A Gran Nain and an Orinoco banana. Our greenhouse roof got turn up, and the following night it froze well enough to kill the leaves off all our bananas, but thankfully all but the Orinoco and Gran Nain survived at the rootball and even lower P-Stem. They're now indoors in pots and re-growing. The Gran Nain I kinda expected to die off entirely, but the Orinoco's issue was being too small.

I killed off my 8' ice cream, to test some transplanting methods. These plants a very hardy. This plant suffered from a spider mite infestation when it was younger. See post: " Fungus in my ice cream".

2 Gran Nains or possibly Williams. Can barely stand eating them at this point and I'm ripping out all cavendish types except for my Double Mahois because I want to see the multiple bunches eventually. Hoping someone will take these huge plants off my hands locally.

Sad to say, but the Iholena that was given to me looks dead. I received it in bad shape and tried my best, but it could not take. Bummers. Got to find another Hawaiian out there. So hard to find someone who has them that is willing to kokua. A'ohe aloha i kiea manawa.:bunchonanas:

Good luck with that :08:
I waited and waited, and finally when the top ones began turning yellow, I waited a little more until one had split its skin - THEN I harvested it since the birds would have had it if I hadn't.
Do you know of any other types that 'never taste very good in Hawaii'? :lurk:
Aloha Yug. Where did you get your Manzano from? Just curious

I'll keep my fingers crossed. Mine probably has a year to go, and given that several plants haven't been what I bought them as, it's worth the wait for me to try.
I think there are a few different types of Manzano's in Hawaii. It may depend on which one you have. The UH site states that Manzano is the favorite of the local Filipinos, so it has to be good. Filipinos are very picky with their bananas.

Mine was sold as Silk Fig, but I don't think that really tells much.
This guy in the Big Island thinks that is the best tasting variety.
Silk Fig (Dessert): One of the best-tasting dessert bananas available in Hawaii. Plants are 7-12 ft. high with medium-size bunches. Fruits are smallish and mostly round, and the skin is thin and edible. They have a wonderful taste and consistency. If you're only going to plant one banana, this is an excellent choice. After Apple and Williams, probably the most-planted commercial banana on small farms.

Yep, that's who I got it from. Has been one of my slowest plants too, though didn't help that I accidentally broke the original 3' tall plant at ground level. Still, only 2 pups after 3 years while the sucrier I got from him at the same time has given me fruit and about a dozen pups.

Strange. Mine was pretty vigorous with pups. I have a silk fig that is of the Figue Famille variety. I got in June as a TC. In July or August, I kind of gave it too much insecticidal soap so it almost died on me. But it has come back and has given me 6 keiki's. I completely desuckered it in November. The desuckering really slowed it down. No new keiki's yet. The main plant is about four feet. So is it's largest keiki.

well it got down to 25F and both are toast. American Beauty didn't like low's so I brought it in.. Only reason I left the yellow is they take so to develope fruit.

My perfect Grand Nain is no longer perfect :( .
I left it outside in its pot yesterday because the temperatures have been getting really high. I didn't realize today would be the opposite and on top of that really windy. I came home to my plant toppled over with all the leaves shredded up and bruised. It's hideous now lol. Not sure what to do. What I now know is that banana plants are really fragile & I would never be able to sleep with mine being outside! Any suggestions?

What did the temp drop to? Bananas are the opposite of fragile. Sure they can look shredded. But they will continue to grow fine as long as too much leaf material wasn't torn away and the pstem wasn't bent and cracked open. If too many roots broke off the mama corm that's a different story. Try righting it and fill in the soil gaps. And stake it too.

Thanks. Today has been around 3 to 6 degrees celsius. It looks better now, now that I moved it inside. I'm sure it'll be okay, I just have mild OCD about it not looking perfect lol. All except the newest leaf are shredded up. I think maybe it's too early to be moving it outside. I want to move it out of the existing pot and officially plant it either in a planter or into the ground.

How big was that possum? I caught a real big one that got over half of my Glenn mangos. Eighteen inch long tail. In a Havahart type trap. That little Tomcat plasting thing would have only tweaked his nose and pizzed him off.

It was a juvenile. He got his foot trapped. When I tried to chase him down ( 3:00 AM-do not ask...) he lost the trap. However, he must have been hurt enough to not to return.

