Keep it on the dry side, if you're in Zone 8b and you're keeping it in a covered porch. At the same time, don't let it dry out completely. The problem with keeping it in a pot is that the soil in the pot is subject to freezing. Or rather, the water in the soil will be subject to freezing when the temps go below 32°F for extended periods. One way to keep the soil from freezing is to provide an enclosure around the pot and put Christmas tree lights between the pot and the enclosure.

Even if frost doesn't form in your porch, if the temperature in the immediate area of the porch stays below 32°F over an extended period, the soil will freeze. You should try placing a shallow tray of water (1/8-inch deep) next to the pot where your banana is, and you will see that the water will freeze after a few hours of below 32°F temperature.
