hi. im Kelli in Antioch, TN. I got real excited when JoeReal posted the story about BigDog on the citrus forum.

I lived in california last year for school, and loved the smell of citrus. Im also a crazy hippie dietitian and want to some day grow most of my food. Its a slow process, but its exciting.

Ive got a dwarf cavendish and a dwarf orinoco on order. Ive got several other types of fruit growing now too.

Hi Kelli! I used to live between Antioch and Brentwood. We called it "Brentioch." I'm in Knoxville now. This is what my yard looked like at the end of last summer:



I'm working still at getting my new yard to look similarly...more space to work with here (translation: way too much grass!). I have three blooms on my Tall Orinocos so far this year. Probably all I'll get for fruit production, although I hope that I'm pleasantly surprised.

My advice: Ditch the dwarf cavendish and stick with orinocos. There are a few others that will do ok stored dormant under the house, but I still haven't found one banana plant that does as well as orinoco. Dwarf Cavendish (or "DC") takes too long to ripen a bunch in our climate, and doesn't store that great under the house (or in the garage).

Hey, if you're into palms as well as citrus, you should attend the Southeastern Palm Society meeting this Saturday in Chattanooga. A guy in Athens (where the 2nd half of the meeting is) grows citrumelo (a cold-hardy, grapefruit-like citrus), palms, and bananas (amongst other things). Check this link for meeting news.

I appreciate the advice on which are good trees- I got a lil bit of "ebay-fever" and bought the cavendish on a whim while i was purchasing some other plants I wanted. I dont know if I have the guts to crawl under the house, we have tons of spiders and ticks (neighbors have outside dogs that are unkempt)- I was hoping to just keep it in the window over winter-

Have you overwintered smaller naners in the house?

This weekend im going to visit my dad in cincinnati! but if there is anything else fun going on in the area Id love to come out and learn!

Kelly, That plant has been spoiled in the Green house and i have another lime tree with fruit ..

i Have been using Banana Leaves in my mulch and compost for a couple of yrs now its awesome .

i Guess im kinda hippiesh too if eating healthy means that .
Last week i had a Mcdonalds sandwitch and well my tummy hurt for a couple of hrs ..
