Wow, that alpina carolinensis is awesome! I need to find a place to grow that! You sure that's what it's called? I can't find any info on google about it.

If it makes you feel better, take a look at my temps compared to yours LOL. I think I'd really be in state of shock!

. . . . . . . . What is that plant with birght pink flowers coming out & leaves looking like a nanna? . . . . . . . . .

The pink and white ones are Alpinia zerumbet, shell ginger . . . . here are some links:
http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/shell_ginger3.jpg
Royal Palm Enterprises - Alpinia zerumbet, shell ginger (http://www.rpetropicals.com/store/cart.cgi?action=link&product=94&uid=17)
shell ginger - Google Image Search (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=shell%20ginger&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi)

The skinny nana looking ones w/ all pink flowers are heliconias.

Waimea Beach (world class waves during the winter)
Polynesian Cultural Center
Laiea Point
Shark's Cove
Lanikai
Kaena Point (tip of Oahu)
Ala Moana Beach Park (Waikiki, across from Ala Moana Shopping Center)--Park

Take time to explore the windward side (Northside) of the island. Carve out a day, if you can, to drive around the island--away from the noise and hub-bub of Waikiki--and be prepared for the bounteous "secret" beauty of the island. You'll be rewarded with wondrous views at every turn. Simply load your rental with a day's supply of food, water.of course, basic beachy stuff (don't forget mosquito repellant), and point your vehicle northward. The panorama of the Ko'olau, Kaneohe, Waimea, Haleiwa, Kaena Point unfold--sweeping, majestic.

A good map is essential--not the fold-out kind; The Enlarged Edition O'ahu Street and Condo Map, and Driving & Discovering Hawaii: O'ahu, Honolulu & Waikiki by Richard Sullivan are the best sight seeing and touring resources in my mind.

I found both resources during my first visit to Oahu, and planned the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th using both. I've just about covered every mile of Oahu. Top to bottom, makau and makai side, criss-cross over the H1, H2, and H3.

The best shopping finds? I picked up marble-sized tahitian pearls at the Pearlridge farmers' market, in the most beautiful champagne peach color. Nearly perfect. $100 each.

Chinatown in downtown Oahu is a shopper's delight--I shopped fresh picked heliconias, and, yeah, black pearl jewelry. Haggle and dicker over price--they'd think something is wrong if you don't.

I'm going to add an album in my gallery sometime tonight for my Oahu pictures. Check them out for points of interest, must-see locations, and for pictures of heliconia and other orchids I brought back home to SF. The heliconias and others were ordered from growers who sold them at the farmers market for about .25 cents a stalk. :)
