Hello!!!! My name is Margaret, aka Marinemom, I live in the foothills of beautiful North Carolina, with my husband, 2 of my 3 sons, 2 dogs and one cat... I am a stay at home mom who homeschools the 2 younger boys, oldest one is a Corporal with the Marine Corp., stationed in Japan...
I am attempting to grow banana trees and so far they haven't grown very much... I bought two off of eBay last spring from a wonderful lady in SC. I guess maybe I didn't do things correctly, because they haven't really gotten as big as I thought they would. I planted both of them outside in the ground after the danger of frost last year~ but dug one up and put in a pot just in case one died... The one I left was planted outside by the pool in full sun from sun up to sun down and didn't really grow much at all. I would take gallon jugs out each day with water and some miracle grow (jugs have small holes poked to slowly let water out) and that is about all the fertilizer I gave it. Is that enough or do I need some major heavy duty fertilizer?
I did not overwinter the one planted outside, but chose to dig and replant inside in a pot. So far so good with it as well as the other potted one. When do I need to start fertilizing this year? In the pot or wait until I get them both in the ground? Thanks for reading this longer than normal introduction!!!! Good day to all! Oh and these banana's are the Basjoo kind, I think....

Welcome Marinemom, my first though would be that your plants probably needed more water than you'd been supplying. I'd plant them out after all danger of frost and if you're able let a hose trickle on them a while rather than hauling jugs. As far as fertilizer , bananas are heavy feeders. Since basjoo aren't an edible variety go heavy on nitrogen(first of the 3 numbers on fertilizers). You may want to check out some of the old posts regarding this and be sure to check out some of "Richards" posts, he's kind of our resident expert concerning these things. Good luck.
