I have been here since August of 2006, and the price of these has not changed at all. Sometimes you will run across a cheaper one, but basically, that's the price you have to pay...

I don't foresee the price coming down at all in the next few years unless demand decreases due to economy...

Hey!!
You might want to contact one of our very own members..
Martha~ mgmg9495 @ ebay... and see if she has some before you bid.. She has some beautiful healthy plants and she is just dang nice...LOL That is where I got mine as well as many other plants and I could not have been happier with them..

I don't see the prices dropping anytime soon...

Austin If you find one you will probably need to just mail it to yourself or you will have a time getting thru customs... so I hear...

Austin - I don't think you should have a problem bringing them back, provided you comply with regulations. I've been to Hawaii many, many times (around 50) and have brought plants back several times (I don't remember bringing any Musa, though), and there was no problem, if it wasn't something prohibited, and so long as you did what you were supposed to do, like, maybe, washing the soil off the roots, or having the plant sprayed, etc.
Nowadays, almost everyone has a cell phone, or an unlimited long distance plan, so I'd Google Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture, get the number and give 'em a call.

Thanks, John. It's good to know it can be done easily. I'll do just what you recommend! :)

134.50 now. Wonder what it will sell for at end tonight.
I brought plants home on a plane (not from Hawaii though). I put one on floor by my feet & once I put one in the overhead. No problem - no complaints.

I don't believe the market price for Ae Ae will drop anytime soon unless the U.S. (and/or global) economy just tanks completely and we then devote our resources solely to survival!

As it is, some of our members already give away Ae Ae but the supply from such generous people is never going large enough to meet current demand, IMHO.

Scot got one for well below $100 on eBay only because the seller (also a member here) would not ship the large plant. I have never seen another on eBay go for under $100. I did get one for a little over $100 but most go over $150. I watch them all!

So it looks like I am the luckiest 'naner dude on the site with these Ae Ae's. The first 2 which I got as a gift, 1 died cos it was small and got badly crushed by the bigger plants.

Now I am expecting at least another 7 pups from the same chap - as a gift of course. They should be here in the next couple of weeks.

The story is, my friend in Bkk got 1 as a gift and in a short while it became many. He sold quite a few and now he has 15 matured plants with lots of pups. I told him I wanted to buy all the pups he can get but he insisted giving them to me. So I in return, I am giving him all the Variegated Dracaena elliptica I have. Dracaena's are revered as a 'lucky plant' in Thailand. I guess it brought me luck here with the Ae Ae's raining on me. :ha:

There shouldn't be any issues bringing them back, especially if you put them in your checked baggage. You can get them inspected at the airport too if you want to be really safe. In talking face to face with a few different plant quarantine inspectors, I'm under the impression that they much appreciate having them inspected but its not required (though the importing state may have separate rules) and airport security doesn't care about plants in the baggage anyways.

And although the laws and regulations are usually seen as overkill and not an issue, its always a good idea to carefully inspect the plants yourself before bring them back. Trust me, you do not want to be bringing Bunchy Top Virus infected aphids back with you to introduce to all of your other banana plants.

Why can't AE AE be cloned by AgriStarts, and sold by the thousands?

Why can't AE AE be cloned by AgriStarts, and sold by the thousands?

Because when they tried, they all came out green.

The issue is that AeAe's are somatic chimeras, not genetic. They are classified as periclinal chimeras. The challenge lies in the cellular structure of the cells causing the unique variegation. Due to their arrangement, tissue culturing of this banana has proven to be incapable of reproducing the variegation. Many have tried, only to have what appeared to be variegated leaves revert back to all green. Some become all white, that are incapable of self-sustaining photosynthesis.

If you use the search button and type in: periclinal
You should find these threads for a more detailed analysis of the challenges. I believe BigDog had a very complete post with comments from Gabe, and others.

Whomever unlocks the secret of being able to TC the AeAe and remain phenotypic, will be sitting on a gold mine!

As for bringing plants back from Hawaii, you take plants out I have done it. Inspection is required, and you would be advised to check with your local extension office before trying it. Each region of the U.S. is different. I can ship just about anything into my region, we really don't have strict agriculture requirements. But I shipped bananas to Arizona last year and they have their own requirements. I also shipped Brugmansia in to Sonoma, California and there are different requirements depending on the time of the year. It just happened to be late summer/early fall and during this time of the year they require a bettle certificate. So you can't just move plants from state to state. I received a call from the USDA in California on a Saturday inquiring if I had that beetle certificate so they could forward the shipment on. I found out that in that region the post office works hand in hand with the USDA, but I'm sure you can understand why. They can also enforce stiff fines if they so choose, but I have never heard of any being issued. I have received a letter of interception from a package coming to be from Thailand. It was taken in San Francisco and destroyed. So be careful not to "waste" perfectly good plants and get in trouble. Call the USDA and find out their requirements.

Because when they tried, they all came out green.

That's mostly true, but they were slightly successful. After 4 years of culturing they got 7 stable variegated plants. I have also heard other stories of success, but with interesting results. So far form what I have gathered is that it's possible, but actually easier and cheaper to grow the pups out in this case. It's possible that a technique could be discovered to overcome the issues too, but its hard to experiment without much material.
