Ok, I found four pups on it and the p-stem is badly desicated but I expect the Main plant to push out soon (high hopes).

I just got my Siam Ruby out of the greenhouse a little while ago to take home for the season. I was too worried it wouldn't make the winter here as it was already having some kind of issue late last summer. Thanks for the photos, Pete!

Fantastic news, Pete!

I have already related that the potted pups of my SR bit the dust. The Mom looked OK in her pot until about a month or so ago, when she just collapsed sideways. Her leaves remain healthy looking, however. I have her propped up against a croton, and surprise, surprise, today I noted 2 new green pups emerging!

Congrad on your pups guys. Salty I know how upset you were when they were crashing. I was at a local green house the other day and he had 8 or 9 SR's and they looked bad. I ask him what happened and he said they just started crashing but were just coming back. It looks like they are pretty darn tuff! I may have to get one! Think it can survive -22? lol

I've observed the same thing. I cut my pseudostem back on my Siam Ruby in the fall and brought it into the greenhouse. The greenhouse was plenty warm and wet, but it just floundered. All of the sudden, in the past two weeks, everything just kicked back into gear. The main pseudostem is pushing leaves again, and all the pups are moving again. Weird? Maybe something to do with the length of day?

My 'Siam Ruby' has also survived the winter and thrown several strong pups, growing fast now. This in a winter-shady area, under a certain amount of canopy. We had 24.1F for a low, 15 hours below freezing. Several other moderate freezes and a number of light frosts/freezes as well. The main stem looked somewhat solid close to the ground but doesn't appear to be pushing. But lots of pups.

I will also add that these pup like wild. I have had 3-4 of the main plants croak, but it just keeps putting out pups. Mine was in an unheated greenhouse this winter and has about 4 pups growing. Hoping it gains some size this year, if I can keep it from roasting in our Vegas sun. I have it in nearly total shade now. Only gets filtered sun for a few hours. Think I will leave it there this summer.

So glad to hear the Siam Ruby might be a tough one. Think I'm not fanantical,
brought mine in house overwinter (yep, listened to husband gripe about it).
It has dropped all the lower leaves, now tall and leggy, has two leaves.
Wondering if I should top it, let it start over on the leaves. Someone please
feel free to advise me.

Marie, just let it be. If there is ay green in those leaves, they are doing their job. Soon the new leaves will take over ad these will fade away anyhow. Then you can cut them off.

How about a May update from Natchez and Northern Louisiana. Any pics of the Siam Ruby now? Has the red returned?

Whats the story on the fruit of this type?

Thanks

Hey y'all.

Just added my Siam ruby as my avitar, I feel so high tech!

Anyway, I was worried about it through the winter and lost about half of the height on the pstems. But it came back and has done just fine here in 8b.

Interestingly, I have had some leaf roller damage too but a little "ortho max" took care of the problem. This is the first time I've had a problem with leaf rollers and bananas, and the reason I don't fool with cannas.

I bet you do have spider mites being so hot and dry! How do you grow bananas in such low humidity - are they happy?
