Some months ago, I had a problem with my printer. I posted here and asked if anyone could help, and someone (Turtile) got me going again, so I thought I 'd throw this problem up.
I had been using Norton for anti virus, for several years because, with rebates, I got it free. This year I was unable to do that. A couple of years ago, we switched our ISP to Verizon, and got FIOS, a fiberoptic connection for phone, internet, and TV.
Verizon was putting little pop-ups on my computer screen, telling me to install Verizon Security Suite. Since my Norton was expiring, I decided to do that.
Then the trouble started. I got a message, from Verizon, that there was a conflict between Verizon Security, and Norton, and I should remove the Norton. I did that.
I tried various Help pages and suggestions, but some problems persist.
1. I couldn't get my e-mail. (I use Outlook Express) It would go to, "Connecting", and stay there until it timed out. One suggestion was to turn machine off, for 15 seconds, and turn it back on. That worked, once. I got my e-mails, but the next time I tried, it was back where it was. I had to turn the machine off and on before each time, I tried to retrieve e-mail.
2.When I try to get on the internet (using Internet Explorer) the Microsoft page comes up first. Then I select a site I want to see, from, "My Favorites", or type in an address. The selected site comes up on the screen, and the little, "Back" arrow, at top left turns from black to green. When I'm finished looking, I click on that arrow, and it turns black again, and the Microsoft page comes back. I can then select another site to look at. Now, when I try to bring up the Microsoft page, I get a,"Page can not be displayed", and, "Can't find server" message. I have to click on, "Refresh" before it works. Also, when I select a site, the little arrow doesn't turn green, until I go to the second page. (For instance, now. I clicked on Bananas.org, and got the Home page. The arrow stayed black. The I clicked on Tiki Hut, got it, and the arrow turned green.) When I'm finished, I should be able to click on the Back arrow, until I get back to the Microsoft page, when it should turn black again. Now, I can only click back to the Home page. The only way I can get back to Microsoft, or view another site, without putting it on top of the current one, is to click, "Close", and start all over with the Refresh, etc.,etc. I'm also having to log in, each time, on each site.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You might try mozilla or chrome. I never use explorer. I've been liking chrome but it sure seems to take up a lot of cpu memory. You can download and use either free.

1. "I doubt that Norton is completely disabled if my experience on this forum counts for anything. In many many cases, the users had to uninstall from Windows Add/Remove and then had to get the uninstall utility from the Symantec support website for the version they had and run it so it was removed properly."

Here is the Symantec Norton removal site:
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool (http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039)

If you wanna try Chrome you can get it here:
Google Chrome - Download a new browser (http://www.google.com/chrome)

You can get Mozilla Firefox here:

I'm running Firefox with Verizon's Security Suite and Outlook (not Express) and XP. I have occasionally run into a similar problem where the e-mail download from Verizon to Outlook hangs and then downloads duplicate copies and then times out. The only workaround I've found that always works is to see the last e-mail downloaded in Outlook, go on to Verizon Web mail and delete the next e-mail. When I then have Outlook go back to download, it works fine. Its a "hydraulic" fix, like removing the blockage in the piping. :ha:

Uninstalling Norton Anitvirus doesn't get rid of the program completely. You may be able to remove it by using the removal tool that Michael posted above. If that doesn't work, you'll have to remove it from the registry.

For XP -> use Start -> run -> type msconfig (remover under services)
You should be able to use Defender to remove it in Vista

Well this was the directions I first found but I thought the removal tool would be much easier. I've modified my registry this way but if your not sure what your doing you really need to print it out and follow every step exactly. I can't verify the steps listed only what I found posted.

This was from:

How can I fully remove Norton Antivirus from my system? :: Free Tech Support from Ask Dave Taylor! (http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can_i_fully_remove_norton_antivirus_from_my_system.html)

Generally, you remove applications by using the Windows utility for the task, but Norton Antivirus tends to get in a bit deeper into the system, so it's tricker to remove it completely. Here's how you can do that:

1. Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs.
2. Scroll down to your Norton program
3. Click Change --> Remove All.
You will be asked to restart your PC. Do so.
4. Now go to Start --> My Computer --> Program Files. Right click on each Symantec folder and select Delete.
5. While you are in Program Files go to the Common Files folder at or near the top of the Program Files window. Delete every Symantec folder there. And, again, restart your PC.
6. Go to Start --> Search --> All Files and Folders --> More Advanced Options. Check each option except for "Case sensitive"
Now type in Norton and delete each Norton folder from the search results (Again, right click, choose "Delete"). One more time, restart your PC.
7. Repeat step 5 except type Symantec in the "Search" box.

The next step is trickier: go into the Registry.

1. First thing to do is Back up the Registry. I'll be saying more about the Registry later. But suffice it to say that the presence of uninstalled security software in the Registry can conflict with newly installed security software and cause system freezes. So can folders of "uninstalled" programs for that matter.
2. Once again, go to Start, then click on "Run". Type in "regedit"
3. Go to the top of the Regedit window. Click (+) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Go down the thread until you see Software. Click on Software and scroll down the thread until you see Symantec. Right click on Symantec and choose "Delete".
4. From there go down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and repeat step 3. Restart your PC.
5. Click (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, now: Click (+) next to Software, Click (+) next to Microsoft, Click (+) next to Windows and Click (+) next to CurrentVersion.
6. Select the Run folder. Right-click and delete each Symantec entry you see (if present). Restart your PC.

That should completely eradicate Norton Antivirus from your system!

Throw your PC off the roof and get a Mac. That will solve many of your problems instantly!
