I was over at PDN this weekend I picked up a Daj Giant and Alocasia Mojito
PDN -- Colocasia esculenta 'Mojito' PPAF (http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/Detail/08545.html)
Tony mentioned that there are going to be many new types of Alocasia and Calocasia with lots of variagation.:woohoonaner:

This is an awesome plant! I have been intending to order one of these for several weeks now but haven't gotten around to it.

I bought the very same combination when I was there the weekend before! I had to perform a complex series of justifications in order to spend that much on an elephant ear. But....it is really pretty.

Joe,

Wow you were just 15 minutes from my house, next time let me know in advance so we could meet. I didn't do a complex series of justifications, I just lied to my wife about the price :lurk:

Ok, guys, what the website says, it's a Colocasia esculenta var but I picked up a similar Caladium bicolor which was wild collected some 5 years ago for 60 cents which looked similar. I have only 1 lousy pix of it here. It is extremely variable on every leaf. In this pix, you don't see much dark red blotches. Sometimes I get leaves with heavy dark red blotching (just like the Mojito) with a lime green background with patches of mid green. No two leaves are the same. Size wise it is of course smaller than a colocasia but leaf get to 14" in length. Now I have put it at my nursery and it has become quite a clump. Mark, U want? :ha:

I thought I share a pix with y'all even if I didn't get it at its best lookin' self. If you look closely, you can see some red flecks on it.

Very beautiful! I've been considering getting some colocasia for a while now. Maybe once the greenhouse in my area is open again.

Hi Chris, I can check it out soon cos have some other stuffs some of the other guys want. I just uploaded some pix of a couple of caladiums. I am still actively and crazily collecting them. The pix below is another mutation I picked up some years ago. I found it as an all Green small plant which I thought had some potential and it didn't prove me wrong. It's an Alocasia macrohiza which I call Picasso cos as the leaves get big in full sun, it breaks up into splintered segments over a strong Yellow colored base. It looks like an oil painting to me. The hotter the sun, the better the colors. The leaves get big to 3+ft, in fact it got too big for my house and now it's in the ground at my nursery.
Araceae is fun here cos if you got a keen eye, you can spot mutations at the nurseries which the people are unaware.

My Picasso!

First thing Mark, they are gonna run out of names for all the mutations they find here. I have given up trying to ID any of the new Alocasia sp from Borneo. There are way too many new ones found every now and then. There's an enterprising guy here who does limited TC on the new stuff and they all sell cheap like not more than $4 a plant. Seriously, there's at least 1 new form/species every month out. I just saw 2 new forms of different Bornean sp today but didn't pick them up cos it was raining tigers and bears. The Thais come down and whack lock, stock and barrel cos there's a big following there. One of the prettiest I have seen is a hybrid of the A sanderiana x A micholitziana. Leaf shape and size of the A-s but totally velvety leaf surface of the A-m and to tempt you, it's cool loving!

Secondly, to me the best place in the world for plants ain't M'sia, it's Bangkok and it's my plan to retire there! :ha::ha::ha:

Tog,
Bangkok sounds good I may just join ya :ha:
I know what you mean about the different species being found all the time. The few that we can get over here are sometimes ones that no one knows the names of. I looked on the link in the first thread and see they have now found a more rounded leaf version of Fallax. We can grow that one here in the uk and with a mulch it will return next spring ( the true Fallax )

I think you are always going to find the odd mutant in the TCing trade like the Mojito and long may it continue. Its just a shame we cant get the buggers over here:ha:

Raining Tigers and Bears eh:ha:we say Cats and Dogs over here or P*ssing down:ha:

Hi Chris, sorry can't help on this one. I first got this plant 12 yrs ago which then it was known as Xenophyta lauterbachiana. Due to negligence and too big a collection, it died with me unaware. Sheesh...

Ok, here's something interesting to brighten your day. I found this mutation of the Variegated Alocasia macrohiza sometime ago. If you look closely, the background color is a creamy white and the demarcation fuzzy when compared to the normal form (on the right) which has a clean white background and a definite demarcation of the two colors. Let's see what it becomes as it grows.

Pix Update

Hey guys, here's the latest pix of the wild collected Caladium bicolor taken on 22.03.09. It shows more red flecks and a more intense color now. Probably due to the jungle like conditions at my nursery. It has been there for 6 months now.
Cheers!:ha:

Tog- It now is even more stunning! This one has to enter the trade; I'd give my 2nd son for it. (PS- only have 1 :-)
