Hello. I am new to the site but not to greengrowing. I live in NC and spend alot of time in my home greenhouse. I must confess I do not have an strong interest in growing bananas...hope that is prerequsite for the membership. I enjoy tropicals, orchids and am interested in learning how to bonsai. Look forward to sharing, exchanging and growing with you in the future.

Welcome aboard! Bananas can be something that grow on you with time - there's no prerequisite other than a fascination with plants!

May I suggest you start with one hardy banana plant: Musa velutina. I think it may get you hooked on bananas!

Quite Lovely. I must admit this is not what my mind sees when I think of babana plants. I did try once and thought it would fare well outside if well covered but it did not make it. I have another in the ground now but will see what the spring brings. Must they winter inside in NC? Thanks for your response.

Musa velutina is cold hardy in zone 7 with several inches of mulch during the winter. The stems will die back, but they will start growing again in the spring. Musa basjoo and musa velutina don't require to be indoors during the winter. I hope this helps.
Welcome Greengirl, sounds like you have lots of cool stuff growing. Stick around and I bet you'll try a couple of bananas before long.

Welcome to the site! I hope you enjoy it here! The community is most kind and helpful and there is plenty of great information on the wiki pages (http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Main_Page)!
I hope you enjoy it here. Trust me, banana cultivation is an addiction.....once you have some and grow them to a large size, you'll be stuck on that tropical look. Something about banana cultivation is extremely satisfying! They grow really fast if cared for well and are great plants. If you have enough light indoors, I'd strongly suggest indoor cultivation. That way you don't have to worry about winter issues.
