THIS CONTEST IS OVER! This Pisang Klotek bunch ended up having 248 fingers!! Congrats Patty!
This the hand and finger count. It was an odd one going back and forth on size, maybe due to the weather changing from warm to cold several times as they developed? First hand (top hand) to bottom hand in that order: 20, 21, 18. 20, 15, 16, 17. 15. 14. 14, 16, 17, 16, 16, 13

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=16022&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=16022)

Here we go again! Win one free pup or rihzome of your choice from the following list.

Pisang Klotek
Hawaiian Apple
Jamaican Red
Dwarf Cavendish
Unknown possible Manzano
Misi Luki
Raja Puri
Stuttgart Canna Rihzome

Rules for this contest:
You must be a registered Bananas.org member as of 2-21-09 and live in the continental USA to enter.

One guess per member.

The closest guess without going over the actual number of fingers wins.

No guesses will be accepted after the deadline which is Sunday, March 8th at 12:00 pm PST.

Winner must pay in advance for USPS Priority shipping.

The plant will most likely be cut short to make the shipping easier. All roots will be removed, and all soil will be thoroughly washed off before shipping.

The contest: guess the total number of fingers/fruits on this Pisang Klotek bunch. No one from the board has seen the bunch yet, except me of course. This picture is from early Jan and the bunch has grown considerably since then. I think I'll be able to count the fingers about 30 or so days from now depending on the weather.

Good luck!

I don't know about that logic being this is the third time around with the PK. I'm sure some people will be looking back at previous final counts and seeing a pattern if ya know what I mean. ;) ;)

I think you would be wise to do some minor research and get a good number while you can! My Photo Gallery has a Pisang Klotek Folder to check out too.

Dan, your "this time of year" statement is a bit generic. Patty is in Wisconsin and slightly different than Port St. Lucie. Patty's signature includes includes her Wunderground weather info and at 6:11pm it's showing a warm 33*F!!! Are you in a banana belt, Patty??? ;)

Even here in zone 9 I had a light frost this morning and was 35 at 7am.

Thanks gang & thanks again Mitchel. And I thought my # was too high! Am hoping you all can help me decide what to pick. I already have a Raja Puri (8 inches TC) and I'd like something that tastes good. I'm thinking of Misi Luki maybe.
I don't know much about them. What would y'all pick??? And why?

harveyc
03-09-2009, 10:57 PM
Patty, maybe you could work out a deal with the folks that run those domes (unless you plan on building your own - LOL) and get a Hawaiian Apple Banana (a big "bad boy", as Mitchel calls them) and see if they'd work out a deal for you to come visit it for free. Just a thought.

Otherwise, you probably do want to go with something shorter and hardier like Misi Luki since you already have Raja Puri. I'd pick the Psiang Klotex, personally (my pup from Mitchel died due to either under or over-watering when I had it in my shop last winter crowded with about 20 others), but I've got a tall greenhouse and milder winters than you.

Good luck with whatever you chose!

Patty in Wisc
03-09-2009, 11:21 PM
The Domes might charge me rent for taking in a nana LOL.
The name "Hawaiian Apple" sounds good. How do they taste? big "bad boys" don't scare me :)
My sunroom has 12 1/2 ft ceiling so I'm not worried there.
Which ones fruit fastest?
Hey, I could have a apple banana and a banana apple tree growing next to each other LOL.

harveyc
03-09-2009, 11:30 PM
Patty, my greenhouse is 16' tall in the center and still not nearly tall enough. You've got to leave room for leaves!

Patty in Wisc
03-09-2009, 11:45 PM
Thanks Harvey
Is the PK real tall? I think I might pick that. But then what about Misi Luki? Is that good tasting?
(You should see me in a restaurant trying to pick something off the menu LOL)

harveyc
03-09-2009, 11:52 PM
The wiki shows the PK to be shorter than Misi Luki but you better wait for Mitchel to answer more precisely. Both are considered to be great tasting, though I don't remember if I've tasted either (yet).

momoese
03-10-2009, 12:12 AM
As I said in the PM, I think you could grow the PK in your greenhouse, at least for the first year or 2 anyway. The Apples are way to tall! As for flavor the PK has been the best, but not the most consistent. The Apples have always been awesome even with frost damage.

I'm still waiting for my first Misi Luki flower, can hardly wait! Raja Puri is almost ready to ripen.....look out Taylor!

Patty in Wisc
03-10-2009, 12:33 AM
Mitchel, you've been very generous with this & other "contests", but I'm wondering if I send a couple bucks more, could I sample a raja puri & a PK nana? I could ripen them here. I never had anything but the chiquita in stores.

Mike has a 18-19ft ceiling in his L room. My IC is in there now.
Or if anything, I could dig up & force them to sleep for winter.

