I did the same thing to a SDC last year. The guy at the nursery said to mix dish soap really strong and spray on the leaves for mites. So I did. Plus I had it in the sun. All the leaves died. But it came back strong as ever. I even pulled off 3 pups later in the year and gave them away. Give em some time and I bet they come right back like mine.

Yeah, bananas are hard to kill. Place them in a warm, sunny room, and I bet they'll be fine. Don't give up until the banana ladyfinger sings!! :ha:

Don't give up! I mix a lot of dishsoap in mine too. I sprayed mine & got a lot in the center w/ new leaf coming out. New leaf is now thin, light green & brown. I guess the soap water just laid in there.
Last summer I sprayed a new small apple tree infested w/ aphids with a strong soap & very hot water mix. All the leaves turned brown & died. I too thought it was a goner but it grew nice green leaves back & was fine.

Don't beat your self up over it. They are very hardy and usually come back. So far this year 3 of my Bajsoo died down to the corm and both of my Dwarf Cavendish...I'm batting about 50% on keeping them alive this winter. all mine that inside lived, and the ones I dug up and put in the crawl-like space are ok. Just givem love and warmth and they should come back.

Definately don't beat yourself up. They'll probably make it. If your going to make your own soap mix make sure it's a non deturgent soap. I just buy it so I don't have to worry. Show me any gardener who hasn't killed a few plants and I'll show you one with not much experience. Let us know how they do.

What will you do once you plant them outdoors and they are at the mercy of the elements? LOL

I thought that was a very serious and legitimate question, and not a "sarcastic responce" ... or maybe it was. Hard to tell with all the dancing bananas.

For future reference, a few drops of dish liquid in a quart of water should be sufficent. Best of luck with your basjoo, they're fast growers and should recover quickly.

Cheers, Barrie.

Well Rob, I dont know what is sarcasm in Rhode Island but I was serious when I said you'll check them twice a day. I often check my bananas when I get home and then again later just looking for new growth or pest or even hopefully catch sight of a flag leaf. I'm sorry if you took offense to that and I will make sure I wont reply to any of your questions as not to offend you in the future.

A number of folks have contacted me about the meaning of QFT.

What is "QFT"? (http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/forumsandlists/f/whatisQFT.htm)

Good job Howard! You are welcome to join the Hijackers anytime! Your membership's approved!

Footnote;
It's really a very friendly site here and as you can see the two who were in reference, no names mentioned, (ok with you Stumpy, Nucci, I didn't mention who you are :ha:) are regular guys here and the regular people here tend to be very friendly and humorous. You should see the rubbing I got from my "naner ID thread for my typo error! Just love the varmints here! Don't you Howard! :ha:

I've found this site (as well as a baseball and an aquarium site I frequent) to indeed consist of many helpful, fascinating and lighthearted folks. While I have learned a lot here, I also feel that I can contribute, and that the community here has my back. BTW, it's no coincidence that bananas.org and aquariumforum.com are both run by Jarred.

Tog- I accept the Hijackers invitation!

Happy spring everyone!
My Musa Basjoo died to the corm this winter and I'm trying to be hopeful that pups will come up soon....how long will that take, does anyone know? I've pulled back the mushroom manure for more sun exposure...not sure if that helps, just trying anything I can. we've had 20 Celsius temps these last few days! SO NICE! Last week I fertilized it with a water soluble 30-10-10. what else should I do to help kick start this guy? What about Epsom salts? I am just praying it's not dead. However, I did buy a new one yesterday for the back yard landscape, so I've got one more on the go for this year! :woohoonaner:

I would think yhat basjoo would not be a problem in Vancouver, seeing that you can grow windmill palms there without much difficulty.I am so envious of that fact. Good luck, I have had some miserable looking ,mushy basjoos pup like mad when they get some warmth and sun on them.

Nucci60 thanks for the encouragement - I'm sure mine will come back up again. Vancouver just saw THE worst winter we've had in 40 yrs, with record breaking temperatures of -17C to even -20C in some areas. The snow we got was just as bad, being 103cm in just 2 weeks in Dec and January. Definitely bad timing for rookie palm buffs such as myself. I also have two 1ft. windmill palms and I'm not sure how they survived until later this spring or early summer. I've spoken to a couple of people who've had bananas for 20 years and this year was the first time they flopped over in their banana jacket - right to the ground. Some lost completely, some still hopeful. I worked so hard last year getting them established and so proud of them, it was quite disappointing.

Heidi ... it would be interesting to see a local map showing the areas and the lows that they got last winter. I know here at my place on Vancouver Island my digital recorded -10.6°C (12.9°F) and most likely colder in the worst parts of the garden.
Late May should produce the best new shoots for your Musa basjoo plants.

Cheers, Barrie.

Hi Barrie,

Thanks for the reply about the future of my banana! :goteam: Should I be feeding it soluble tomato fertilizer every couple of weeks (I heard they love tomato fertilizer!) and some manure to encourage growth?

I looked up some data for you on Environment Canada and found this for where I live in Maple Ridge:

December 2008
Average Daily low -2.5C (27.5F)*
Extreme Daily low -14.5C (5.9F)*
(*note: based on incomplete data)

January 2009
Average Daily low -2.2C (28.04F)
Extreme Daily low -10.OC (14F)

I forgot to mention the -17C I was talking about was wind-chill factor...which reminds me, I read somewhere on this site, a debate about wind-chill and plants vs. humans. What's your take on that?