I didn't kill it. It was a contract hit.
Had 5 big pine trees removed from around the yard, to get more sunlight for plants.
Here is a picture of the remains of the second largest. At ground level the trunk diameter was over 30" (stump was just about in line with the front of farthest trunk piece to the left, where the ground is all torn up), the over head branch span was about 50' diameter (basically reaching out over my Namwa mat, FHIA 17 mat, Non-Ice Cream mat, grapefruit tree, some palm trees and my fence (for perspective, from the where the trunk was to the fence is about 9-10').
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n200/dangermouse2006/flowers%20and%20plants/Misc/pinetree-1_zpsaecf1d5c.jpg
Here is the Non-Ice Cream mat after I removed all the broken leaves after the pine was gone. It was about 7' away from the trunk. A few months ago I dug up and potted a pup from there, just in case the whole mat got busted. I will probably end up planting the potted one, and getting rid of that mat. The namwa mat is just at the left edge of the picture.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n200/dangermouse2006/flowers%20and%20plants/Misc/pinetree-2_zpsb382062e.jpg
Very impressive to watch the 4 man crew take those trees down with just chainsaws and ropes (and a bobcat for moving the trunk pieces).

Ok, I haven’t been on this forum for some time. I’m still shell shocked from what happened. But I figure its time to get up and start over. I got back from a two year deployment in Afghanistan in May to find that my favorite Bananas were all casualties of war. I left them with my Mom, she tried her best I know, but they didn’t make it.
My Favorite was the Variegated Namwa in the first several pictures. It had beautiful yellow variegation with a hint of cream white when grown in the shade and a brilliant lite green on green variegation when the leaves got older and it got more sun. The pictures are in order from pup to adulthood.

On a positive note, the Dwarf Red, Goldfinger, Dwarf Cavendish and siam ruby survived. I know I can eventually find another AeAe, but the other two seem to be impossible to find now. If only I had them long enough to get pups, I could have shared them and maybe have gotten one back.

I have to ask---- if your plants look that good this time of year why oh why are you cutting them down???? And what is that plant?
Just guessing but I think it's Elephant Ears/taro. The roots are edible. You can grow them up north but they are frost/freeze sensitive so you have to treat them like dahlias or glads and bring them in each fall. Here in FL they can be invasive.

A couple monster Raja Puri's, 3 D. Reds, thinned out the pups on Njalipoovan too.. D. Reds might be pretty but are a waste of time on my plain..

The Dwarf Reds are tough for me, too. That combination of being slow and sensitive to cold makes it hard to get good fruit from them in my climate. Either they fruit after most of the leaves have been damaged over winter, so they have little in the way of solar panels to produce carbohydrates to fill the fruit, or they fruit around now, and then the bunch hangs over winter, which doesn't work out well. But they are pretty plants.

I'm reasonably sure I probably killed a bunch of ants yesterday when I pulled up a ?zebrina? that was looking sickly or dead and found a gazillion
?"bigheaded"? ants living underneath it.
I'm not sure if the ants had a hand in the plant's demise, or it was already on the way out when the ants moved in-or both.
Hopes and dreams! Lol! I'm kidding!
well it wasn't a moose.......:moosenaner:

Killed off my struggling, 2nd attempt at rambutan to put in an Ele Ele.

I've found the same up here above you on the hill, longan and lychee are doing very well. The rambutan is dragging its feet. I'm inclined to think part of the problem is all the high winds we've had during the last year +. When I bought my first rambutan I was told that they did not like windy conditions. Between Iselle, the Kona wind and the other windy days, my poor rambutan has taken a beating. The only thing it has going for it is the fact that it puts out new growth at least 2X per year. They need to be protected from winds. I hope it will outgrow needing to be protected, otherwise it's doomed.

What have I been killing?
Ice Cream Bananas, by the dozens.
I transplanted a dozen pups from another location.
They like it there and are reproducing like weeds crowding each other and trying to spread into areas setup for other things to grow in. I have dug up all but 2 of the 12 original clumps and am digging up anything that pops up again.
It's like trying to clear invasives off the property, maybe even harder to do.

A friend down the road off the Red Road has a whole Rambutan farm, so they can definitely thrive here. He has the best rambutan I've had. My longan is 7 years old and has yet to flower, though it always looks happy. The Ele Ele I planted in its place turned out to be a Green Red that does very well!

After posting above, I have been looking at my rambutan again. It is really ratty looking. It is nearing another growth period. We'll see how it looks after it puts out some new leaves. But, Plant It Hawaii will be having their semi annual tree sale to the public in about a month or so. I think I'll go look to see if they have any rambutans available then. They seem to have the best quality grafted trees around the area.

Killed a couple more ice cream banana pups coming up where I dug the others out. They are persistent. I'll give them that.

Well sadly, one of the two plants from the basement that I planted was found yesterday laying on its side as if someone had shot it in the back. I thought it was going to survive as it had some purple and green color in the stem. I wonder if the corm has life in it. Should I dig it up and plant it in a pot and see if anything happens? The other plants is still standing straight up but I don't have much hope for that one either. Guess I didn't do a very good job of wintering them. Very sad.

Sadly, all for of my plants I'm afraid as well as several pups. I'm seriously bummed. I knew it was a gamble though. Now to locate more and focus on container growing.

I am in the process of killing a beautiful rough tree fern unfortunately. Doing everything I can to save her. She's hanging on by a frond. :(
