View Full Version : Awesome Producer- Ty Ty Gold
Hello, I have just returned from a botanical garden in San Diego, where I saw something labeled as "Ty Ty Gold". It was about 5-6 feet of stem, and wow! Insanely productive! Many many stems had large bunches hanging, in an overcrowded mat, in an undesirable shady location. I know they rarely fertilize either, so this thing is a keeper.
None of the fruit is mature, but the plant itself looks kind of cavendishy (that's a compliment- nice looking, very green, stout). Ty ty's very strange website has no info on it. Anyone know what's up with this? If it's a nice tasting fruit I might just boldly walk in with a shovel and dig up a corm and walk out with it.
Ok!

Did you take any photos? If so, please post. If not, please go back and take some! :)
Chong posted a photo of his Ty Ty Gold http://www.bananas.org/f2/my-project-3332-8.html#post43401
Jon doesn't have much listed at ENCANTO FARMS (http://webebananas.com/bvar-T-Z.html).
JD Anderson has it listed for sale for $15. Better than risking arrest by going in with your shovel! ;)

Yes, JD Anderson Nursery has Ty Ty Gold. They do have a $200 minimum for mail order though. If you are near the Fallbrook, CA area, they may sell you retail for local pick up.
Here's my Ty Ty Gold in May last year:

It is not very cold hardy. Probably, a Zone 9 type.

Just a word of warning (several words, actually): JD Anderson has a Fallbrook address but they are in a remote location in the hills. I went there with a friend of mine from Puerto Rico in December 2007 and the roads reminded him of his own mountain country. To make matters worse, I originally planned to go their on Saturday but then decided to drive out on Friday because of the way my schedule was running but I had forgotten that they are only open on weekends. So I went back a second time the following day. It's actually a faster drive there from Temecula.
Additionally, I don't know that they have these bananas at their nursery. I picked up two Ae Ae there inside of their greenhouse but didn't really see many other bananas. They mostly had plams, etc., but that might be a seasonal thing.
Chong, can I get a pup from you when you've got one?
Thanks,
Harvey

Is the weather there similar to Santa Barbara, temperature-wise?

So, you're the reason why the Ae-Ae pups that I was waiting for to come of size, were no longer available Spring of last year. I spoke to Dan in late Summer, or early Fall, of '07 and he told me to call him back in the next spring. When I did, he told me that they were no longer available.
Chong, can I get a pup from you when you've got one?

If it pups well, I can send you one.

It's quite a bit colder, I believe, as it is inland and in the mountains. They had some significant freeze damage from January 2007.

Not because of me! I sent off my check in the summer of 2007 with the promise to come pick them up later. They had 4-5 feet of pseudostem each so they had size to them for quite some time prior to when I bought them. Maybe you called them right after me.
If it pups well, I can send you one.
Thanks, I hope to have something to exchange by then.

Ummm, me too, please. I will gladly trade for one. Even a small one. The "TC machine" is locked and loaded.

I go to JD Andersens quite regularly -- or I should say past the place because I enjoy the drive on Daily Road. Sometimes I stop in to say hi. I'm not sure what nasty roads Harvey is referring to because Daily Road and the branch road are just normal country roads for me. I've had no problem with my two-wheel drive Ford Focus.
The nursery business is mainly palms. JD Andersen has a home in the Hawaiian islands somewhere where he raises interesting palms and other near-tropicals. He then ships them to his home in De Luz where his son lives full time. There are bananas and several other nursery plants assembled outside the hanger-style greenhouse. On the grounds are also some large specimens of varies fruiting trees and two small orchards.
The climate there is borderline zones 9/10. They are on a small knoll on the side of the Santa Margarita drainage basin. The drainage system is aligned southwest. Since they are on a hill, cold air drains away in the winter. The elevation is 1020 feet. San Clemente is almost directly west of there but obscured by a large ridge (you'd call it a mountain on the east coast) which is part of the massive Camp Pendleton Marine base. Consequently, there is no access from the west unless you want to dodge tanks and live munitions. For more details, check this location: 33 deg 26' 08.83" N 117 deg 17' 36.76" W.
So yes, I'd be happy to stop in there next week and purchase any interesting musas they might have. I'll let you know what I find.

Hey, Richard, sorry if you misunderstood my comments. I didn't say anything about the road being "nasty". It was a fun drive but even after we got to Fallbrook we had a long drive to get there still. It was a fun drive, though, with some nice views.
Dan told me that his parents do live in San Clemente part of the time and that the Ae Ae are grown in his parent's yard. Their place in Hawaii is near Pahoa on the Big Island. I know another nursery owner in the area and I briefly considered checking out a property there for myself but a friend of mine (former co-worker) over there tells me that drug gangs have got pretty bad there (they drug the body of a victim to make a point to the members of the community to make sure they understood who was in charge). Rats, trouble in paradise.
Dan told me they got down to something like 16F in January 2007 so I thought they would be colder than zone 9/10, but that was an especially harsh Arctic blast.
Back on the subject of Ty Ty Gold: Richard, if you wouldn't mind picking one up for me and shipping it to me, that would be greatly appreciated. I'd happily pay you a service fee as long as it's reasonable. ;)
Thanks,
Harvey

TyTy Has flowered once for me, in 5 years, and produced a total of one banana (not bunch, one banana). It has been slow grower and very weak at my plantation.
I think I will just go dig that one up next time I am down there. Just to be sure it is the same and all. I cannot imagine it could be the same one Pitangadiego has. The Andersen site says 8', this one is at least 2 shorter than that. And honestly, the overcrowding is such, that even if I took 5 pups i would be doing them a favor.
Jeez Ty Ty has a weird and creepy website!

Also, they only feed plants in the large greenhouse and shade house. The outdoor 'naners go without fertilizer.

According to Richard, it would appear that our subject nanners (and others) are left to fend for themselves. Maybe you can ask the curator if you can help them thin out their mats. And if you get some, may I have one or two? I'd be happy to pay for them and shipping.

I don't know about the guys, but some of the girls are sure nice! Someone here commented that some of the girl photos look like they came out of magazines from the 50's.

Ty Ty Nursery does not sell "Ty Ty Gold". They sell "Texas Star". Ty Ty Gold is a Cavendish type, while Texas Star is an Orinoco-Bluggoe type. (Apologies to Harvey for that reference).

Here's a picture of the 5 Ty Ty Golds I rescued last month from JD Andersen's. After they've had a chance to recuperate, four of them are going to Chironex, harveyc, hatfam, and chong; with the remaining one going into my garden.

Nice big plants! If it makes sense (you can judge better from there), you can ship mine any time and even whack off the top if that helps keep shipping down. I've been doing that to some of my in-ground bananas lately anyways (when taking breaks from working on taxes!) :P

I don't know, seems like there's many Orinoco variants floating around. :D
Isn't just Ty Ty Gold an ordinary Orinoco?

Did you guys happen to get a look at the one JD anderson is selling as Musa 'Rust'. Sounds like an interesting ornamental, but the $200 minimum has kept me away.

I did not look at it specifically. I can tell you that specimen ornamentals are their main business and they are all well cared for.
