I hear how hard and easy these seeds are to grow?I want to order seeds soon but how will the cold effect the seeds in the mail,it is around -10 to-15 celsius at night right now.Should I wait till spring has sprung.Would this be the same for canna seeds also???Thanks for the feedback!!

Will,
I recommend that you PM member Steve L. He is the man when it comes to growing Heliconia. I can't say if he's tried any from seed but he can certainly advise you on most anything else about growing Heliconias. Good luck!

Will, give me a shout. Having killed 50 or so heliconia over the course of the last 10 years, I can certainly tell you what not to do.

Now, Steve, surely you haven't killed that many!

Probably so. I've killed Sexy Pink 6 times and my latest one is barely hanging on. It's a real picky one.

My variegated psittacorum and my scheidiana are doing great in the house but I am waging war big time with spider mites on my regular psittacorum and my rostrata. I'm afraid that if I can get the rostra back outside soon that there won't be much left of it by spring.

Mites love Rostrata leaves. They won't kill it entirely but will sure damage last years growth. I'd bring it outside and hose it down. I don't think the cooler temps we're getting this week will hurt it if you leave it in your garage. After this week, it looks a lot better as far as cold temps are concerned.
