Beans for dinner soon.

The difference is there is no gap under the SW fence. Gonna try one more time by ringing the planting bed with heavy 1/4" hardware cloth stapled to the fence. Do you guys think 18" high is enough?

None of the 3 traps have produced in the last 2 weeks. Got desperate enough to try bacala (salt cod) for bait along with peanut butter.

My neighbors would definitely report me if I tried shooting the rabbits with an air gun, but something needs to be done. My favorite lilies are eaten before they get 8 inches tall. Forget my baptisias; they are caviar to bunnies. Same with my brugs. So far the only thing that seems to work is human hair brought from the ladies at the hair salon. Keeps them away so far, but it brings the flies in droves. I see them in every size, so I know they're breeding in my backyard, which is enclosed with a wooden fence. I'd love it if they were mowed. Havahart traps didn't work at all. Hate the little buggers.

Michael -- Had friends back in NJ that kept pigs. Helped with slaughtering once. Got a big Durox hung by the hind feet and splayed, and it was the little brothers job to catch the guts when it all got cut loose. It was a big 'ol red Durox, and he fell down backwards when the load hit him. He got up and dumped the load into the pig pen. The squealing noise was deafening.

Long story short, if you think chickens chasing a piece of meat is funny you should see 60 to 70 squealing piglets chasing the ones with a piece of gut. Screaming their brains out. It lasted for an hour.

Salty -- Confirmed - the Havahart does not work on rabbits. Tried apples, peanutbutter and even a chunk of bacala - only caught rats, birds and a squirrel. Searching websites showed the following basic trap that looks like it may work. Components are cheap. Will be looking for a box when done here!

Homemade Rabbit Trap
Whether you are looking for a new pet, dinner, or need to do some rodent pest control, it is important to have a good rabbit trap. It's very simple to make homemade rabbit traps which are humane and fun. The following article will detail how to make primitive yet effective homemade rabbit traps.
Things You'll Need:
* Large Wooden box
* Piece of plywood
* Stick
* String
* Screw hook
* Carrot
Step1
Screw in the screw hook on the inside of the box in the center. This will serve as a pulley mechanism for the suspended carrot later in the process of doing rodent pest control.
Step2
Place the piece of plywood on a flat surface near a place where you have seen the bunnies. This way, they will not have to hunt out the bait. They will wait until your back is turned and take it.
Step3
Prop the box up with the stick so that there is enough room for the bunny rabbit to get underneath it.
Step4
Tie the string to the carrot. The carrot is the bait. You may choose to tie it in several spots so the rabbit does not just eat it without pulling the stick out. Run the string through the hook and out to the stick. Many people are not confident in this form of rodent pest control, but it can actually be a lot of fun.
Step5
Pull the string until the carrot is suspended several inches off the ground. This ensures that they bunny rabbit will have to give it a good tug in order to eat it. Once it is suspended, tie it carefully to the stick.
Step6
Sneak off and wait a bit. When you hear a thud, you might have got your mark. Pick up the plywood and the box together. If you put it on a table, you can easily work the bunny rabbit out and into a pillow case without touching it or hurting it. Then you can let him go somewhere very far away.

Yeah – like Michael’s house!!!

I did have some luck putting mothballs into my flower pots to keep the squirrels from digging in them, wonder if they would work for rabbits, my concern would be using them if small children are around. There are none in my area so...
Joan, I didn't know about the mothballs! And I didn't know they were a danger to kids. I haven't seen M-balls anywhere for a long time. Where do you get them?
My Grandma always stored all winter clothes in M-balls & I could smell them all the time when I was a kid. Is that what made me nuts? LOL :)
Hey Shreck, you keep on w/ those squirrels... I gotta set my trap & see what I get. Hopefully, no more raccoon or possum.

I get them at the Dollar Store and I think you can get them at Menards and Walmart, they melt in the humidity but thats OK only takes a few to a container. :)

My wife said, "They keep snake away". (SsHHhhh Ancient chinese (indian) secret!) lol I think mothballs can make you very sick (looks like sugar), smell like something else. I have some under my deck probably right next to the pygmy rattler (better start eatin' some squirrels or he's fired too) :^)

Well I found a an orangish lookin' Beetle (w/ wings) look alike with black dots on his back, not round but oval from head to tail. He was wearing out a new leaf on what I beleive is an Dwarf Orinoco (I know its not a Raja Puri like its suppose to be). I had to squish him before he took off. :^)
