View Full Version : The fruit is turning yellow!!!! (Pics)
I am so excited! I looked out the window and saw a yellow banana!!! OMG! It happened. I'm so freaking excited I can't stand it. I'm coming up on 5 and 1/2 months and I just didn't think they were going to ripen. So here are the pictures (that is if I remember how to post them still?) AND now what do I do???!! hee hee Should I just let them ripen and pick them one by one or hand by hand. Or should I cut off that hand now and let it ripen inside. OR should I cut the whole thing down? This is my first fruit buch on my first banana tree. I'm so excited! :) I would have not made it this far if it wasn't for this forum. I was talked through this every step of the way. Thanks everyone!

Great pics Jen, Congrats! :bananas_b
Here are two more pictures. The sun is brighter now so I think these might be better pictures. It looks like it's the second hand not the first. Is that normal. In fact the first hand looks to be the greenest of all of them.

Very nice!!
I wish I knew the answer to you question also. My first thought is it let it ripen on the tree, but I see everyone else cutting the entire bunch down at once. What kind of Banana is it? I have been told some types you cut them all down some you just let them ripen on the plant.

You can cut down the entire bunch now and hang it to let them ripen. I can "see" the smile on your face! Enjoy!

So then as a rule of thumb, wait till one fruit turns yellow then cut the bunch?

Pretty much true for most varieties, although some prefer a longer hang time for ripening. Some of the red bananas need to hang until they are nearly black. Some are ripe when they are green, so it varies by type. But as a general rule, yes, when the first fruit yellows, you can cut the bunch and hang it somewhere protected to keep bugs, birds, etc away from them while they ripen. It may also help reduce the chances of splitting in certain varieties.

Jen - congratulations!! It is soooo exciting when the first finger turns yellow - always a thrill! Enjoy eating them and passing the fruit you can't eat to friends and family!
Thanks! I will cut it down and hang it. I'm not sure how or where but I will. Should I hand it inside my house? Or outside? Do I need to cut it pretty far up in case the stem starts dying before they ripen? Sorry I'm such a newbie to all this.
Oh and our best guess is it's a Mysore.

Yes, give yourself as long of a handle as you can. Hang it in your garage if you want or on the back porch, unless you get an unexpected cold snap. Hang is somewhere that the critters can't get to it.

Cut off a hand, and bring it indoors. It will ripen faster that way. Then cut another in a few days, etc. That wil spread out your harvest. Otherwise, you will have to eat a lot of bananas real fast.
THANKS!!! Here we go. I just cut the hand. :) Woo Hoo! I'm so excited!

That's what most home growers do. Keeping them on the plant runs the risk of splitting the skin on some of the fruits because it continues to take in nutrients. Watering or rain will exacerbate the risk. Better to cut the bunch down now.

Congrats Jen, I'm really happy for you!
Whatever you decide to do, you have a lot of bananas to eat and probably some to give away! Next thing they will want though is their very own plant, and soon enough you will be recruiting new members for Bananas.org, lol.
Enjoy! You did the best thing of all which is taking plenty of pics! Now it's time to dive into the recipe section of the site ;)

Congrats on the ripe fruit!! It doesn't happen with all varieties but some like my Pisang Klotek split easily, especially with rapid climate change EDIT: (I meant weather change as in cold to hot and back again, you know what I mean!) like we just experienced here in So Cal. About 95% of this bunch split.

That's for sure! I usually share with many people but they were so ugly and I didn't want to have to tell everyone to just remove the dry area where they split, so I only shared with a few people and ate a ton myself. For some reason the taste was different than the last bunch and they were extremely astringent and starchy until fully ripe. I'll have another PK bunch ready in 6 months and I'll be careful to get it down before splitting this time around!

Saw this late.......due to more snow what else. CONGRATS Jen! I can't wait till I post the same thing some day. Thanks for sharing the pics too.:woohoonaner::woohoonaner:
OMG a ty ty ad!!! Harvy! That is awful! Crap, I'm so deleting that picture.
Regardless of my cheezy picture, I tasted it today and it was...well...different. It was tart and kinda strawberry like. I don't know I will have to eat some more and figure it out. No more ripe ones yet but I think I will let the next one sit longer and see if it gets less tart. I'm now going to see if I can take my stupid picture off. Too late everyones already seen it but at least it won't live on forever. I wanted to have a picture holding the whole thing but I didn't cut it down I only cut one hand. Okay, it was cheezy. :) hee hee But I was so darn excited!!! I've calmed down and the excitement has worn off a little. :) All back to normal. Jen

You might want to wait and let it ripen a lot more. Kinda just before it starts to get brown specks. If you buy those green bananas from Costco, and you eat them before they are fully ripe, I bet you, what you had just now was 10 times better.

You guys are so funny! Harvey don't you feel bad for one second, I totally resembled a ty ty ad. :) I got a good laugh out of that post and it was all in fun. No worries!
Chong, your right about the bananas. My husband ate half and he was blown away. He was not expecting such a strong "taste". He loved them. It was better than those tasteless costco ones. They were good just so different. I will try letting the next one sit longer.
Jen :)

Can we do a poll?
All those in favor of returning the picture? Reply with a "Yes"
Opposed? reply with "I am out of touch with the common man and wish to vote conscientiously to reflect my negative viewpoint of the entire fun-loving world. So I oppose everything because it supports my gloomy disposition."
I vote Yes

Jen,
I never saw your pic but can only surmise that it must have been a good one. It's your choice whether or not to repost your pic and we all should respect it as such. If it makes you feel any better, I submit my own pic of me in a near delerious state upon receiving an 'Ae-Ae' from member Steve L. last spring. That's me on the right. My face almost froze in that position!