Let me make sure I understand you, you would like to sample the fruit before deciding on a pup? If that's the case you know I have Raja Puri that's getting close, but the PK is at least 5 month's from picking green to bag ripen. If you want to wait that long to sample both fruits that's ok with me, I just thought you might want to get started growing something while you have some good weather.

Mitchel, I meant if you could send a nana of each along with the pup. If they are still green I could let them ripen(?) You mentioned that those 2 are ripening. 'twas just a thought:) Not to taste them to decide on a pup LOL

You & Harvey mentioned that my ceiling won't be high enough for winter growing...
"Mike has a 18-19ft ceiling in his L room. My IC is in there now.

Winter '07 - '08 I did Frank's method of putting the IC to sleep.

I'm narrowing down to either Misi Luki or Pisang Klotek. I'll let you decide Mitchel since PK might be too big unless you cut it.

Ok, let's think about this. The PK that's blooming right now has 13 feet of PS and the top leaves are about 23 feet tall.

My Misi Luki that I got from Pitangadiego has yet to bloom and is currently at 9 feet of PS and 15 feet to the top leaf. Pitangadiego says 10-12 feet of PS for him so if that's true then the leaves will top out at 18-22 feet on this plant.

Basically it's the same difference. Another thing to consider is that my first PK plant did not grow this tall. It seems that as the matt becomes more established they have grown taller. I have to wonder how tall the Misi Luki will get after a few more years of growth?

I'll leave you to ponder that info.

About the fruits, I went and looked at the Raja Puri today and they still need some plumping, but I'd be happy to send you some when they are ready though. The PK fruits won't be ready to pick green for another 4-5 months.

Ok the ball is yours again! Lmk

Ok the ball is yours again! Lmk

I'll take Pisang K...nope - too big maybe.
How about that "bad boy" Hawaiian Apple! YEAH - bigger the better.
Nah, Dwarf Cavendish cuz it's small enough to fit inside in winter.
Oooh, Jamaican Red sounds interesting! I'll take that.
Uh oh, that Stuttgart Canna. Is that Canna as in 'Lily'? Cool!
OK OK, it's gotta be Misi Luki and that's my final answer :simpatica:2791:
I don't think it will get as big since it will grow in a pot 6-7 months a year. Container growing always makes them smaller. I'll post pics as it's growing :)

Sorry Nana girl. Think how bad I'd feel if someone took #201!! When I picked 200 I thought it was way too high.

Misi Luki it is! I might be able to get one dug out this weekend, if not then for sure the following weekend. It has a few real nice sword pups on it. Hows the weather looking for shipping?

This week is cold-Wed Thurs high in 20's. Next Mon & Tues will be in 40's but I can't see Wed or Thurs yet.
7-Day Forecast for Latitude 43.09°N and Longitude 87.94°W (Elev. 686 ft) (http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=43.08092540794885&lon=-87.9620361328125&site=mkx&smap=1&marine=0&unit=0&lg=en)
This has been pretty accurate. Type in your city, state or zipcode for your local 7 day forecast.
If Wed & Thurs are decent, you could ship on Monday.

I've had the plant for 3 months now, & it is just starting to grow in the last 7 days or so!!!!! We've had a very cold spring & it just didn't want to wake up. I was worried. The top stayed the same but it was splitting at the base. So, after Harvey posted that his plant might be choking - and he cut the top, I figured that's what's happening, so I cut just over 1 inch off the top to let a new leaf out about 3 weeks ago. Here's a pic taken today. This all happened in about 7 days because of heat (FINALLY), rain & lightening storms.

Mitchel posted a pic here of how it looked when he sent it & that's how it stayed for about 3 months!
Thanks again Mitchel :)

It is twice as high - or more, as when I got it.
Mitchel, where did you post the pic of the pup just before you sent it? I just went thru every page here & can't find it. It was a beaut with a massive rootball.

It'll burst out now Patty. Everything here started popping too the past week. Interesting to see what it looks like a month from now.

It's bursting Bob. Pic taken exactly 5 weeks after last one. The lower leaf on right is the one just coming up in last pic. It has it's 6th leaf coming up since. Pstem is 26 inches.

Here ya go Patty. It's looking really nice!

BTW, the Pisang Klotek bunch from this contest is the one I'm eating right now and the one that will be on the the cover of B-Q #3. Tony aka Sunfish will be enjoying some as soon as his box arrives. Hopefully he'll chime in on the flavor. I've narrowed it down to a cross between Pineapple and Jolly Rancher Watermelon candy. I've never had another banana that tasted like these!

Thanks Mitchel. Just think how big it'd be if we had a better summer!
"cross between Pineapple and Jolly Rancher Watermelon candy"?? Oh my, I'm so envious!
I saw that pic you posted...good choice (by Lorax) to have it on the next cover.
